I see this recommendation:

On the Wii, launch the Homebrew Channel and select CMDVDX34, then pick "Downgrade IOS35", wait for it to end and come back to the menu, then exit.
(If it says "Failed to add title, maybe you already ran this?", Download IOS35-64-v1040.wad

You might have to google that file. someone should probably confirm this will work

Do what the dude says in this guide http://www.timashley.me/?q=node/6&page=1

And then continue with the current guide.

I'm not 100% sure to tell you the truthf. I believe for Wads to showup in Homebrew you have to put them in the wad folder.

I don't believe you should delete the other files. However, like I said this is what I would do to fix it and I'm not 100% sure. So a little googling might give you piece of mind

No problem. I doubt you will kill your wii but it's always good to do some research before taking other steps. Someone might be able to confirm what I have told you hopefully

Absolutely amazing guide, and it worked wonderfully for me. I followed the initial guide, and then followed the guide to use the regular disc channel to play backups. Everything worked great for 7 out of 8 backups I played.

For an unknown reason, I decided to open up the SD card manager (the one used to load channels from your SD card) on the main menu with the backup hack files in the Wii's SD Reader. The Wii froze, and after restarting, inserting a backup disc yields a black-screen error "An error has occurred..."

I attempted re-installing the disc channel hack, to no effect. Any suggestions on what my next step should be?

Thanks in advance for the help. My Wii is an NTSC-U with serial starting with LU31

Hi. First of all thanks for the great guide. It's the best one I found. Worked perfectly first time round.

I'm just curious about 2 things.

1) The guide says:

Quote:
This section will downgrade and patch IOS35 so we can install a cIOS.
...

Go up and select "Downgrade IOS35" (skip patchmii and dvdx).

After it downgrades IOS35 go down to "EXIT" and it should exit to the Homebrew Channel.

Run WAD Manager.
...
Go to IOS35.WAD in the list and press A.
Select action: <install wad> press A.

So first IOS35 is downgraded and then it is installed again exactly afterwards. Could anyone please explain what exactly is the difference between the IOS35 which was downgraded and the IOS35.wad which is installed right after the downgrade?

2) I installed cIOS38_rev13a as per the instructions in the guide. It says:
Quote:
Select IOS35 for the IOS to use for Instillation.

Now, if I want to install cIOS38_rev13b or a newer version in the future, which IOS should I select for the installation: IOS35 or IOS249?

Thank you all for your help.

My Wii also froze when I opened the SD card manager from the system menu. My Wii is a PAL. Does everyone's Wii freeze when they open the SD card manager??

I tried using the Backup Launcher channel which was installed when I followed this guide to start a backup disc. I got a black screen and returned to the Backup Launcher menu after a few seconds.
I only have one backup disc at the moment which I created myself to try out the launcher. So I don't really know if the disc is burnt correctly.
I didn't think this issue was related to trying to open the SD card manager from the system menu. Is there a way to fix it please?

Do we perhaps need to install another cIOS for Backup Launcher 0.3 gamma to work (I have already installed cIOS38_rev13a)?

Thanks

In my attempt to fix the issue, I followed the entire softmod process again, and all but 1 of my games are working again, including 1 that didn't before.

I'm pretty much just operating on trial and error, hoping that I don't brick my wii in the process. O.o

i've followed the instructions to the letter and rechecked that the SD card is formatted correctly....

yes, i've followed the guide verbatim. first thing i did was connect via wi fi and updated to 4.0 firmware. i am using SDHC 4gig card.

from all the extra reading, i suspect the SDHC may be causing it... can anybody confirm? the guide says it should be okay up to 32gig card...

This guide worked great! I went to best buy and picked up an LU111 model - they show the serial numbers right on the box so I knew what not to get.

The only problem I ran into was the downgrade step - it failed and so I had to get IOS35-64-v1040.wad from http://www.mediafire.com/?zuyvzoznmmo and put it in my wad folder on the same sd card then loaded it from the wad manager using IOS36 (guessed).

Thanks for posting this guide - it would be great if there was a little more explanation about what each step was doing or where to find that information.

Also how safe is it to update software after this?

Does this work on a Japanese Wii? I can't understand anything when I go to the SD card menu.
