I keep getting that "this disk is not able to be read" error.
At first I always had this problem, but then I took out the sd card and I was able to play the game. I went out, turned off the wii, and now I'm not able to play the game anymore because "the disk it not able to be read" again.
I know the game works because it always shows up in the disk channel and I was able to play it once. Also, the warning screen with the wii remote always pops up, but right after that I get the error message. The sd card is still out.
Any ideas how to fix this? Thanks
Which version of the cIOS do you have installed? I was having issues with ghostbusters crashing at the warning screen but solved the problem by updating. Or if that doesn't work, try using version 13 instead of 13b... Do you have other games that do work? Is it just 1 game that gives this error? Do you have a cleaning disk? Your lens may be dirty. I ran the official nintendo wii cleaning disk through my system and was surprised at how much dirt and crap that came out.
my 2 cents anyways... good luck and post your results.

Thanks for the advice. I do not have a cleaning disk at the moment but I will see if I can get one and see what happens with that.
I currently only have this one backup game (zelda: TP) because I haven't had time to make any other ones. But like I said. I know it works because I was playing it before.
Maybe the actual problem is the lens because I just got the game to work after ejecting and reinserting the game countless times until the wii finally read the dang disk. But I don't want to do that all the time. So I'll try the lens cleaning.
Anyways, I followed the exact steps from this thread to install everything. Would I have to update the cIOS as you mentioned in the fix to your problem and also do the 13 instead of 13b? If so how do I do that?
if you go to softmii.org (redirects you to a site, but it is essentially the same site), register and download cios38 13a/b and get them both and give it a shot. I have never tried running a backup of TP. I just got TP to do the TP hack (legal copy... can try doing a backup tonight and see what happens). Another thought would be to download some other backup loader and see if that works (run it through the homebrew channel).
just a thought...
hope this helps and I will back up zelda tonight and give it a shot. It could be you had a rough burn. Is the disk clean? Do you notice any discoloration on the disk (such as possibly an eyelash on the disk when it was burned or too much heat causing the dye to warp)?

Just signed up just to post in this thread and help others out like I needed!
I had big troubles with softmodding my 4.0E Wii to play backed up copies. I followed this guide perfectly and I kept getting the "Couldn't find hacks.ini neither on FAT nor on NAND!" message.
I tried and tried over. I renamed the correct PAL hacks file from "hacks.ini" to just "hacks" many times. Couldn't work it out. Then I read that people using SDHC weren't being successful. Apparently Preloader doesn't the SDHC format.
So I got a micro SD card adapter and found a normal SD micro card and copied all the files onto it. Sure it would work I followed the process and again got the annoying message saying "hacks.ini" couldn't be found.
I finally remembered to rename them to just "hacks" without the ini file format at the end. It worked perfectly!
So could someone, the OP or a mod, put in the instructions that a standard SD card is required and not a SDHC!
It would of saved me about and hour. Cheers!

I get wifi tomorrow so I'm going to softmod my wii using Larry's guide. My question is will backup games run through the disc channel or homebrew channel? It sounds like your system will screw up if you run it through the disc channel and not homebrew. Can someone clarify? Also when new updates come out should I avoid them until the forums have an update?
I'm new to the wii modding scene. My blackbox and 360 are both modded which I thought was pretty easy. The wii is booger though...or so it seems

update:
I recently tried a backup of luxor and during the loading screen it told me to check my disk as it may be bad. I ejected it and put it back in and it seemed to work... until I hit level 2-1. Then it locked up the wii completely. I reburned it onto the same media (cheap memorex 16x disks) at 1x speed (4x was the actual speed but I set it to 1x) and it worked flawlessly (so far). And from inspecting the bottom of the disk, it did make a difference in how it was burned. The slower one has a more consistent dye whereas the quickly burned one has rings in it in places.
hope this helps

I have managed to get the backup of zelda:TP working. Every once in a while it has a disk read error but then I just take it out and put it back in and it is fine.
I didn't notice any abnormality on the bottom of the disk. Next time I will try to burn at 1x speed as well then (already thought 4x was slow but oh well, whatever works).
Still working on getting that lens cleaner as well since that may be a problem.
Thanks for your help though. Just need to find some more games to test now...

Hi all
let me start by saying what a great guide this is. the first one that worked first time. you missed the s of hacks in step 5 and had me going for a bit :)
everything works fine, i have one small problem. all games load fine from the disc channel except tiger woods 2010. The wii completely ignores this disc although it works fine with backup loader 0.3g? is it possible the iso is a ntsc? and thats whats screwing it. im running 4.0e?
i ran scared of bootmii nand backups. can anyone suggest a good tut to follow?
thanks again for all your hard work and taking the time to share.

my experience is that disc channel loads faster and has less issues....if you play rock band or guitar here sometimes peripherals are not detected when launching from the backup launcher but will work if played like a normal disc from disc channel...same with usb to ethernet adaptor...otherwise i wouldnt be able to play backups online
tiger 10 works fine from disc channel for me....
it can be a problem if you load out of region games and a new update is released...but for all current games might be a way to go if you get stuck (super paper mario for example) tying to play a backup though launchers
currently playing captain rainbow what a nutty game...

My guide didn't brick anything. If you followed the directions then you should not brick.

Firstly than for the guide.
I am having issues with preloader, not reading my ini file.
I have formated my 4GB SDHC car several times, and saved it with and without the ini.
and its saved in the route folder the sd card.
Preloader is unable to read or find an sd card?
any help appreciated

For some reason preloader has a problem reading SDHC cards and therefore does not recognize the .ini file.
Just use a SD card that is smaller than 2 GB and you should be fine. It wouldn't work for me with a 2 GB card, but then I found an old 256 MB card and there were no problems and this guide worked perfectly.
If you have other problems you should try reading all the previous posts in this thread because a lot of these and other problems have been addressed.

First off, good job on the guides, very easy to follow. Ive followed your main guide, then this guide, everything was smooth. I backed up punch-out and unfortunately, the wii did not read it. I used a sony dvd+r and burned at 2x speed using imgburn. Disc channel says it cant read it, and neo gamma gives an error message (DVD read error [972]). I've been at it the whole day. Got any clues? (followed guide exactly, so u should know what ios's im running)

i have found a few games of varying ages i have dont load via the disc channel, the icon is not produced to show the disc is in the drive. i'm pretty sure this is a problem with the disc and where it came from.
did you select any other options in the preloader other than the one suggested in the guide??
thanks

Sweet, got it working with Memorex DVD-R. Thanks for the tip guys.
Just for future reference:
1)Gigaware 4gb SDHC does NOT detect hacks.ini
2)Sony DVD+R = NOT compatible
Maybe could update info in the guides about standard SD cards and DVD-Rs.

The guide already says if your using a SDHC SD Card and the hacks.ini file can not be read to use a non-sdhc SD card.
Also some DVD+R can work. So try to find media that works for you.

okay, everything's immaculate. just one more thing, wi-fi connection? Wifi tests run okay in the settings, but what about connecting to the shop, internet, news, online play, etc. I must've missed something, but is it possible? I dont wanna try it until confirmed.

Great guide it was easy to follow, I've installed everything listed. The problem I'm having is my my back-up iso copy of supper mario galaxy isn't working from the disc channel, unable to read disc. I made three copies, burning at full speed, then 2x speed. I also have a back up of wii play and used wbfs to put it on my flash drive and the screen goes blank. For mario I'm using dvd+r. I just used back up loader and it said error 972. Any solutions?
