Could be SW discs as well though I have 2.0's and when I boot it up the first time it was fine but after then it's like the pstwo recognized the disc and started making this terrible grinding noise everytime it was installed. Only the SW disc though it wouldn't do it to originals. To the guy above burnt movies on DVDR is not the same as a burnt game on DVDR or else the games would boot up the same as well. Most people aren't selling v12 chips because they're crapping out all the lasers with voltage spikes and whatnot which for some reason the new slims can't handle the pressure.

There are no reports on ps2lid successes/failures simply because they haven't shipped yet. Those who have been following the ps2cover website may have noticed that the status of the item has gone from "preorder now, will ship out on 12/8" to simply "preorder" to its current "preorder now, will ship in one week." I placed an order for one myself two weeks ago and haven't received any delivery or tracking information yet; personally, I get the feeling they won't ship for another couple of weeks, at best. In any case, I'll post a report on how well it works once I actually get it.

As for the dodgy v12 PStwo lasers, it's pretty well known that these first batches of consoles have a high percentage of problems, electrically speaking. So it's quite possible that tape modders have reported the most problems precisely because tape modding was the first and most popular scheme for swapping; in comparison, there were very few switch/straw modders around to report any PStwo failures. But the fact remains that I've heard very few (if any) reports of PStwos dying after straw/switch modding, whereas there are quite a few reports of consoles working just fine the first time after sensor taping -- and then promptly dying thereafter. You can interpret that however you wish.

Regardless of which mod you use, I have these recommendations: 1) No matter what, keep your warranty intact or make sure your PStwo is returnable. This is pretty self-explanatory. 2) Keep your PStwo in a cool, well-ventilated area because it's prone to overheating. 3) Keep your console plugged into a surge protector and never turn it on/off repeatedly. The v12 is very susceptible to current fluctuations and consequent overload. 4) If you decide on the tape mod, do *not* under any circumstances use glue, unless you're extremely confident in your gluing "skills." Personally, I'd also add on an additional recommendation of keeping CDR/CD use to a minimum, if possible, because the PS2/two laser clearly works a lot harder when reading both backup or even original CDs, judging from the increased noise (this is because the data is spaced further apart on lower-density media like CDs, causing the laser to move around more during data reading). Hopefully, these guidelines will help some new PStwo owners out.

starsixty: Did you remove or disable your PStwo's disc brake? It's not necessary for swapping, but doing so gets rid of the horrible grinding, from what I've read.

bob07977: The Swap Magic discs were never meant for PSone usage. Get the specialized Breaker Pro swap disc for that.

I would love to get a mod-chip but the swap magic discs are my only choice. I can easily buy a mod-chip off the internet but I don't know anyone who can install it. There are no stores near me that do this type of thing. It was a lot of fun walking into Funcoland and asking them if they could install mod-chips. They basically kicked me out of the store. This was when I had no idea that mod-chips are legal. Anyway, there will be no way I'm going to walk into a Gamestop and ask them.

If you have no compunctions toward using a modchip, and if price is no object, you should wait for the DMS4 E.Z.I. or E.Z.I. Pro modchips to come out early next year. They involve absolutely no soldering (they attach via clip-on), so they should be a snap to install. They're very full-featured, too, being basically solderless versions of the regular DMS4 chips, and the DMS line has a fairly good reputation. They'll probably be pretty pricey, though; I'm guessing they'll go for around $70-80, since the regular wired versions run at about $50. You can check the info on these chips at http://www.dms4.com

actually these "dodgy" ps2s are burning out regardless whether there is a modchip installed or not. it is a fault with the ps2 units themselves. there is a diode board available that stops the spikes happening and in theory should protect the unit. the ps2 lazer should be capable of handling the strains of dvdr media as sony says that it is compatible and yes this will add more stress to the unit but it will not burn out straight away, but will inevitably reduce the lifespan of the lazer unit. and to whoever is moaning about get a modchip and it is burning out because people are using swapmagic discs thankyou for your opinion however it wasnt very constructive.

Sweet I just finished doing the mod with the plastic and everything went fine. Although the power button is a lil iffy, when I push it but that's because I put a hefty amount of tape to cover the external switch.

Its been a while since ive been here but i think I figured out what the problem was with people thinking their laser's had 'burned' out.

I was fixin up my sister's b/f's pstwo to play games and when I finished.... it all of a sudden wouldnt work. The lens wouldne slide down when I turned on the ps2. I began to make sure that that all the cables to the lens were secure. They were.

I then began to move the little black thing the tab in the back was sitting on. When I got it in the right spot, the lens would start to move like normal. I use doing this with tweasers. I stuck each leg of the tweasers on the 2 back solder connection the black thing sits on and it would work like normal.

So for all you that are having the ps2 not work after getting the tabs down.... try messing around with it like I did til it gets in the right spot. If you cant seem to get it in the right spot, connecting those 2 points should do it for you. You may have to solder a piece of wire down there to get it to work.

Hope this helps people with the laser problem.

i installed the ghost switch also. the cap securely fits over the rear left sensor and the other clip installs in the front lid sensor. As you put the top back on you'll notice that the front clip is now securely in place also and will not move. Must catch on the sensor some how. I put the swap dvd in and hit reset and the load screen comes up. Just swap the swap magic dvd for a game and hit x. It should load fine unless it is a game that needs a fix. there is a list of such games at swapmagicfix dot com. let me know which game you are trying and what media you have, and how you burned it. We'll figure it out.

UPDATE,

I have used the ghost switch which is the same as other tape mods. Doesn't work with any dvdloader games. this is what may make the flip top better. sometimes you want the ps2 to know you opened the tray.

I had a question for you guys. Why don't you call Sony? After all, it is not illegal to play your backup games. Call them and ask why the hell there are so many problems with playing backup games. If they tell you that there is a technical issue with the laser, then return your unit and wait for them to fix the problem. Calling them can't hurt anything. Sorry to kinda' jump in, but I've been browsing this thread for a while, and I want to know if the new PS2 will work before I go out and buy one.

LOLOLOLOLOLOL. There is no way they are going to tell you, and according to them (and many countries), making backups of your games IS illegal.

actually it is ILLEGAL to copy any game and music. People want to believe otherwise but it isn't true. If you get caught downloading mp3s you can't just buy all of the albums and say "see I own them anyway". Games are no different, at least in the U.S.

The new fliptop that they are selling with the swapmagic discs will work fine, right? I think I may just get that instead of the ghost switch.

The straw mod is extremely easy to do and cost you nothing. I dunno why u would want to spend money on somethign when you can do it urself wit some straw. The only real tricky part is getting the sensor by the hindge. The trick is to cut a piece of straw about 1 inch long, then simple cut that length wise so you have a half tube. Then just wedge the straw in between the screw tower to the right of the sensor and thats it. Just make sure ur straw piece extends far enough that it goes to the screw tower on the left so it gets held in place when u snap the ps2 back together.

In life, the test will always come first and the lesson later...
