I've got the REAL (not backup)Chin. version of GT4 and would love to play.
I've got Swap Magic 3 ver3.3 and Flip Top.
As everyone knows, this doesn't work.
Any ideas???
thanks!

this is to the ppl who live by chinatown y dont any of you guys just go to chinatown game store and ask them to see all there bootleg game and get a bootleg copy of GT4. and guess wat i bet you they somehow fit that shyt on a cdr. i scan their file and they have a dummy file to shrink down the size but you can only play it with a modded ps2. i try to burn image and put into hd but it stop at a point of burning and start getttin errors same wit hdloader. i installed it got to like 69 % then started to get tons of error. it went up to a few hundred thousand reading error. u could also get some copy of other games some that weren even release in US like kaido battle 1 and 3 only 15$ cheaper than ur normal game.

I think he's talking about HK PRESSED dvd silvers, it's not CDr, but it's not DVD-+r even, it's pressed dvd-rom, manufactured the same way as originals, and sold at a tenth... They work on modded ps2 the same as original imports...

Maybe it is possible to buy this "chinatown" version of GT4 DVD-rom and create back-up .iso from it? Then we would know if it works or not (where the problem is i mean).

i guess that an iso made out a pressed silver would be just like the iso from the original, i don't think that's the problem...

this thread is has become a bit long :)
to sum it up, GT4 iso doesn't work, this may be because:
1) copy protection not yet cracked
2) different writing strategies
3) modchips not able to read successfully DVD+R DL
HK pressed silvers work in any case:
if it was a copy protection, cloning the original by pressing the disc would recreate the protection and make the copy work anyway (i think);
silvers are pressed copies, not burned, so it's the same "writing strategy" than the original;
they are DVD-ROM9 discs, not DVD+R so they can be read successfully by modchips...
for private backups:
to check the first we only have to wait that someone who knows what he's doing gets his hands on it...
we still have to try burning with Parallel Track Path and find the right break sector to exclude the second... for the third one, everyone needs to try by himself since every modchip is different, but trying with different bit setting/book type has proved unsuccessful...
did i leave anything out? :)

There should be a way to discover the exact break sector for burning with PLP... and here we need someone with the original GT4 or a pressed copy...
anyone who has it should open DVD Decrypter in the iso write mode and report the info given, for example:
BENQ DVD DD DW1620 B7C9 (ATA)
Current Profile: DVD+R DL
Disc Information:
Status: Complete
Erasable: No
Sessions: 1
Sectors: 2.989.376
Size: 6.122.242.048 bytes
Time: 664:20:26 (MM:SS:FF)
DVD+R DL Boundary Information:
L0 Data Zone Capacity: 2.086.912
Changeable: No
Physical Format Information (ADIP):
Disc ID: MKM-001-00
Book Type: DVD+R DL
Part Version: 1
Disc Size: 120mm
Maximum Read Rate: Not Specified
Number of Layers: 2
Track Path: Opposite Track Path (OTP)
Linear Density: 0.293 um/bit
Track Density: 0.74 um/track
First Physical Sector of Data Area: 196.608
Last Physical Sector of Data Area: 16.580.607
Last Physical Sector in Layer 0: 2.283.519
Physical Format Information (Last Recorded):
Disc ID: MKM-001-00
Book Type: DVD-ROM
Part Version: 1
Disc Size: 120mm
Maximum Read Rate: Not Specified
Number of Layers: 2
Track Path: Opposite Track Path (OTP)
Linear Density: 0.293 um/bit
Track Density: 0.74 um/track
First Physical Sector of Data Area: 196.608
Last Physical Sector of Data Area: 15.396.159
Last Physical Sector in Layer 0: 2.283.520
This is the (not working) copy i made with the DVD-ROM book type.
Maybe with the info from an original cd we could figure something out...

1. I dont think there is a protection.
2. The modchips boots dvd9 copys pretty well(hksilvers)
The problem was and is! the ptp and otp . you can only write otp on dvd+r dl ( read the specs man! ).
try to extract l1 - reverse the l1 iso bytewise -should be ptp like then :) - padding data check lba with isobuster and burn with layer breakpoint set.

so why then does it not work when using winhiip to transfer it right onto HDD?
Is there something tha doesnt allow hd loader to read a dvd9? Does anyone have any other dvd9 game running on hd loader?
I too have that black screen when playing off my hdd, but I see the first screen just fine as well.
Its kinda anoying to know that the whole game is probably there, but you cant play it.

Sorry I haven't replied sooner guys and gals. Ok, I guess copying by changing the bitsetting doesn't work.
Ok, I found out some more info on how DVD-ROM 9 disks are produced.
Here's a quote I read:
"DVD-ROMs that require a DVD-9 (dual layer disc) must be premastered and the data written to two DLTs, one for each layer. Two DVD-Rs are not suitable because the two layers must be a single volume with one file system instead of two. The final disc will be formatted as a parallel track path disc (unlike DVD-Videos which are usually opposite track path) with the file system data on layer 0."
Maybe the game needs to be copied with PTP and with the file system data on Layer 0.
I noticed gotenks82's info from the DVDdecrypter, it copied it as OTP. I'm not sure if the file system data is on Layer 0 by interpreting gotenks82's info. I assume that the file system is on Layer 0.
If anyone knows of a program that can copy it as PTP it would definately help open some doors.
When all else fails, just take a bat and beat it senseless...

Oh, I just realized something...
I think I know the reason why DVD-Video requires Opposite Track Path.
Logically, once a DVD drive reads to the end of a movie disk on Layer 0, it needs to allow continuous stream of video by going to the next bit of data directly underneath to Layer 1. So, as the movie is playing from Layer 1, the laser on the DVD drive reads inward towards the center. Hence the term, Opposite Track Path.
Now, it seems data on the other hand doesn't require this since it needs random access to anywhere on the disk. This would imply that Parallel Track Path would be more suitable to use since the game uses the PS2 to create animation in memory rather than use actual DVD quality video footage.
In the end, I believe by making the DVD+R DL to be copied as a PTP rather than a OTP, it should allow it to work. I believe GT4 has some sort of check to see if it's a PTP or OTP disk since the makers probably already know that most home DVD burners copy as OTP. This may be the only thing that's preventing a copy.
Well, like always, I could be wrong. But good luck.
When all else fails, just take a bat and beat it senseless...

sounds logical to me, but why would it not work in the HD loader then?
Was the copy I have posibly ripped as an otp type setup, so the second layer is backwards? Is that even possible?

Stinky, the problem is that as far as i know HDloader does not support duallayer images, I mean that when the game checks for files in the second layer, HDL does not know where to redirect the calls... at least that's what i came up with reading other posts...
I would really want to try xOR's method, i think it may work, but i don't really know how to do it, what programs could help... any clue? :)
how to rip only the second layer, and how to recreate the whole iso with the first layer and the second layer reverted and padded...

I personally havent tried to burn my GT4 backup image im not sure what one you guys got....i got the xw-gt4-cht release, but when i open it in DVD Decrypter heres the info i get.
AXV CD/DVD-ROM 2.0B (SCSI)(I mounted it with Alcohol 120)
Current Profile: DVD-ROM
Disc Information:
Status: Complete
Erasable: No
Sessions: 1
Sectors: 2,989,376
Size: 6,122,242,048 bytes
Time: 664:20:26 (MM:SS:FF)
Physical Format Information (Last Recorded):
Book Type: DVD-ROM
Part Version: 1
Disc Size: 120mm
Maximum Read Rate: 10.08Mbps
Number of Layers: 1
Track Path: Parallel Track Path (PTP)
Linear Density: 0.293 um/bit
Track Density: 0.74 um/track
First Physical Sector of Data Area: 196,608
Last Physical Sector of Data Area: 3,185,983
Last Physical Sector in Layer 0: 0
Since i dont have any Swap Magic discs at the moment i havent burned and tried but you guys were saying that OTP wouldnt work, i guess whoever ripped this one used PTP. I was wondering if you guys think this would work? I also noticed that it only says 1 layer rather then two but if i open it with Nero it picks it up as a DVD9 5.7GB or whatever.

hi,
i´m not very familiar with all this ptp / otp etc but may be i have some usefull information; i hab a mdf back up which i converted into an iso file; with apache i opend this file and extracted the files of both layers to a new folder;
i used the cd/dvd generator to build a iml file from all the game files; with iml2iso i created a new iso and transfered it to the hdd; the result is the same...first screne and then nothing more than black...but maybe it can help
i can´t wait to play the game :-)

DVD-9 will never work on hdd. you have to wait until dvd5 rip.
no way it works ( there has to be massive! patching and there is no realtime debugger so forget it )
Maybe someone with the retail jap cann tell me the correct offset for gt4l1.vol on layer 1 ???

what size should the iso be? I got 6.113521779 gigs. I have also seen posted 6.6 gig and 5.7 gig. 6.11 gig turns out to be 6,641,570,816 bytes, which could be interpreted as 6.6 gig. Which is correct?

stinky, until someone discovers a method to succesfully burn in PTP (or "fake PTP :)")don't waste DVD+DLs :)
xOR, doesn't the dvddecrypter info from the original help to estimate the break sector?
I'm just guessing but i know that L0 must be >= L1, so if the last phisical sector is 2,151,631
and the first is 196.608, there are 1,955,023 sectors on layer 0, and 3,230,336-1,955,023 = 1,275,313 sectors on layer 1.
I don't know the specs for PLP burning, so i'm not sure where to pick the break sector but you seem a lot more expert than me so i'll leave it to you now :)
