I formatted with XP (NTFS) and with the USBExtreme win32 software, neither way worked. I just decided it wasn't going to work for me and went back to swap magic for my backups. Thanks for the advice.

I think ur suppost to format it FAT32 then use the win32 software. Doesnt matter now but anyways swap magic is a good way to go.

I hate to be a total @$$ but what about USB 1.1 do people NOT understand? Here's a link to USB standard: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_1.1 The Playstation 2 has two USB 1.1 ports. If you EVER (and I do mean, EVER) hear someone talk some Bulls**t about PS2 having a USB 2.0 port...smack them very hard. It's not true at all! The PlayStation 2 spec is a low speed rate of 1.5 Mbit/s. That's very slow!! The official PlayStation.com site says the PS2 has "2 USB 1.1 ports with an OHCI-compatible controller".

So the next time someone complains about the speed of the USB port, tell them this. "It's slower than the DVD-drive because it is a USB 1.1 port, you dips**t".

If you want a fast xfer speed, get HDcombo or XCM HD Connect. Or just buy a fat PS2. Stop whining about the slow speeds.

I am new but found one site to be very helpful getting started...with a huge list of tested games.

http://www.xafiers-home.com/ps2/

Hope this helps.

Yea that site is awsome but i think xafier havent updated that thing in forever. Some games on the compatibility list is false info tho it says they work when they actually dont. Anyone know any new or recent games that works with USb extreme???

Hi I'm a newbie to Ps2 as well as forums, (I own an Xbox).
I advised my friend to buy USBExtreme for his slimline Ps2,
vers scph-70002, so he could backup his games.
Now I feel guilty because it only backed up half his games.
I've borrowed it for the week and have tried a few things.
I found an image for USBAdvance and HDLoader. Using the totally INSANE app written buy Xafier I placed them on the usb hdd. I then used USBExtreme to load USBAdvance which worked but was pointless as it is a copy of USBExtreme. HDLoader worked but I am using a slimline Ps2 with no internal Hdd, so that was pointless.
Next I found an Image of Swap Magic 3.6, INSANE could not back it up it so I burnt it to a CD and used the original USBExtreme Windows client app. Managed to copy it over and when I loaded it with USBExtreme it showed the Title screen then the screen went blank and nothing. Keep in mind I have a slimline Ps2, vers scph-70002, with no flip top lid or slide tools.
Maybe an older version Ps2 may have better luck.

robbo80, Swap Magic (any version) will NOT work unless it is the factory original. It's the same reason a PS2 game can't be backed up & then direct booted. There is "boot sector" information encoded onto the Swap Magic CD & DVD at the factory. This information is *not* writeable with a standard home DVD/CD writer. Again, it is the same thing with PS2 discs. So i you want to use SM, you'll need to buy an original. Then, you use your factory-pressed, original SM & boot USB Extreme/HD Advance. It should find your USB drive.
Google on XCM HD Connect and visit http://www.hdcombo.com for a much faster, reliable alternative to the USB 1.1 port. Even DVD is faster loading than USB 1.1.

brinkiwll, if you have a HDD the partition can be one BIG partition or several small ones. I was able to partition a drive with the first part as the regular windows boot (NTFS) and the second part as the USBExtreme. It found the second part & played the games from there, no problem. The HDD can be as small as 10GB and as large as 200GB. I don't know above 200GB, but you can partition it however you like and try it.

xHardc0re I checked out http://www.hdcombo.com , now thats a good idea. The installation looks pretty easy to. Ide hdd will run way faster than usb and probably dvd as well. It is a pitty that I have already bought USBExtreme, but maybe I could buy the hdcombo and use the 120gig hdd I bought for my external usb drive. Then plonk an old 8 gig xbox drive in the external usb case, use USBExtreme to load the free version of HDLoader which can then locate the internal 120 gig hdd. NICE!!!

I thought that with HD combo you need a mod chip in order for it to work or you need to solder something which = opening up ur PS2. Am i wrong with this info???

Yes, the HDcombo will need soldering and a modchip to run. Everything is on that site, all you need to know. Why don't you read it? http://www.hdcombo.com. They even have install pics. Go there now.

hey all
i referred heavily to this forum before purchasing usbextreme... and since my enclosure is taking extremely f@king long to arrive i tested with a usb thumbdrive. since it was recognised (quashing my fears of hd rejection *15gb*) i attempted to load up metal slug 4 as it was the only game that fitted. xafiers app and the windows gui refused to recognise the drive, however the dos interface copied without a problem. game plays fine, awful load times but i was prepared for that =D
just posting cos this doesnt seem to follow precedent; i was surprised at how indiscriminating usbxt was..
btw attempting to use my ipod as hd - wasnt recognised, although i didnt attempt to format. however i could charge it off the ps2... fun fact :P

using v12 slimline unmodded

I just got USBeXTREME with 120 HDD. Has anyone noticed that the install directions offered on the usbextreme website says that you can format your drive in NTFS for more space. Is this optional or should you do this? I did try to give NTFS it and my system (winXP Professional) says that format didn't complete correctly. Anyone have this problem? Later i go on to use the USBeXTREME format tool and install a ps2 backup and it works. What gives?

The PROLOADER 1.0 is the latest software solution that provides an easy way to use your legal homebrew software or backups on your PS2 or PSTWO console. All consoles are supported and the software is furnished on two different medias : CD and DVD.

Launch homebrew software, imports and backups
No solder or modchip needed
Big TOC of 702Mo no need of Breaker Pro
PS2/PSTWO tools included
Keep your warranty
Protect your console with use of a hard disk
100% legal solution
Easy to use
DVD-Region free
Works with or without FlipTop cover
Compatible with most ATA/IDE hard disks
Support big hard disks above 120Go

Apparently this software has three in one. Can launch games from an internal Hdd an external Usb Hdd as well as performing the swap disk trick. Thats what the Website says anyway, hope it is not all hype. But those thinking about buying UsbExtreme may want to wait a couple of weeks and try PROLOADER 1.0.

Not going to beat you over the head, but recommend you read this thread from the beginning atleast 4 pages in: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/252193 Believe me, EVERY possible question about PS2 has already been asked & answered there. Spend 10 mins reading...you'll find your answer. Good luck.

i recommend anyone with problems read this entire thread from the first page and see if their problem has been addressed... its unlikely that you have anything new on your hands.

ux, i hope you realise you cant use your hd case with hdloader/advance, you need to put it in the back. the case will only work with usbextreme, and im not sure that usbxt likes to be burnt... try the cracked usbadvance.

i hav just got my enclosure and am happy to report that all is functional... got 4 games working, all on xafier's list... so thanks to all in this thread... etc etc...

yeah if you hav a slimline thats one way... i thought you had a v7... you can use the expansion bay i think... not entirely sure as i am using a v12 and have no experience with fat models... if you do have a slimline check out hdcombo.com for a much easier way. connecting the hd directly means you have to use hdloader, hdadvance or similar.

what can i say, you have a choice of either finding usbadvance somewhere, paying a professional to install a hdcombo, doing it yourself, or purchasing a commercial usbextreme. the solder points on hdcombo arent thaaaat small, if you have previous soldering experience you shouldnt have a lot of trouble. if not, well hey ur running out of options.

Hello all. I can't format my external HD in NTFS from windows XP. The instructions for usbextreme say to format first in NTFS through windows and than use the format tool for usbextreme to format it again(which is done in FAT32) i go ahead and install a backup of my game and it works. now i try and install another and about halfway thru it says "can't copy". i formated again(still not able to do the NTFS part) than installed the backup that was giving me problems. installs fine??? than i try and put the other backup on the HD and it gives me the same error as before. leads me to believe that it is a conflict with format of hd and file sizes but i really have no idea. any thoughts?
