When I attempt Alkohols method I get an error instantly and nothing is written on the disc. It seems my drive tries to reserve the tracks which of course don't fit on my disc. Is there anyway around this (Eg, new firmware?) or do I just need to get a new drive? if so what is the best dual-layer drive to buy. all the log for writing is below. I'm using cheap 'budget' DVD-Rs and have a Sony DW-U18A with stock UYS1 firmware (I haven't touched the firmware). I have read that my drive is a re-badged Liteon-812s or something like that, if that helps. Thanks.
RJSzynal,

What does it says? Does it said like "not enough space" on disc? If so, then you just click "OK" and "continue" to burn anyway. Later, when DVD Decrypter write the very last file onto the very last edge of blank disc (I believe it should be 88% of completion), it will give you another "I/O Error" - just hit "CANCEL" and DVD Decrypter will do a quick finalized on your disc, then it should eject the newly backed up disc out from the burner. Presto, you're done.

By the way, check your dvd burner for it's media compatibility and its recommended burning of speeds. Perhaps, try some other good brand of +R or -R. Lower your speed if you can or try it at max and see what's the result. I did mine at 8X and it plays on my PS2 v9 flawlessly.

Note: you don't need to use the "TOXIC PATCH" - DVD Decrypter all alone can handle the job easily.

RJSzynal,

Hummmm.... is that "I/O" error comes up right away or is it near the end like it has 88% of backed up completed already? If it's 88% already, then simply click "CANCEL" and DVD Decrypter should do a quick disc finalized, and you should be all square away. It seems like you're using good quality media (TYG02 should be ok.) What is the speed you're burning? Perhaps try the +R and see what's up. By the way, if you're backing up with a DVD+R, you need to change the "booktype" to "DVD-ROM" -- I believe if your burner is SONY, then go to "TOOLS, DRIVE, Change BookType, LITE ON, Change For (Drive DVD+R/+R DL media), New setting to "DVD-ROM," click CHANGE and OK.

Anyways, here's my settings on my DVD Decrypter. You can take a look at it and see what's up alright. Here's what I have:

****Settings****
I/O - "Transfer Lenght" (Automatic)
Options [Check] on (Ignore Read Errors)
Software Read Errors (20)
Software Write Error (20)

ISO WRITE MODE - [check] Enable Burn Proof
[check] Lock Volume - Exclusive Access

ISO READ MODE - [check] Create MDS file
[check] Remove IFO Structure Protection
[check] Remove IFO RC Protection

File MODE - [check] Ignore Unreferenced VTS Sets

Hope this help a little, if not a lot.

There I/O error comes up at the very begininng of the proccess (before it even touches the disc, it is still blank after each attempt) I was wondering if manually removing all the data from the ISO after a particular bit so that is the same size as my DVD-R would workbecause that is what happens anyway when doing it your method, also how much space do I need to leave for finallising if any?
Thanks

@RJSzynal. I had same problem and got round it by splitting file with a program called HJSplit. You need to split file to 4450 Mb (Make sure that Megabytes is selected), then change the name of the .001 file it creates back to .iso (Best to change the whole filename too, because otherwise it'll be the same as your original. Just name it something like "image.iso"). You can the burn this image with DVD Decrypter. My image was toxic patched BTW.

I'm just about to try Swap Magic with this one so I'll report back later peeps.

looks like the hex editor idea won't work because it tries to put the whole 5GB into ram but I only have 1GB of RAM. Is there a way of splitting the file (prehaps in command prompt) in the same way that u can join them. I'll keep on working on this.
I have Swap Magic 3.3 so if this works then thats two swap magic users with a semi-working backup.
Cheers

@simpsim1
just read your post, that is excellent. I'm doing mine with 4489Mb because my disc holds 4,707,319,808Bytes, this should leave me with 250Kb left on the disc(because that number divided by 1024 then divided again gives 4489.25). If it works then this will be a pretty strong method for people to use untill an actual DVD5 is released.
Thanks

RJSzynal,

This sounds kind a odd to me because I don't have that "I/O error" from the very beginning. I'm sorta clueless to why you're getting that error everytime you're going to do a back up. The last possibility I could think of is try to use other DVD+R quality media like "verbatim, fuji, maxell, Sony" and see what's the result. Is your blank media fairly new or does it look scratched?

As far as manually removing some files/data to make it fit onto a DVD-R disc -- this method, I haven't done it before, so I can't really say "yes or no." However, I strongly believe that if you know what file or data to be deleted and not needed then it can be done with the proper tools and procedures.

Like I said; I simply used DVD Decrypter to do the job:

MODE, ISO, READ,
Choose my "source" and "destination" <-- on my HD and named it GT4BACKUP
Then click on "Decrypt", waited until it's finished
Choose MODE, ISO, WRITE, select my "source" <-- from my HD (GT4.MDS)
Then click on my "destination" on my dvd burner and burn it with 8X on FUJI DVD+R blank
DVD Decrypter gives me a "warning of not enough space on blank disc"
Do I want to burn anyways? Yes... OK to continue
DVD Decrypter burn all the way to 88% and gives me an "I/O error"
Then I just click on "CANCEL" and DVD Decrypter did a quick disc finalized
DVD drive ejects the backed up disc out

Put in my Swap Magic 3.6 Plus (DVD disc) in my PS2 console, it loaded to main menu
Open up Flip Top, take out Swap Magic disc and put in my backed up DVD5 of GT4
Hit [X] to boot up, presto...... it's loading, working and now I'm racing it like crazy.

I get 'Not a valid PS2 disc' when I try the disc.
What I think basiclly happens is your drive burns the first 88% of the ISO to disc then realises it has run out of space and finishes. Is the drive you're writing with a dual-layer drive? if so I believe what happens is DVD Decrypter tricks the drive into thinking it is writing to dl media then writes what it can to the disc (have you tried it with DVD-R or just DVD+R?)it may be that + media is better for being written as DVD-ROM than - media.
Lastly, simpsim1 has your toxic patched disc worked and is it + or -, also is your drive dual-layer?
Thanks

P.S. my disc has no scratches, it is perfect. Also does anyone know how much space I need to leave at the end of the disc for finalising? Thanks

P.S.S. I just thought of another idea, how about I burn the cut down iso with the sony mastering program thing (CD/DVD-ROM generator 1.20)

RJSyznal, My drive is NEC ND2500A. Drive was firmware patched to make it DL compatible. Media used is Arita, which is just your Basic Ritek DVD-R. Cheap but reliable disks which I've been using for sometime with PS2 backups. I think Alkohol was using Fuji, which I haven't had any experience with as yet.

I wrote the disk at 1x speed which seemed to be the key to the whole thing. It boots with the patch. Its very hit and miss as to whether it gets any further than the GT loading screen but it works sometimes and that's a start isn't it??

Oh yeah, the rebuilding. Well I did something with Sony CDVDGEN a while ago and it renders the toxic patch inoperable. So you get to the copyright screen, and that's all she wrote! Which if I remember rightly is where this whole thing started in the first place.

So rebuilding, which is gonna be the best way to get a fully working DVD-5, is going to have to be patched in some other way... which the guys are working on at the minute.

BTW anyone got a link to that Hex Editor? Gotta have a little delve into this IOPRP300.IMG file myself.

@RJSzynal,This is from the DVD Decrypter site:
Anyone who had the problem with 3.5.3.0 of burns just aborting the second you started them, your IDE drivers need updating. They don't currently support locking volumes for exclusive access, which means another program could interrupt the burn and cause it to fail. You have been warned!
This may be your problem although you do have the latest version of decrypter.Try updating your ide drivers.

You can also try different media.

No typo error,I said that RJSzynal has the latest version(as you can see in his DVD Decrypter report)I did say in my post that he has the latest version. What I meant was that although he has the latest version,it still wouldn't hurt to see if there is an update for his ide drivers.

:) no worries,i could be wrong, but i don't think it would be the IDE's,unless he's running an old comp or even an old OS.win xp seems to always keep these things updated,of course it has to be enabled.i remember i had a problem with decrypter here awhile ago, turns out it was where i was downloading from.i don't know whether there were some setup files missing or what, but downloaded from official site and it came right...*shrugs* so i honestly don't know what the go is

I have ripped to dvd 5 successfully using alcohols method.

I went into settings and set up decrypter same as posted earlier. Used a shintaro dvd+r 4.7g disc burnt at 1X. Presto boots beautifully!!! I did try earlier on a dvd-r disc but it wouldnt let me burn at all. Using dvd+r it just let me overburn. Got to 83% and said I/O error I clicked cancel and it finalised the disc. Works a treat. Same as my dvd-r copy, no arcade and what have you but still works a charm...except I dont have to boot it with the dvd9 backup method I had going earlier. Nice work alkohol!!! Ohh and i did have mine patched as I used the backup I already had on my hard drive which I had already patched for when I did the dvd9. Works well....

@crowy,

I don't know if you're referring this to me or RJSzynal regarding "book type settings"? However, I was able to change my Sony DRU 710A BYX4 Book Type Settings into DVD-ROM by clicking on Lite On. Therefore, I did mentioned earlier that perhaps "RJSzynal" may want to try to set his SONY Burner's book type into DVD-ROM and see what's the result.

Here's a "success" book type settings from my Sony: http://img283.echo.cx/my.php?image=image0011fh.png - hopefully, this load up. And click on the flick to enlarge.

@sed8ed,

Congratulation bro...!!! I'm glad to hear that you've made a successful backed up on a DVD5 as well. Don't you just love it and feel special? Yes... I was more than excited and blown away when I first made a successfully DVD5 backed up, perhaps it's because I can play and boot it up with my Swap Magic 3.6 Plus flawlessly. My first successful DVD5 was "83%" with the "TOXIC PATCH", but then I did another one "without" the TOXIC PATCH and it's 88% of success. Regardless of what percentage the backed up is, the main thing is that "I'm racing it like crazy and I'm souping up my TRUENO 86 and Skyline GTR" -- again, I haven't had any issue like freezing or black-out what-so-ever yet. Damn....some of them "international races" has a lot of laps man. Well, happy burning...!!!

I believe my problem is that my DVD writer is crap, it seems to be that the message being sent back is from my Drive. I wanted to buy a new dual layer one anyway, what would you guys say the best one is? It'll be ages before I buy it though cos I gotta save up for car insurance (£1300 for my first year). The rest of my computer is pretty uptodate (especially my Geforce 6800GT 256Mb)and I run XP pro, when I look on the internet I can't find new ide drivers for my motherboard (Abit AN7). From reading online I found that +R's don't have a booktype printed into them when they are made so u can change it to DVD-ROM whereas -R's have DVD-R imprinted into them when they are made. I'll be getting some +R's soon (because the new DVD player only records onto them and not -R's which I have loads of)so I'll try them when I get 'em. Lastly I can't download new firmware for my drive because the sites that have them are down (they seem to be ####.RPC1.com I think) because I was going to download the firmware with bitsetting enabled or the Liteon ones (because my drive is a rebadged liteon).
Thanks

P.S. I was watching this site for ages before I posted, I only really post if I have something to say, so if I disappear then I'm probably still watching.

I also tried getting it on a DVD5. It gets past the SEATBELTS bla bla screen and then SONY screen, then it makes a 'BLIP' ringing sound, and goes black.

Hmm. Oh well.

I used cheap DVD media and a GIGABYTE DVD writer with DVD Decrypter

I like to eat a piece of cheese...sometimes
