Thanks to your method i was able to burn my GT4 onto a 4.7gb dvd+r at 88%. All seems well so far haven't really tested it too much but from what i've played it's been working perfectly. I just had a few questions though....What percent are you at now???Just curious to know how long i can go in the game without me having to touch my original.

@black18,
Congratulations!! I'm glad that you've managed to get a backed up on a single layer DVD+R with 88% successfully. Well, to be honest, I haven't had any glitch or freezing what-so-ever yet. I'm trying to get all my "licenses" first. Other than the "arcade mode and main menu" - my backed up on DVD5 seems promising to me, and I will try to play as long and far as I can and see what's going to happen in the end. I've tried tons of methods trying to rebuild on 100% with this hard @ss GT4 on a DVD5 disc, however, it seems to be no lucks at this point.
Like I said earlier, I come to conclusion that the 88% completion with the settings I have in DVD Decrypter still stands the best at this point -- unless a genius come up with a new "patch" to work on DVD5 and finds a way to delete a whole bunch of unneccessary stuff i.e. the movie, extras and extras, then I'll be more than happy to follow that process. I've used many methods using Sony's CDVDGEN 1.5, ISO Buster 1.7 Pro, APACHE2(experiment) to work on it and they all failed so far.
So, in the mean time, just keep playing your 88% successful backed up while you can - like I did to mine. Happy burning and playing backed up PS2 games.

@csskiller. What media are you using? Remember, only DVD+Rs will burn using this method. DVD-Rs refuse to overburn at all. Otherwise it's gonna have to be file splitting.

i know it's a long shot but has anyone tried unscrambling the .vol file in linux os?,because of it's simple code(and huge use in the ps2 programming scene) it might be easier to do in linux,i've just been checking up on the net and there are quite a few references to linux/ps2 programming, unfortunately i've never used it but somebody must know of a computer with linux on it(just pulled an old 333mhz out the cupboard, haha, like a big calculator watch!),worth a try for anyone with a bit of linux experience,i'm getting nowhere with ripping out the pss movie files at the mo,but at least we know that most of the movie files(if not all) are on the second layer now.
my old 333's hard drive is 4gb!,can forget using that me thinks

Are you trying to burn to a dual layer or standard dvd5 (4.7gig) disc. I was under the impression that the messiah (depending what version) didnt play the backup dual layer too well. Some people have reported success with certain version (as stated in earlier posts to this forum). Have you tried Alkohols dvd 5 method??? You may have some success with that method as some swap magic people have. Burn the game using DVD Decrypter
on dvd+r single layer disc. There are some guides on this forum and success has been achieved by some. I would suggest you expand a little on what you are having problems with

Thanx for the info on backing up GT4 onto dvd5. I got 88% with DVD Decrypter using Msonic DVD+R media. I patched it with the toxic patch and was unable to change the book setting to dvd-rom(it was burnt with DVD+R book type). But it works so far and thats all I care about. Good luck with the 100% backup to a dvd5, as I don't have the knowledge or patience to attempt such a feat.Again thank you!

thanks for the reply, I think it's bacause I've got the previous version of the Messiah, not the v2 ou v3.6. When I bought it, the DVD's where still something new, so it was a long way back.
Now I've recorded 4 Dual Layered Verbatim DVD+R and no sucess.
I think 'm gonna give it a try on the SL disc, but tell me something, do I have to make any bittsetting?

no..Open DVD Decrypter and ISO>Read...then once it is complete make sure "Burn-Proof" is unchecked and that "volume excess lock" is also unchecked...the ISO>Write...you should get an error telling you that the disk will not hold that amount...just click yes...then it will burn...at about 83%-88% you will get another error ...just click yes...the disk will begin to finalize...an presto you have a backup(minus arcade mode)...Make sure you burn at 1x or the lowest your burner will go...also most success has been done with DVD+R....also before you play the backup make sure you have a previously saved spot on your memory card of gt4...this will help the backup to load...

Sorry to say tho, unless the torrent pirateers can make a dumped game save as well, there will be no DVD-5 on torrent, cos it only works with a saved game.

Heard about a DVD 5/88% GT4 can someone tell me what I need to make one like this? please
I got the orginal and made a full ISO from disc.
From what I read it's the same but minus the arcade part correct?
The full ISO I have won't work right? It has to have the arcade part removed from image correct? then patched then burned?
I've seen some on bit torrent sites (Gran Turismo 4 DVD5) are those's the version that one would need??
Do I still need to patch it with toxic patch even though I'm only burning it to a dvd5?
and once all this is done will it work swap magic 3.3 with v12 ps2?
Also true you have to have saved GT4 files on your memory card to make the game play?

Well... after reading this whole thread I decided to chime in.
You dont need to overburn at 88% or whatever. If all you want to do
is play Sim mode all you have to do is have:
1 Original GT4 GameDisc
1 DVD-R
Im using SwapMagic2.0 and v1 PS2
Make an iso using DVD-Gen and only include the GT4.VOL.
(Sorry, dont remeber if I toxic patched, probably)
(Make the LBAs match the orignal disc, dont know if this matters)
Put in original game go into sim mode.
Save a game at your garage area.
Thats it. When you boot the backup.. it will load right to
that spot. If you wanna make sure this works everytime go into
the mainmenu/Options using the original game and turn off
'show intro movie' and 'demo delay'
Havent tried this with only using the GT4L1.VOL and patching it, maybe
find a swapping point. 2 Disc DVD5 version wouldnt be that bad!
Workin on ripping the .pss files from GT4L1.VOL now..
but dont get your hopes up!

Whats this 88% people talk about?? explain please is 88% the percentage of the whole orginal, so meaning you can fit only 88% of the orginal onto the dvd5 then?
Also when I make a ISO of GT4.VOL. do I patch it then after with toxic patch?
You said also that I need a saved game from the garage in the sim mode, Why do I have to save it from there? can't any game save data work?

thanks

never mind about my questions from earlier I just read most of the threads and got my questionbs answered. sorry about not checking the whole thread first. My only questions left is below.
Someone said also that I need a saved game from the garage in the sim mode, Why do I have to save it from there? can't any game save data work?
and why does the game only work with saved data on the memory card?

You need the save data so the game can boot. with only 88% on the dvd5 the game can't boot to the screen where you can choose to play sim or arcade. With the saved data you are basically showing the ps2 that you want sim mode and it boots right to your garage.

GT4 backed up on DL Media
Got it on first try... very easy actually :)
Basically I first made an .iso image of the original GT4 (I think it's a European version since I live in Europe :P)
I then proceeded to patch the ISO with the Toxic patcher, and then burned the patched ISO onto a Traxdata DVD+R DL, without bitsetting and other stuff, just default settings and my good ol' Pioneer DVR-108 :P
Put the disc in my PS2 and booted up like a charm, works perfectly till now. I haven't tried GT Mode but Arcade works perfectly.
My PS2 is a v7 (39004) and i have a Magic 5 modchip. Hope this helps :)
PS2 v7 with Magic V5
