Techniks that's fine. Decrypter always makes an MDS file. It's just a file to tell decrypter what media it's meant to be using.
Ok guys, I've been getting some Hex editing tutoring from a friend and I'm gonna have a delve into this thing from a completely different angle. I'll let you know what I turn up in due course, but I'm working towards a 100% copy (Hopefully!!).

Alkohol, I am only slightly geeky lol!!!
What the Toxic patch does is to remove the Path check to a second layer. Basically an OTP dual layer disk (Which is what your copied dual layer disk is) is treated as one contiguous layer by the PS2 (Even though it's two layers physically). The Original disk being PTP is treated as two seperate layers. Obviously our 88% disk is only single layer, so the patch is needed to remove the second layer disk check.
Just thought though. You're using Swap magic, I'm using a Modchip. So you'll not be able to see the Toxic logo on loading because it comes up where the Playstation 2 logo appears. Interesting question here peeps.... Does the toxic patch still load when using SM or is it unecessary?

I still think it's difficult for newbies like me to rebuild the game.
It's a pity we don't have one single patch. To compress the game, and burn.

if you put a single layer dvd+/-r in DVD Decrypter says its PTP because of it being single layer and writing from the inside of the disc to the outside of the disc, so maybe alkohol managed to do it without a patch cos the disc check see's it as PTP.

Is it possible for someone thats successfully got it onto one DVD5 Disc to try and release a Rip Kit that you can just run on the ISO and it will do it all its self :)

@steve-000
The guides in this forum are already simple enough. There are a few procedures that may require a little tinkering but really fairly straight forward. Alkohols dvd 5 method is rather simple and is even easier than backing up a dvd movie. If you search back a little further in the thread you will see the settings required in decrypter. As for backing up the game this is standard procedure for nearly any PS2 game. Iso read the game into a folder, set up decrypter as per the settings, add the patch to the backup using the patcher, burn the iso/mds on a dvd+r 4.7 gig disc and wait for it to reach 83-88% you will be given a message at this stage click ok and it will finalise disc. End of Story.....Couldnt be more straight forward really. Check the rest of the thread for specifics. NO one is going to list a dvd 5 rip that you can download (including game ) so you can burn it. That would be piracy. Not that I am saying this is what you want but you will have to do some work on your own.. Other than whats been covered that's all that is needed to burn the image onto dvd5. You do need a game save from the original disc in order for it to boot but small pennies to those who own the original. The image is not 100% completed so you dont get the arcade mode but who cares really....I can play the original for that...The game is not 100% back up playable as yet as we have not figured out how to compress the movies or extract some of the dummy files, this is a somewhat large procedure that takes quite a bit of effort and knowledge, the latter aformentioned abilites held by a small few not including myself. So to all newbies please read the thread, it may seem boring but you will learn something in the process. That's what this thread is all about.

you know you don't really the mds file (unless you want to make dl backup) in the read iso settings in dvd decrytor you can uncheck the setting makes mds files. I Unchecked made my single image then patched it with toxic then winhex it burned it and it work's fine. Even if you need the patch or not if you do patch with and use swap with swap magic and you really didn't need it I don't see it hurting anything if you patched it anyway.

sed8ed - I did not as for a Link to Download the game (If you read my post again you will see that I never said that)... I already have the game but its a damn Hong Kong Silver Pressed version.... I just asked if it would be possible for someone to make a Rip Kit which are perfectly legal.
Whats that stuff I noticed on Page 16 where someone said they successfully made a 100% backup onto a DVD5 Disc or is it not actaully 100%

Ok progress report people. Just to let you know what I'm trying to do.. and hopefully get some help doing it!!
I've taken a rip of the original and patched it with toxic patch. I used apache to extract GT4L1.VOL from layer-1. Then I used darthi8nt's extractor to get the movies.
What I want to try and do is use winhex to find the large movies in the ISO image (Successfully so far), and either truncate them by as many lines of code as possible, or replace them with the hex code of a dummy file. I feel a little out of my depth here but I think this is a real possibility and I really want to pursue this as far as I can.
Any ideas?

Successfully got a dvd5 working! Only used 1 dvd+r!
I put it on my hdd, toxic patched it, opened up dvd decryptor and burned it not messing with any settings, when done, put in original and turned off intro movie and saved it at the home screen and my dvd 5 works!
Thanks for all the help guys, we beat Sony's sorry ass!

Anyone who wants to make the 88% version needs to read back to page 10 and onwards. Remember though, you need to patch with the Toxic DL patch before you write the ISO to disk and you need to use DVD+R for alkahols method to work. You also need a save from your original game on your mem card. However if my plan goes as successfully as it has so far, expect a better solution soon. WATCH THIS SPACE.....

We got the DVD5 100% now why are you still talking like there a huge breakthrough were waiting for? They have the real DL backup and now us swap magic user's are pretty much taken care of. By the way I'm not trying to sound smart or anything like that either. But I got my 100% DVD5 backup now and probably never going to look at this thread again, I'm moving on now to other game backups. thanks to all that got this done for us and the hard work you put in.

so you seem to think so far :)
i can almost guarantee you'll be back with an issue for the swap magic. to get a 100% the game needs to be tested for all levels, what level did i hear about not working,or was it one level that has been tested successfully arcade mode.need i say more.

I'm actually heading for 100% complete DVD-5 (Assuming there's no further disk checks to hinder my progress) including downsampled movies and NO MISSING BITS. My first attempt at hex editing involved simply chopping a bit off the end of each of the big movies but unfortunately this caused the game to freeze after autoload (Running the movies in my Media player classic later on revealed a couple of errors so I'm assuming that this, together with the sound file not matching was to blame for the freeze).
This hex editing lark has got me hooked. It's right down to the nitty-gritty and it's fantastic fun! I've also discovered that they used TMPGEnc to encode the movies.. I'll be using this myself to downsample them. Hopefully when I replace the original PSS files with the downsampled versions, all the files should link properly. As I said.... Hopefully.

By the way, I forgot to mention. I'm working with Winhex on the ISO FILE DIRECTLY. So if by some miracle I am successful in my mission, the means to the end should be relatively straightforward and using the minimum of software.

see :) the old school way is still the best way.( as i suggested a few pages back on a couple of occassions)wouldn't you agree? glad to see you're keeping on AND making progress, but don't forget to use extra tools like PPF patching and IML2ISO.you probably are well aware of all this now that your heading in the right direction.

@Samuels. Thanks for the encouragement. This really is down-and-dirty stuff here. Binary level editing on an ISO file appears a daunting task at first, but it's surprisingly simple when you get used to it.
Once I've got movies downsized (Using 3 different progs to do this), I'm simply going to use the hex editor to replace the originals with the downsized ones. No further patching, or rebuilding needed. The files should link OK but as I said before, hopefully there's no other disk checks other than the path check that Toxic addresses.

Ok, I used Alkohol's method and it seemed to work but I can only get as far as the GT Logo with the spinning white tach, then the tach turns red and keeps spinning, and that's as far as she goes.My save game is not from the garage though it's just an autosave, could that be the Problem?

Yep you need a save at the garage or it won't get past gt4 logo. Also there is no main menu, you go straight into gt mode.
