Hello first of all to everyone. I am a newbie to your site and I look forward to sharing some interesting discussions here. My question is about the Taiyo Yuden 16x DVD-R. I am expecting my first shipment of DVDs (which happen to be Taiyo Yuden 16x DVD-Rs) from Meritline.com for my new NEC-3520A drive I purchased. I have taken the liberty to contact Meritline and ask for verification of the validity of the Taiyo Yudens and make sure they are the true brand. We discussed about the fact thatthey are TY fakes on the market and she assured me that they are the real deals. I will verify personally when they come in tomorrow and let everyone here know so that you can feel confident ordering from them and you not get stuck with fakes.
Anyway, my question is what should I be expecting to see (code-wise) when I perform a check to test the validity of my new Taiyo Yuden DVD-R 16x? Would they be different than the codes for the 8x's? Thanks you all for this AWESOME site and to all who can answer these questions.

Great.....Thanks for the quick response kivory666. I will certainly let you all know what I came up with. This is my first DVD burner and I'm very new to this arena of computing but I am a very quick learner and I hope to be on a more even keel with you are shortly.. LOL I have used this software to rip the DVD to an .ISO image file so that when the blanks come in, I will be able to burn straight from the image. I love the simplicity of this software and when I have tested the image file and viewed the movie after ripping, the quality was perfect to that of the DVD source. I was curious if anyone here has had any experience with DVD Copy Tools 3.5.3.0. I think it does an awesome job and it relatively fast for the ripping. Check it out for those who have not tried it.

@ msudawg:I hope you enjoy your Nec 3520.. I've had mine for one month now and it is super!

@ kivory666: By the way, I have some Verbatim 16X +Rs in route. Will they code out as TYG03?

creaky....I see that if you run the scan again, the results are a little different. Actually after performing another PI scan on the same disc that I showed earlier, the results showed even better results. How come? Also what actually does PIs and PIFs tell you?

Here is a scan I have done on a disc my cousin had burned for me. You can easily see the difference between my TYs and his media. I would have to assume here that my new 16x TYs are authentic.

Well...I am quite pleased so far and I have to pass this info to everyone here. I purchsed these 16x TY DVD-R 50 pack at Meritline.com for $27.99 + $6.82 S/H and they would appear to be authentic so you guys can order likewise with confidence that you are getting quality media at a good price.

been tied up at work, haven't had a chance to reply~ :)

seems that i have been betrayed myself, those are FAKE TYg03s with that media ID...if purchased from meritline, i would suggest getting a refund/ dispute the order and have them send you REAL TYs.

i've had quite a bit of experience with authentic TYs and from the code you gave creaky, i noticed the newer 16x TYs have longer numbers after the GD, just look for the GDxxxxxxxxxxx or GGxxxxxxxxxx or even TGxxxxxxxxxx on the inner hub, you are fine~

@LABOY sorry, the 16x Verbs dvd+r will NOT code out as TYG03s (as TY coding is exclusively for Taiyo Yuden, those Verbs will most likely code out as MCC.....004 which is just an indication of the next step up from my famed MCC003 which are the 8x dvd+r variety that i use regularly~)

so, in conclusion, I GOT SCAMMED AS WELL AS YOU MSUDAWG, i have looked at some of my 16x TY and they have almost identical numbers around the inner hub~ MEANING, i got FAKES too :(

i get different readings on my scans too when i use different drives to perform the tests, the discrepency is always slight, but they are a little different when run on different burners~ :) i am no expert in the PI/PIF error scan readings, but, it's nothing to be worried about for me, different lasers on different dvd drives will give different outputs/results~ :)

good luck and keep em' burning w/ your new 16x TYs..they are great media indeed~ :)

kivory666...I really appreciate you for looking up that info and finding out about the validity of my TYs. Yes, it certainly does give me that warm feeling having possession of certified, quality media in your hands. I even (just for kicks) burned this TY 16x -R disc at 2x and I wanted to share the PI scan results.....

I do have another question...What determines whether a burned DVD-R or DVD+R plays on a DVD player standalone? I have a new Sony SLV-D251P and an older Apex DVD player. All my new TYs play on the older Apex but doesn't even load on the new Sony. What gives? Does it have anything to do with the regions? Is there anything I might be missing on a setting before I burn? I use DVD Copy Tools to rip and burn unless I rip to an image file, then I burn using Nero (latest version).

kivory666 and creaky, I enjoyed talking to you both and look forward to further discussions... Thanks again kivory666 for the info.

anytime MSU,

it's just a preference for some of the newer players, i have found that my cheapest standalones will play ANYTHING i throw at them, while my $2,000 high end Denon's are VERY picky...won't play anything but pressed dvds or if i booktype my QUALITY dvd+r to dvd-rom~ then it plays. :P

so, i take it your NEW Sony is like that too~ all i can really suggest is that if your burner allows it, to booktype the dvd+r to dvd-rom, it MIGHT play it then...for more info on that...ask mort81, he's THE expert on booktyping~ :P

feel free to come w/ any more questions, MEDIA is obviously not the case if you have any more problems, THAT we know~ :) good luck~

Hi there, could some kind soul please tell me where I can get hold of genuine 16x Taiyo Yuden in the UK? Its just that I wish to backup a lot of important data [I am writing a book, plus family photos etc] and want to use the best media around [which I believe to be TY, though may be mistaken ^^].

Thanks for reading my small request ^^.
