@LABOY

Thanks for the quick reply. I wasn't particularly looking for speed, although more speed is good. Just found out yesterday that my stand alone Toshiba (bought from Costco about 3 months ago) would only play -R's. This really surprised me. Fortunately, all of my burns but 1 have been on -R's.

Here I am. My thoughts are that if are satisfied with the firmware you have then keep it. I have many different drives, the two NEC drives I have are the 3520 and the 3540. I use hacked firmware on the 3520 because it removes the riplock and I can read a pressed disc at much faster speeds. The bitsetting is also an advantage, like Laboy said it will make your + discs compatibility better when set to DVD-Rom. As for the writing stratagies, it all depends what media you are using. If you are using 1st Class media like Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim it won't give that much of an advantage. But if you use some 4x media it will allow you to overspeed it to 8x or 12x with good results. As with flashing all firmware you have to beware that you are confident in doing it properly. You can render your drive inoperable with a bad flash, so do it at your own risk. If I can be of any help do not hesitate to ask.

Hello everyone... newbie to the forum.

I've read all the posts. Now if someone could just humor me here, I'd appreciate it.

I too have just ordered a 50 pack of TY 16x from Meritline. As soon as I get home from work, I'll be able to check them out.

(Incedentally, MSUDawg, I have a setup identical to yours, with the exception of 2 Pioneer 109 burners.)

Can someone just tell me definitively how to tell if I've gotten fakes? I'll check the media Id and such with either DVDD or DvdInfo, but the "code around the spindle" thing has me a bit confused... which codes on these 16xs indicate LEGIT and which indicate FAKE?

I appreciate any help here for a forum newbie... :)

After getting burned too many times buying rebranded disks (even Fujifilm sold me Prodiscs--a brand I've been told is not top tier), I decided to start buying them directly off the Net.

A little outfit out of California called supermediastore.com. They have great prices and, living in Nevada, I usually get my shipments next day and only have to pay UPS ground rate. Pretty good deal. :o) My Plextor 716SA burns the 8x Taiyos at 16x speed. A nice bonus.

The Plex is highly recommended, both by reviewers and customers. I couldn't be happier. They've designed it so that by mere firmware upgrades, they've increased the DL burning speed to 6x, as well as adding -R DL support and increasing the number of brands that can be burned at speeds faster than the manufacturer's rated one.

As for these "benchmark" tests...they are so dependent on the PC's hardware they are basically meaningless. If you do your test on our your PIII 800 with 384MBs of RAM and I do mine on my P4HT 2.8GHz with an 800MHz FSB and 1.5GBs of memory, I'm obviously going to get a faster result. They're a waster of time unless the machines are "apple-to-apple" comparions, not just the media.

My primary set-top is a five disc Sony changer which has no problem with any format. Unlike my Magnavox, however, the Sony will not read DVDs with MP3s on them. But with a five disk changer, its not that big a deal. With MP3 CDs I can still put 25 hours of music into the machine and let it roll.

I've had stellar results from both 8x & 16x, + and - formats Taiyos. I recommend them to everyone who asks. I also use Verbatims which, unilke the Taiyos, have produced a few coasters. But nothing like CMC's failure rates.

Speaking of CMC, I had a 50% failure rate from a 10 pack of Memorex disguised CMCs. WARNING to newbies: AVOID Memorex CDRWs and DVD +/-Rs. I can't speak to their CD-Rs and their DVD+/-RWs seem to be Ricoh which is an excellent brand. But who knows when they'll drop Ricoh. Best advice is to stay away.

DVDInfoPro, VSO Inspector and Nero Tools read them as: TYG03.

There are two lines of alpha numberic characters on the disks:

GH00073 & JM42D05336GH

Given that three identification tools from separate developers all id the disks as Taiyos I'm confident they aren't fakes. I also like the fact Taiyo doesn't clutter up the writing surface with logos and other impediments. Fuji's rebranded Taiyo's leave almost no room at all for writing down the contents. And when you're backing up a disc from a TV boxed set that leave little room for writing down episode names.

(As for $2000, Denon's...I don't mean to impugn anyone on this site, but one sees these claims so MANY times on so MANY chat boards, one begins to take them with a grain of salt. "Movie X sounded just awful on my $20,000 system..." Sure, PAL. Probably the profits from your investment in that bridge in Brooklyn, right? Or that killing you made in Everglades real estate, right? Made a bundle myself. That swamp land, can't beat it for investing. :o] Besides, excellent set-tops are available for sub-$200, so there's no reason to pay 10 times that much. Unless, of course, one enjoys wasting money. There are people, in a different tax bracket than moi, who do enjoy this.

My Sony 5-disc changer even allows me to hear DTS even thought my surround system receiver doesn't have the decoder. All three of my previous set-tops had DTS, but I wasn't able to hear it. Way to go, Sony!

Received my Taiyo Yuden 16X 50 pack from Meritline. All seems to be well and legit! The spindle code reads GH000073, and the media ID comes up as TYG03... 2 burns so far, both flawless. I've only burned them at 12X however, as I was not ready to push it just yet... :)

I want to say that this thread has been both informative and interesting but I have moved on to so many others threads I really don't have the time to monitor them all so I am moving on. See you all on another thread ( I know Creaky, Kivory666, and Laboy will find me.)

Holy freikin' cow!!! It's been a little while since I have been on the site and when I come back on, I see the info that my TY's are FAKES!!! WTH!!! Unbelievable!!!

@ kivory666, please PM me with a little info on your findings as to what told you that my TY's are fake please.

@ everyone, my apologies for all the people that purchased some of the TY's from meritline.com per my recommendation. I hope that I can get to the bottom of this and maybe even, once confirmed, I will have a slight chat with meritline and see if there are any options available to me. I am in total shock about this whole mess. I mean, so far, I haven't had any coasters to date and all but one test result (out of 20+ burns) with DVDInfo Pro, come back with descently good PI/PO numbers.

@ Aland, thank you for double checking the codes and bringing all of this to our attention. I was about to order some more from meritline as well before reading this today.

@ creaky....hi there...LOL!!! Just didn't want to leave you out now :P....

MSUDawg -- I now live in VA. Been here since 1981 (govt.) but I still have family in H'burg & McComb. Small world. Your dawgs have really improved in basketball and I think you guys got a pretty fair football coach with Crooms. Time will tell.

Hi creaky...It's been a while huh? Yeah, k666 stil hasn't responded back to me (private PM or otherwise about the TYs. I am still in sorta shock over this mess but I would like some info before I continue with meritline.

@ tsquare43...Yeah MSU have picked it up in basketball, Croom has his hands full but things can ONLY get better in football 'cause I couldn't see things getting much worse for the football program than what they have already been during the last 4 years.

Well, I ended up buying 300 8x Taiyo Yuden discs along with another 100 Ritek G05 dye dvdrs [as I have found them to be very reliable].

First off, Taiyo Yudens packaging sucks! All 3 of my 100 spindles had the foam separator at the bottom, leaving the discs stored at a crooked angle during transit from their factory, to their distro, all the way to SVP then back to me, frankly I was disgusted.

Secondly, the surface of the media looks very nice indeed, but the sides of the media look no different from cheapass discs. I used some Phillips DVDR media a while back which are less than half the cost of Taiyo Yuden, but look no different from a commercial dvd movie disc - perfectly edged . I was expecting the same from the much lauded TY, but to no avail. These really look terrible, which brings me to my last point -

Are they genuine?

Here are the codes from the first disc:

GG000103

2070? could be 5010 written vertically around the centre base

AB5Y4A202000GG

If any of the illuminati could see their way into verifying whether they are genuine, I would be extremely grateful, and will then move them into Ritek cases where they will be much more comfortable ; ]

Thanks again to all the kind people who have helped me out!

@MSUDawg - kivory666 will probably be around here somewhere. i'm only just catching up on a few posts as i spent a couple hours in the car as i was on way to stay with my folks for the weekend. it's kinda wierd when people ask for me on a forum, i guess i'm not used to people noticing what i type lol!.

@kotsu - svp's packaging could definitely be better, however i have been party to their incredibly efficient returns service so no worries there. (plus they even pickup stuff off you at their cost!).
As to the sides or edges of the TY discs, mine are like that also. However they have the same sort of codes on the hub (GG000107 i think) and any i've watched have been flawless so as far as i know they're the real deal.

If, God forbid they were not the real thing (i'm definitely not saying that they're fake), i'm sure svp would be fine about refunding them. I do prefer my Verb's but that's because of the matte surface, better surface for the kids' little fingers.

Hi Creaky, well the packaging is really down to TY not SVP, and I must say that this time, the packaging by SVP was brilliant, lots of airbags, no loose items whatsoever.

If your discs are the same, then all I can say is, TY could learn a thing or two from Phillips, and their discs are made in India to boot.

I hope you have a great time with your family!

just trying to keep informed and to know what's what! I like getting into it, like I know others do, too! I like to go into the DVD structure and take out unwanted things by hand instead of using an easy program like CloneDVD (no knock on this program---just want to do it myself). I like DVDRemake that goes into the structure then export the new DVD structure and let DVDRebuilder with CCE make it into a DVD5 to fit on disk with the best quality you can get! so when you say Science lessons.... I guess.... it's a science alright! my hobby.... I like it!
