I just got my BenQ DW1640 installed today and boy was I surprised to find that ALL of my Ritek G04 Inkjet Printables that I have burned about 80% of my almost 500 movies on have horrible quality scans. I checked several TDK's and several TY-r and the scans all range in the 95-98%. Every single Ritek, some as old as 16 months old and some as new as 6 months old all have ZERO quality.
I have read the whole thread now and noticed someone else who had the seemingly same problem with the Ritek G04 and was trying to narrow it down to whether it was just the printable ones.. anyone else have any info on this? They still read on our 2 dvd players fine, just horrible scan qualities.
Oh yeah, and I did flash to the newest firmware available at the times of burning.
The TY-R I burned today on my new BenQ = 98% on the quality test as well :)
It's funny.. the whole time I was thinking the Riteks were so much better than TDK.. haha, what a joke. The oldest TDK's (TTG02) are now around 16 months old as well and they are doing just fine with 95% quality tests.
WTG Ritek, you suck :(

@Slayer912
Welcome to AfterDawn. May I suggest you burn them at 4X only. However, if you insisted, then feel free to burn them at 8X, but don't go beyond that (8X) though cause once you scanned them you're know exactly what I mean.
Yep, Taiyo Yuden sure is ROCKIN' and standing strong. I'll be scanning some of my newly backed up discs (movies) and will post them up once it's completed.

@Slayer912 hi :)
this scan thing is getting a little out of hand in "MY" opinion
Quote: They still read on our 2 players fine. Just horrible scans
Burn and Play is my way of telling if their ok
now you have had the Scan Scare, i take it that you are now going to bin them all (why they play fine?)
Quote: Ritek, you suck
again why that statement? they still play fine
i don't want to get into a flame war (that's not my intent)this is only "MY" personal opinion :)
i have found that scans come out different on the same disc with Nero and then Kprobe
they are great as a guide and if they make you feel good ok. i'll stick with my Burn and Play

First off, thanks for the welcome :)
Well, I won't be binning them until I come accross ones that don't play, skip alot, etc. It's almost weird.. I had never had a problem with any of the Riteks skipping or anything.. I put on a Ritek backed up movie tonight and lo and behold, it froze at one point in the movie for about 10 seconds.

i'm definitely with gurnard. i've experimented with the quality scanning, just to understand the lingo. However for me it comes down to CRC errors (corruption), plain and simple. A disc either plays or doesn't, and re-copies or it doesn't. But consistent results are key here, ie for many 100s of disks. I understand why ppl go for quality scanning, it's just not bag, that's all :)

me too, i learned through here and members experience... i scan maybe 50% of my back ups and every single one my dad does for me (cuz he's still a noob) but will soon be a burnin mofo. my sister and i pitched in and bought him a new pc with a dvd rom and burner, so now he can play and backup at the same time..
i only use ritek G05 (printable's from newegg), verbs and ty's... faithfully !!!

hi guy's :)
i think i posted the 1 and only scan i've done deliberately on page 4, of a G04 burned in early march. didn't know what i was looking at really (but the Scan Man (Alkohol) did ) and didn't say anything nasty about it ,so i assume it looked ok :)
after what Slayer912 said after my comments and my devil quote. i don't think i'll scan anymore of them.
as some here know i've burned several 1000 RitekG04...G05 and currently R03.
my own collection i'm not to bothered about because i can always reburn any that go bad
my main concern as always, is my customers who mumble, and to be honest i feel the amount of returns are within my acceptance level (you notice i don't claim 100% success) lol
@creaky hi :)
just ordered another 100 Verb/Ty's (well impressed)
i'll shut up now, i've said more in these couple of posts than i do in a year
happy burning and have a really good new year :)

gurnanrd,
I think you are right. We can get too carried away with scanning. I don't scan all my discs, i just do it when i think something might have gone wrong in the burn process, or if i am doing some experiment. The best test is if the movie plays back fine for you, on your players. Who cares if they don't play on Mr. Smith's player down the street? It's not science, but it is the best test, the one that matters, the test of real life. Some things can be broken down to almost science:
burn at 4x for best chance of success and quality
use good media
have plenty of memory and dont multi-task while burning.
sounds simple, but it works.
As far as firmware flashing, i just updated my lite-on from BSOS to BSOY. Make sure you wait until it says the update is complete. I almost started messing with mine, as it said progress %100 complete but just sat there for a couple of minutes before the "firmware update complete" message poped up. Sure glad i waited. Most firmware updates are a piece of cake, unless you get impatient.. :)

i guess i am irregular then !! too much time on my hands.
i just got an e-mail from my wife, told me (i let my wife's co-worker borrow stealth) and it got to about 4 minutes and goes back to the menu........ it played fine for me, you know, cuz i tested it too. burned on a ritek G05 (i know, cuz i printed on the disk). i'll get it back tonight and give it a test in my player, see whats going on...
i bet it's her player that don't like the media.

Hi mate, i know you're the only person that can really answer this for me.
Have a look at this:
This is a Tuff Disk after a failed attempt to burn NFSMW PS2 game. But got 93%!!I have another one done on a Maxell (got 64% - i can glue that one in if you want) and another one on a Verbatim ('no comments' - 0%) (Done the three in a row in that order when i thought my problem was the media)
None of them work.
How come the good media get bad results and bad (awfull, really sh@te) media get good 'uns?
I mean, i know that if i scan on my other Verb's i will get good results (between 93 and 95%), but what bugs me is that so far ALL of my sh@te, made in car boot sale, £20 for 100 Tuff Disk DVD-R's got between 93 and 95%!!
What do you think?
See you around Buddy...

don't run a 'quick scan'... run the full scan, you can't tell really too much with those results.. and looking at how much you are burning, 3526mb... your burning waaaaaaay too close to the edge there..
take it more to like 3400mb (me personally, i set mine top 3460mb)

I usually limit my size to 4300 MB, so I don't think that 3400 Would be any where close to the edge. I think you are transposing the numbers. Results will probably be worse with a normal scan. I do a quick scan on all of mine after burning as just a general check, but they're liable to test much worse with a normal scan since the quick scan does a very spotty check

my wife's toshiba player has the SAME ISSUE...lol, my Ritek GO5s play PERFECTLY on all 4 of my home stand alones, yet, they stop and goes back to the menu on my wife's home standalone...go figure??
guess it's just a matter of WHAT will play on WHO's particular standalone at this point...
scanning for disc quality is kool and all in fun/science, but, i rarely do scans unless there IS A NOTICEABLE problem with a particular disc... i PERSONALLY don't put all that much weight on scanning tests, often times it REALLY depends on which drive you used to scan it...there will be DISCREPENCIES as i have found when i do ANY SORT of scanning on my Pioneer drives~ :P i'm sure there are other drives that have this sort of "problem" too that i have~ :)

i got that disk back, played it all the way through, not a single problem, stuck in my portable, played just fine, tried it in the PS2, perfect, then, my old POS jvc player....... played like a dream.
anyway, i re-copied it, this time, book-typed to dvd-rom and crossed fingers...... if it dont play for her this time, i'm going to tell her to buy another player........ beggers cant be choosers, after all, i did this for my wife's co worker out of the kindness of my heart.
i cant even get a hold of this woman to ask her what player she has anyway. well, i guess i will finf out the results tomorrow.

oh well, at least i know they work for me, that's all i really care about anyway..

Like my buddy gear79 said, if you want to have the most precise results then turn off "quick scan" and rescan it again. Not bad for an everage/ordinary TDK media (TTG01).
@Doc. creaky, gear79, maxburn & gurnard
How's the posse doing? Hope y'all have a wonderful Christmas. Anyways, I didn't asked for Santa, but I guess Santa (the wife) was smart enough and got me 3 spindles of the 50 discs 8X FUJI DVD+R (MIJ) and 2 spindles of 25 discs 16X VERBS "advanced azo". I recalled I didn't told her anything, but I did mentioned something like "verbs and fuji DVD+Rs" about a month or so ago.
Now I've got about 200 YUDEN000T02 left, plus 65 Verbs as well. Looks like I need to crank up my burning specialty, so I can try out the new YUDEN000T03 once it's out at Best Buy.
Happy Holidays!!!
Oh and I almost forgot; "Tai-yo Yu-den ROCK!!" hehehe

Now that is one smart wife, she knows how to keep you out of trouble, lol. My wife went the other route, no disks just a new burner, she got me a Plextor 740a, which is not a Plextor. Burns good but had to try 3 programs to get it to booktype. DVD InfoPro does the job. PlexTools won't even look at it, and although it is supposed to be a rebadged BenQ, their booktype utility won't work. She was so thrilled about giving it to me, haven't the heart to take it back.
