The only thing I've burned in the last several momths at 4X were some crappy Ritek G05s. If I tried to burn them at 8X on any of my burners they would come out blemished and wouldn't play. It sort of looked like the recording surface had started to melt. Whatever it was I don't buy them any more.

@forkndave

well, we all have our own preferences on particular discs :) seems like you got a "bad batch" of those RitekG05s...i've had quite a bit of success with mine, but once again, that's only ME...

just gotta use what works well for you...if the Taiyo Yudens & Verbs have been working good for you, then simply stick with them...i am not going to try to revitalize a dead horse in convincing you to "give the RitekG05s another try"..hehe...if they will not burn @8x with successful results, then drop them and don't buy them again...use what DOES work for you and happy burning...

The main reason that I won't buy Riteks again is that every printable ritek G04 or G05 I have has gone bad after 6 months or so. It only seems to happen with -R and only the printable ones. I have old Prodisc S03 printable that are a couple of years old and they still produce acceptable scans. Here is an example of a G05 that was only 3 months old when scanned. It was not like this when burned. I think it has something to do with their excellent printing surface. I don't know if the ink is somehow doing it or what. I don't have this problem with Verbatim, TY or the MIJ Maxells or actually most other brands.

Dave

This is typical and not an exception. If you have an old Ritek with a picture printed on it, try scanning it. I'm not the only person experiencing this. I've seen reviews on either meritline.com or supermediastore.com where people have complained about this very thing.

Here is why I say that a Lite-On is a better reader than BenQ. This is the same DVD that I scanned earlier with my BenQ. It was an excellent scan, but this one is excellenter (I just invented that word). This was scanned at 4X using K Probe. The peak PIF is 2 which would have meant a quality score of 95, but look at the total PIF. I know the BenQ scanned at 8X, but it really doesn't make much difference to scan at 4X with it. I consider my BenQ to be a much better burner than my Lite-On, but I never use it to rip with. Also the hacked firmware I have in the Lite-On lets it rip at up to 16X with some discs.

lastly, @gear...if i don't keep you up to date w/ ur firmware who will? LOL
i've been on top of my burners firmware since i knew it was outdated, after all, this new update just came out like on the 27th of dec.
lol..

have you done the f/w update yet and tested?
i am looking for the changelog on what it does and PM'ed Maxburn on it too, in his sig, he has it, just waiting on a response.

@ forkndave....... damn, i have the same ritek G05 -dvd printables, so far mine have been fine, but then again, the burns are still less then a month old. i'll have to keep in mind what you post says plus the scan page and let you know my results !!

I feel the same way. I also use my litey to rip 99% of the time.

@kivory,

I'm glad you informed us of a f/w update for your litey. Although I use modified f/w with my litey 1633 making it a 1653 and led fix, there was also an update available for it also.

Happy new year to everybody.

@forkndave,

while i totally believe that all your Ritek printable's turn out with poor quality scans, i don't use Ritek printables, so i have nothing to compare to yours with~ :)

the degredation over a 6 months period on those Ritek printables is weird...i'm sure you, among others, that complain about the Ritek printables are very much correct in your testing and results...i just don't have any Ritek printables in the dash format to see for myself (don't have ANY Ritek in the plus format at all~ :), printable or not)

i also use my Litey to RIP all my movies, i never rip w/ my Benq, as i also agree with your point that the Liteon is much faster ripper and the Benq is a better burner~ :0

@gear & mort,

while i am USUALLY pretty up to date with the latest firmwares on a weekly basis, this holiday season has been hectic for me...hence, my tardiness of finding this one a week late~ :)

better late than never...as to the 1653 cross-flashed...yeah, guess Liteon updates firmware for MOST of their various drives on the same day~ :0

i haven't tested the new firmware on the 1633S yet...will get around to that next week...been a SLOW week for me in terms of burning, only did about 30 this week LOL

docTY~

happy new year to all

Wow that's a ton of info. Thanks for the 8th time lol. ForknDave, I was in no way doubting you, I just wanted the consensus opinion of all the experts. Look at the turn out. So while were on the subject, does the quick scan feature in Nero CD/DVD speed really make a difference? I've read that it does, but in my very limited scans, it doesn't seem to make a huge difference if I use the quick scan or the full scan. The quality scores were the same in a couple instances, and the biggest differential I ever saw was 3 for my copy of NCAA Football 2006. It was an 84 with the quick scan and 81 with the full scan. I'll replace the batteries in my digital camera and post some pics when I get a chance. In the meantime, I know Alkohol, Doc, ForknDave, and Mort81 have opinions on the subject. Have at it fellas lol.

I use the quick scan on all my burns as a quick check. It can miss big spots on the disc, however. I have had discs with a 99 score using the quick scan and maybe a 91 using the full scan. The quick scan checks the disc at several points on the disc but you can have a big spike that it might miss. I know that I have. If I see a part of the disc with sort of high spikes I'll run a full scan on that portion of the disc. If it turns up out of specs I throw it away and burn another one. I've found that discs with fairly high PIF will sometimes play OK, but I figure that they're not going to get any better with the passage of time. My TY that I have now cost me about $.42 ea and if I need to throw one away I will. I don't believe I've had to on any TY. I do get an occaisional sub standard burn on a Verb, but not very often. I like TY better, but I can buy printable Verbatim locally and TY I have to order. Sometimes I use printable MIJ Maxell which I can get at Walmart but they're a little over $.60 each. I guess I'm going to have to check out Office Depot's prices. Incidentally, I throw away discs that have a quality score of less than 90.

Cool that's good to know. I'll run full scans on anything that seems a little laggy. I used to burn with a bunch of things running. My computer has a gig of PC 2700 RAM, so I can pull it off. But it definitely affected the quality of my burns. Since I have started shutting down everything while burning, I haven't had a quality score below 95. That's the power of the TYG02's baby lol. Yeah I prefer TY's to Verb's for DVD-5 media. I use Verb's for DVD-9 media, because you can get em at Wal-Mart for the only slightly break neck price of $4 per disc. I'm sure they're cheaper online. It's a little too expensive to burn to DVD-9 discs all the time, I think I need to figure out DVD Shrink.

gear79,

I use codeguys f/w and you can find the 1633@1653 with led fix f/w here http://codeguys.rpc1.org/firmwares.html Look under lite-on SOHW-1653S and dl this one ? CS0R - patched - crossflashing, multi-colored LED (for 1213S, 1613S, 1633S, etc.)

It is a .rar so you will need to uncompress it with WinRAR or similiar.

@gear

actually, as i had mentioned earlier in my previous post, i have downloaded and installed the new firmware for the 1633S, but, will not have time to "test it" until next week...

but, there was no changelog included in the firmware i flashed my 1633S with, the ONLY thing i know is that liteon's taiwanese based website states it's only an improvement in that this new BSOY "match more media"...the same description with a slightly indirect translation from chinese into english, but pretty much the same thing (yes, i'm 1/2 taiwanese and speak it fluently, so i can translate the asian languages with ease into english) :)

i've noticed, that even in the past, Liteon's firmwares are NOT very descriptive in what the actual changes are...it's next near impossible to find an accurate "changelog" for their firmwares...the leave it very vague and up to the imagination...

i'll let you know next week how my burns are after running a few tests, been having a very tough time w/ my warranty for my Samsung widescreen TV and the fools @ Warrantech are being VERY shady...lazy a$$ MF's~! :)

if an expedited reply is needed, i'm sure if you cross-flash the 1633 to the 1653 as mort pointed out, you might be on your way... :) (i'm sure mort will be testing out his new firmware before i will this week)

good luck to you and mort81...let me know how the cross-flashed firmwares work out for you guys...

Okay I'll bite, what's the main advantage to using hacked firmware? Obviously it will perform certain functions the official firmware will not, but is it really worth worrying about? I am using Firmware 1D for my Sony DRU-810A, the most current release. Is there any point in flashing it with hacked firmware, if there's any available? I'm quite happy with the performance of my burner, but there's always room for improvement. So what do the experts think? Thanks.

I don't know of any modified or hacked f/w for your DRU-810.

The reason I flashed my litey 1633 with hacked f/w is because the firmware upgrades it to the later upgraded model which was the 1653. It also changes the led colors back to green for read and red for write which is the way lite-ons used to be before they merged with sony. Prior to the flash with modified f/w the led was green for read and blinking green for write which is the "sony way". 1653 is the latest model I can flash to. I can not crossflash to a 1673 or 1693.

Another interesting point is that all litey models after the 1653 (1673,1693), the led is the sony way and can not be changed due to the fact that they went to a green led only instead of a multi-color led like on previous models.

hacked firmware will usually only give the user some of the formerly "locked" features of a drive out of the box...if you are very happy with your firmware and your drive capabilities now, i would NOT suggest you cross-flashing your drive with hacked firmware...

the only firmwares that i use now that are hacked are for my NEC drives and my Pioneer drives, one is to enable the booktyping feature and the other is to increase rip speeds as well as be able to booktype dvd+r/dvd+r DL to dvd-rom (most people that own Pioneer drives KNOW that using official firmware, booktyping CAN NOT be achieved...while this is important to some and not to others, for ME, i am ALL about booktyping ALL my dvd+r/dvd+r DL media for better compatibility in standalone players) :)

so, basically, if you feel you want to extract MORE FEATURES out of your drive currently, whether it's an increase in burn/rip speed, bitsetting capabililities, pretty flashing lights (as in the case with the 1633s cross-flashed to 1653), or you want to take advantage of possibly "better" firwmare that is available on a DIFFERENT drive to use with your current drive...those would be the ONLY reasons i would suggest you using hacked firmware... :)

if you feel like "living dangerously" as some of us do in regards to drives and firmware...good luck to ya~ as you SHOULD already know, once cross-flashed and if you have problems/issues...you are pretty much stuck if you FRY your drive on accident with an improper flash, as the warranty is definitely NULL and VOID upon such flashing~ :)

it's really up to the user, in this case, YOU...you can always "tweak" more performance benefits out of your drive with hacked firmware, it's available on SOME drives...and some others, it is not...you'll have to do some research as to what hacked firmwares are available for YOUR drive and whether or not it's beneficial to you or just not worth your time....

docTY~

p.s. ur welcome gear, we can compare "notes" as to how it works for both of us later next week~ :)

If for any reason I ever want to flash my 1633@1653 back to 1633 f/w I could do it with a utility called omnipatcher but is much more involved than the initial crossflash from 1633 to 1653. I doubt I will ever flash it back since it is a much better drive now with 1653 f/w, especially for burning, than it was with 1633 f/w.

hi mort~ :)

if the 1653 flashing works well for it, i wish you continued success... i have not gone as far as crossflashing my 1633S, but might consider it in the future...reason being, i have not had ANY problems burning with it over the last year or so...and this is with OFFICIAL firmware (it's on my 2nd computer, so it doesn't get used as much as my other drives) :)

but, something i will consider later on...if it works well for you, i might just have to try it myself in the future~ :)

happy new year buddy...burn on...

I had a TDK burner (I don't remember the exact model). It worked fairly well but would only burn +R. I put it my son's computer and one day I found out that it was a rebadged NEC of some sort. I downloaded a crossflash firmware and killed it dead. So then I removed my Pioneer 107D and put it in my kid's computer. He got an upgrade out of this. Right now, since I've got 4 burners, I'm sort of fearless about different firmware. I put hacked firmware in my Lite-On 1693 and I believe it burns slightly better. It will rip DVD-R and +R (I think) at up to 16X now. I haven't really checked on pressed discs. I was pretty surprized when I saw 16.1X in DVD Decrypter once.

Thanks for all the info. I'm pretty happy with my FW and am definitely not in the habit of living dangerously when it comes to DVD Burning. Here's another question for you guys to mull over. I'm trying to back up a very scratched copy of Deadwood season one on DVD. I am using Alcohol 120% as it works great with scratched PS2 games. DVD Decrypter is very picky about scratched discs for me. Perhaps that is the BenQ rebadge rearing it's ugly head. I remember a couple of you guys saying your Litey's were better readers than your BenQ's. What program do you recommend for horribly scratched discs? Furthermore, a couple times I have let my burner run for 6-8 hours while backing up horribly scratched PS2 games before the image was finished ripping, is that a quick way to fry my DVD Burner? Thanks for your input.
