WOW, are you serious?...that is the 1st time i've read ANY reports of Sony MIJ 8x DVD-R being TYGO2s...as you stated here:
Quote:
2 packs of Sony MIJ DVD-R's at Staples. They come up as Taiyo Yunden, TYG02
this media ID coding was scanned and done using dvdidentifier/dvdinfopro???

the reason for my shock is that i've ONLY found the TYG02s (genuine Taiyo Yuden in the 8x DVD-R format) under the Fujifilm brand MIJ naturally~ :) this is the FIRST time i've seen reports of it being Taiyo Yuden in the 8x DVD-R format for Sony....

hmm...if this is a "trend" that will continue in the near future...i will have to start looking into the Sony MIJ 8x DVD-R format more carefully...

i just want to CONFIRM and make sure you did in fact get the Sony brand 8x DVD-R MIJ that gave you the TYG02 coding when run through a media ID program...this is VERY good news if this continues....hey, even I learn new stuff today...perhaps Sony is using Taiyo Yuden in the MIJ dash format now...before, it was the identical Sony08D1 coding on BOTH the MIT and MIJ spindles...guess the tides have turned..

I also saw the Sony DVDs on sale, but at Best Buy today. 100DVD+R $19.95. Alas they were made in Taiwan according to package. I passed. Buyer beware.

Thanks... I was hoping I did things right. Had there been more MIJ Sony's there I would have scooped them up. Unfortunately that was not the case. As far as the firmware... I have not updated it because everything seems to be working just fine without the update. Being a newbie, I am scared to go ahead and update it for fear I will screww something up and render my drive useless to me. As long as things are working fine, I shall leave it be. Once things start messing up I will refer back to your great advice and go ahead with the "project" as I like to call it. You have been a great help!! Thanks again...

no worries, good luck w/ ur burns and if there is nothing "broke" right now, and you experience ZERO issues, then there is no reason to "fix something that ain't broke" :)

happy burnin'

I have been using the +r's all afternoon for PS2 games and I am getting scores of 97-98 with Nero. I would post the pic of the scan but I do not know how could someone tell me how it is done?

Hi...I don't have some of the identifier programs mentioned here but I use SmartBurn to get the info. I bought a 50-pk of the Sony DVD-R MIJ at Staples and on Smartburn they coded out to Sony. I was expecting something along the lines of TY.... Is this bad? Thanks!

kivory666 has this info in the first page:

ALL Taiyo Yuden discs will have that laser inscribed coding, since my experience with Sony media isn't that extensive, for those that are questioning whether or not Taiyo Yuden made them, but Sony slapped it's own media ID coding on them...check the inner hub and let me know what it says...if you DO NOT find the "GG000xxx" (8x dvd-r) or "TG000xxx" (8x dvd+R) where "xxx" is the batch number of the discs...THAT will be the answer to whether they are Taiyo Yuden made or not...if you don't see this coding...you DO NOT have Taiyo Yudens...

docTY, I didn't mean to argue either, those TY are best burned at 8X agreed, that's what I observed myself with my setup. Quality seems to be better then at any other speed.

The sony's should be fine. I've only used a few before but never had any problems. I knew before buying them they would probably id as sony and not ty - this didn't deter me but I'd rather have ty's too :)

I really did luck out! Too bad they didn't have anymore MIJ or I would have scooped them all up. I will have to check tomorrow and see if perhaps they got anymore in stock. One can hope!!

Back to the 'which is best, +R or -R?' topic ...

+R is the newer format and has some technical advantages of which non-videophiles will never notice ...

The bottom line is that +R CAN be booktyped making it slightly more compatable, however ... it really boils down to what make burner you have ... for example ... BenQ, Sony, LiteOn and Plextor burners prefer +R while Pioneer, Sansung and Toshiba do a better job with -R

I see nothing wrong with made in Taiwan Sony DVD Media. If it's the "Accucore" media I have used them a lot & they worked very well. If I have a choice, I WILL buy the MIJs though. I know they're TYs. The DVD+R 8x ones. Like today, I went in Staples & got a 50 pack spindle of Sony DVD+R 8x Made in Japan for $14.94 + tax. My Staples is next door to Best Buy. Literally.

Use The Best Media for The Best Burns! TYs, Verbs,(Made in Taiwan) Sony MIJs (YUDEN000 T02), Sony Made in Taiwan DVD+R 16x, Maxell MIJ, RITEK G05.

I like both the MIJ and the MIT Sony discs, for different burners ... MIJ for my BenQ and MIT for the LiteOn set tops and drive ...

"I also did a quality check with Nero on a recent back up and the quality came out @ 90.'

Where in Nero can you do such a check?

Love this site, I have learned a lot from the experts here, thanks a lot.

I called my local BB about the 100 pack Sony sale ($29.99) and they are indeed made in Taiwan. I believe I will look at Staples for the MIJ.

As I am still learning, I do have a couple of questions for you guys:

How do I find out if my Burner is bitset capable?
I have an external Sony DRX-530UL for a laptop and an internal Sony DRU-800 on my son's computer.

Then how do I change the booktype?

I am using DVD Shrink with Nero to burn.

As for the Media I have used

These are old Sony's I bought last year, but I do not understand the type ID. Is there a listing somewhere of all the different media types? these disks have worked great for me.

Manufacturer ID: SONY16D1
Physical Format Information (Last Recorded):
Disc ID: 0@P-!-00
Book Type: DVD-R

Before I learned about Memorex (from you guys) I tried to use the following Media with about half turning into coasters and some major compatibility issues. I just figured it was the +r format causing the incompatibility and the fact I was relatively new to burning DVD.

Memorex disc
Disc ID: PRODISC-R03-03
Book Type: DVD+R
Part Version: 1
Disc Size: 120mm

Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

Best Regards,

John

Get the Sony labeled Taiyo Yuden while you can. It looks like Brick and Mortar TY is going to be a thing of the past. First Fuji and now Sony is going away from Ty's. Every 16x rated Sony I saw was MIT(+ and -). It may only be temporary but with tough competition for the dollar who knows. They still had several of the 50 pack 8x Sony/Ty's left. I hope they go on sale at BestBuy soon before they are gone...no Staples here.
