brands doesnt concern the modchip but it concerns the life of the dvd and taking care of the lense. I recommend verbatim or tayo yuden DVD-R. as for the modchip, the wiikey became the "best" modchip according to many when it came out. there is no new wiikey and i dont think there will be because it updates its firmware through dvd. -- no firmware updates as of now for the wiikey

so you can burn backups onto any dvd brand DVD-R and it will work? at any speed or does the speed have to be a certain speed?
i have read another thread about backing up games and people kept mentioning you need a certain burner, and dvd brand and burning it at a certain speed for it to work. this just all seems like a huge hassle to me.
is this still the case?

Ok i'm stuck, I have installed the wiikey, I downloaded the wiikey setup disk 1.2, installed on the wii, i just set the wiikey to region free saved my settings, burned games will work sometimes and other times not, if i put a burned game in and it plays and i take it out and put an original game in it will not recogonize the disk, everytime i reset or turn power on or off i loose the settings of the setup disk i don't get it.

when the disk's play they play great but most times i just get unreconizible disk check owners manual and try again.

I have been reading for quite awhile before i posted any help would be appreciated
any suggestions or ideas

@f_locke use quality dvd media like VERBATIM or TAYO YUDEN. and about the settings it will always be like that due to the stealth mode of the modchip. but dont be afraid cuz your settings are saved right after saving it. like turning region override on.. it will stay on until you turn it off. even after turning it on, you will see the next time you put the setup disc the original settings of the modchip no matter what.

I'm quote interested in the wiikey ....sounds quite interesting.....as its pretty much like the hacked firmware for the Xbox 360.......so cant see a problem with playing online as you aren't actually hacking the security on the Console itself just tricking the dvd drive in to thinkin it is an original game....I did read somewhere tha games like mario party update the firware on your wii and if you have a PAL version its been bricking them ......anybody else heard this (Advise seemed to be keep your firware up to date).

It's not the Mario Party game! It's the Super Paper Mario game! If you don't update your system to the top update, before installing the chip, then your system will brick! If you want a nice chip, go with the WiiD! Not many people have heard of it, just because it just came out! I have it installed on my Wii, and it is working Flawlessly!!!

@akoli

The brick is possible for all system if you have a Modchip that gives you region free capability's and you use an out of region Game disc.

Example:
NTSC Paper Mario on a PAL system and your Wii is not updated with the same or higher firmware on the game disc.

If the firmware on the PAL Wii is lower then the firmware on the Super Paper Mario disc then Super Paper Mario NTSC game disc will install the NTSC update on the PAL Wii which will brick the unit due to region locks on the hardware. So the result is a PAL Unit with NTSC firmware installed on it locking the NTSC firmware out because it is not able to be used on the PAL Unit.

You can also Brick an NTSC(U) or NTSC(J) Wii playing a PAL Game Disc (Back up/Original) if the PAL game disc has a higher firmware version then what your NTSC Wii system has.

If you run any out of region game disc on your PAL/NTSC(U)/NTSC(J) and the game disc has a higher version then what your unit has. The game disc will do the update and brick your unit.

Either update your Wii to the most recent firmware using the Internet before playing the game.

Or

Use the correct region game disc for the update if you do not have an Internet connection and your Wii is not up to date.

As far as I know Super Paper Mario is the only game disc with the update actually on the disc so not all games have the update on it. So in the future more games could be like this so it is best to always keep your firmware up to date.

Sounds all good...so assume if you leave the region locked in the WiiKey/ Wiid Menu then and dont play Other regions discs then the risk is zero....Plus I can actualy let my kid handle copies of my originals knowing I can just make another copy when ti gets stood on !!! thanks

The game disc will do the update and brick your unit.
hi,

what do you mean by "brick your unit"? will it harm the chip in anyway? or stop the console working in anyway?

what exactly does it mean by "brick your unit"?

thanks

Well basically what happens is when you install an update from another region, the directory of folders is different, so when it goes to load the wii's operating system it can't find the folders which renders the wii useless untill someone can get into the code and fix it.

So "bricking" means that your wii is now a paperweight.

so if it will stop my wii from working, what solution do you recommend for me in the following situation:

- i'm in the UK
- would be downloading NTSC games since they have more seeds then PAL games on torrent sites but i will also be downloading PAL ones
- my wii wont be connected to the net (so i wont always have the latest downloads)

is it too risky getting a wiikey fitted or should i go through with it knowing it could mess my wii up forever?

well, ya its kinda risky... but i love my wiikey, its really pretty fun and my philosophy is just to stay up to date on these forums and youll be ok... for example right now i think only super paper mario and metal of honor vanguard (NTSC) will mess up your PAL wii... but i think as long as you can wait for those two games and just buy them, everything else will work..

what if i was to disable the region free overide feature on the wiikey and download only PAL games, then i won't face a risk of messing the wii up will i?
even if i did accidentaly download a NTSC game, it shouldn't work because i would have turned the region override feature off, right?

Well right now we know that its NTSC games which are bricking wii's, so stick to PAL games and youll be fine!
