ok, here's an idiot proof guide for WiiZard's PAL Super Mario Galaxy which worked for me.

here are my specs before doing anything:
Wii: PAL 2.1E
WiiKey Version 1.2 (possibly 1.3 but definitely NOT 1.9b or 1.9g)
Verbatim DVD-R @ 4x burning speed

1. Get the WiiKey 1.9g BETA update
2. Burn the 1.9g BETA PAL Wiikey with IMGBurn
3. Install the 1.9g BETA on your Wii, it's idiot proof if burned correctly
4. Get the WiiZard PAL Version
5. Burn the game with IMGBURN
6. Place the game in your Wii and try playing, it will ask for an update
7. Click yes and wait, mine froze for 30 secs @ around 30% (heart started beating rapidly) but went to 100% very quickly once it continued.
8. Enjoy the game

My Wii Firmware version is now at 3.0E (not 3.1E) but the game works perfectly.

Notice that I did NOT update the firmware via internet before installing anything. I would have but I don't have a wireless connection.

Good Luck

Can someone answer this once and for all. A few people have asked but no answers yet. Can you play a retail copy of SMG on a modded Wii without updating your WiiKey? Is the update on SMG dvd safe to take if you have a wiikey that is not up to date (original firmware on it)

You should really keep updating the first post with information because people won't look through all these pagaes and will keep reposting their questions.

@Yumeno
Sorry but people need to learn to help themselves by reading and searching. Members here are not here to spoon fed everyone.
That's also why some questions or threads go answered because the answers can usually be found by searching.

True, but it is very easy to overlook an answer when there is over 12 pages of responses...

I've searched this thread, but can't find the answer to whether either the NTSC-U or PAL version of SMG will work with a Japanese Wii with the Wiikey installed.

I've got the NTSC-J version and that works fine, but I'm not too hot on reading Japanese :P.

Anyone?

i feel compassion for you TeeVee, because certain answers ARE hard to find, but then comes along a person like HyperViso and all that compassion goes out the window and I just have to shake my head...

Well we're all obviously not as natually talented asyou then are we Sexorcist. As I said I tried searching through these pages and in the main search feature for the obvious keywords and it turned up nothing of interest. The questions have been asked, but no answers.

So, care to share your infinite wisdom with us mere mortals, or are you simply just going to point out everyone else inadequacies and keep it to yourself?

look harder, the question has been asked a MILLION times. Problem is, you want to be spoon fed the answer, when all you have to do is read one of the stickies and apply the knowledge gained.

Ah, I see what you're saying - one of those sticky threads just like the one I've looked at, i.e. here - where I posted my question! Damn, you're good. What would forums be without a solid support foundation like what you're providing.

Total modding/forum noob here, just wanted to share my experience. I bought a US Wii and had someone else fit it with a Wiikey this summer. I brought my Wii here to Japan before I ever played it in the United States. I first set up a few weeks ago with the intent of getting it ready in time to play Super Mario Galaxy. That's when I read about all these Wiikey issues online. In my case, I bought a legit Super Mario Galaxy disc (Japanese version) and I have tried to play it on my modded US Wii.

First off, I updated the Wii firmware online to 3.1U (rather than risk bricking from of a non-US update). After that, I successfully played the Wii Sports (US) that came with the system. Next was the Japanese version of WiiPlay. It asked me to update the system, which surprised me, but afterwards it worked just fine. Oddly enough, it displays the US title on the Main Menu but once it runs, it's all in Japanese.

Next was the big test: I put in Galaxy. It asked to do an update, I agreed nervously but with some confidence that it wouldn't do anything radical. The process took a while; it hung about halfway up for a while before suddenly stopping and saying "Update Complete." From that point forward I could see the SMG logo on my Main Menu and hear Mario shout when I clicked on the game. But if I tried running it, it went to black and that was it.

So then I got the Wiikey 1.9g update. I burned it and stuck it in the Wii. It appeared to work (it said update complete) and I restarted. I put in Mario Galaxy and...it still doesn't play. I can play other backup games, I can play other Japanese games, but I cannot play Super Mario Galaxy (J).

I'm having trouble running this game..
I have d2ckey chip, and I cant run this game neither with Pal version or NTSC version. I get the "unauthorized device detected"" message maybe its because my wii is semi-bricked?

Hi everyone,
I'm using a wiikey (not sure how to find out the version)
I've got the PAL wiizard version of SMG, I burnt the iso using imgburn onto memorex media.
I put the disc in, it updated to 3.1E wii firmware, the game loads no probs, but has a disc read error during the first fmv..

Do you reckon this is bad media?

if the game loads then surely the copy protection is being bypassed..I do get the occasional disc read error with other games using the same discs, but then I played paper mario for about 2 hours last night and had no problems..
My chip is new so I'm hoping my drive isn't faulty :o(

If you could recommend the best media to use..I think most of the stickies say verbatim..
does anyone else have this problem?

Nope, i DIDN'T touch the 1.3 Config disc at all... Went straight from an unknown version of the WiiKey to 1.9g Beta

if i understood correctly, you didn't flash the wiikey properly

it should run twice without ejecting anything and then when it's done, homer simpson says something. I went straight from 1.2 or 1.3 to 1.9g BETA without going to 1.9b, so i doubt that's the issue.

i read in other posts that there is an issue with the 3.1U update. Strangely enough, when I successfully got Super Mario Galaxy working, it updated my Wii Firmware from 2.1E to 3.0E (NOT 3.1E) but everything works fantastically.

wiikey clone maybe?
