I have been reading A LOT of forums about the wiikey, and noticed that in many peoples problems they say that they are able to read SMG at first. They then say that after about an hour or two, their wii does not read any of their backups anymore inclding SMG. THey also said that they had the latest firmware with the 1.9g patch.

THANK YOU FOR THE HELP

You could always download it and use brickblocker to find the region of the .iso,to do this you Run brickblocker exe, load the .iso in question and click on the "read info" button. It will bring up the results just below the button. But don't brickblock it!

If I don't use filechop on my backup wii games, than will that reduce the reader laser life of the wii reader, or will this only happen if you don't use filechop on your setup discs and homebrew for the Wiikey? Please reply and tell me if filechop is only supposed to be used on the setup discs for the wiikey, or on all of the wii games that you backup to extend the laser life.

THANK YOU

Filechop is not intended for Wii game isos.

You use filechop on images you want to run using the Gamecube compatibility mode, a.k.a. GCOS. You would use filechop on the isos of the original resources for the Wiikey. You also use it on Gamecube isos, in order to prep them before making Gamecube multi-game discs using WiiUI.

You need to do this two steps:

1) Run the Wiikey update 1.9g

2) Run a GCOS config disc for the Wiikey to turn REGION OVERRIDE back ON after the 1.9g update.

If you have questions about what I just said, read this thread.

Thank you for the reply. I had that check your connection problem when trying to update.
It's going to be hard to actually track what chip I have in my wii... the wiikey is by far the most popular one is it not? Going to try updates for other chips in the meantime lol

If you get frequent DRE's, try using SONY brand dvd-rs. I was using verbatim but verbatim isn't perfect for all games. I also own 3.1wii w/ 1.9g firmware wiikey.

Hey Guys,

First time poster/longtime lurker here.
I have a US Wii (firmware 3.1u) with a wiikey (1.9b). I want to try SMG but have been a little wary after reading all these posts. Let me make sure I have this right before I try SMG(us version).

1. update wii firmware to 3.1u

2. run wiikey update 1.9g

3. run GCOS config disc to turn region override back on

4. put in SMG let it update and enjoy.

I have a few questions though.
- do I have to down off the region override before running 1.9g?
- After this process is done will this affect my other backups??

NO. You need to turn it ON after the 1.9g update. The update will turn it off, therefore you will need to turn it back on after.

Nope! Everything will work fine.

I just bought a 100 pack of Memorex DVD-R discs from office depot. They have dots all over the top, and I was wondering if anyone knows if these would work on for Wii backups since I don't want to open them yet until I am sure.

THANK YOU

I use Memorex DVD-R (that come in the orange wrapper) for other purposes, but I had problems when I first started backing up games with them. Maybe others have had better luck, but after the disc not being recognized I started using another batch of Playo DVD-R's I had gotten for free at Staples and I've never had a problem.

Just my experience with them and my Wii. For movies, I ONLY use the Memorex which work great for me.

1. update wii firmware to 3.1u

I've got an original SMG but still have a couple of MAJOR things to determine before proceeding. I too have a US Wii with firmware 3.1u.

I bought my modified Wii used from a co-worker who doesn't know what mod chip it has but believes it is a Wiikey. I decieded to open the Wii up today (I was hesitant to do so at first) but eneded up not having the correct size phillips screwdriver to do so but will get one hopefully today.

What I was wondering at this point is:

(1) How do people know what WiiKey update they have? I guess what I'm hoping is if there is a way to see this, possibly I can verify I have a WiiKey without opening the Wii?

(2) Assuming I determine I have a WiiKey like the co-worker believes (95% sure), I have downloaded the 1.9g update. But, I'm not really sure what the "GCOS config disc" is? I've downloaded the 1.3 version. Is it just used after the 1.9g update in order to turn the region override back on? Is it that simple? Do I need to do this if my backups are all of original USA games?

Thanks!

Edit - Just remembered rafadawn's other thread is out there and will be looking for answers there.

Alright, I had the dissemble pdf but certain screws (i.e. the battery cover, and others) are so tight and/or stripped, they won't come out. Other screws I easily removed.

Like I said, I've been told there is a 95% chance my Wii has a wiikey in it. But at this point, opening the Wii will only destroy strip the screws further and Nitendo smartly used a number of various different types of screws and sizes.

If I were to put in the dvd to update to 1.9g, wouldn't it simply not work if I didn't have a Wiikey? I guess back to what I mentioned before, is there a way to know whether you have a Wiikey without physically seeing it? Maybe people know what update they are at from memory, but if there is a way to see a setting that says what update it is, maybe I can see if I have the older/update pre-1.9b or 1.9g which would verify I have a Wiikey? Hell, I don't even know if what I'm saying makes sense, let alone is a possibility.
