if you read closely, you're not suppose to run anything on the psp, if you're on official firmware. you will always get the error.

-computer should be running xp
-memory stick size is 256mb-1gig
-hardmodded batteries must be official sony battery for highest pandora rate

ps2: v7 scph-39001 - independence exploit - hdloader 0.8c - maxtor 300gb hdd

Not sure about that reply
i am unable to upgrade any further officially. i assume there has been some unofficial software on the PSP.

Hey all, I just got my custom firmware installed, and I wanted to let you know what I did to get it working, just in case going through this guide verbatim isn't cutting it (as it didn't for me).

First off, the part that didn't work for me is similar to what others have stated, which is that it copies the files, but then goes straight to the credits. For those who don't know, this means it did NOT install the custom bootloader properly (in other words, your memstick will not boot and you'll be staring at a blank screen). No amount of swapping of battery or memory stick is going to fix this, if that's the problem you're having.

So now you're probably wondering how to fix it, right? Well, I can help you there, also. The good news is the download you got does contain most of what you need. The only problem you're having is getting the memory stick formatted properly, which will then allow it to accept the custom bootloader, which will install 3.71 M33, and then allow you to do the other upgrades. I could not find a solid consensus on how this should be done, but I'll tell you what I did. I should let you know now, I was using WinXP SP2, and no matter what method of formatting I tried, I could not get the bootloader to work. The only method of formatting that did work for me was using mspformat.exe, which I believe was designed specifically to format a memory stick properly to accept a modified bootloader. So, go ahead and find that program (Google is your friend!), as well as another program called msinst.exe (the bootloader installation executable), and we'll get started.

So here's what you do:

1) Format your memory stick using mspformat.exe
2) Extract all the files from uniunbr.rar to your memory stick, and also copy the ADD_ON contents to the memory stick - these are all the files you will need to install your custom firmware.
3) Copy msinst.exe and msipl.bin (located on the memory stick in the root directory) to an easy location (c:/ would work, for instance)
4) Up to this point, I'm assuming you have the PSP connected to the PC in USB mode, so go ahead and quit out of that mode, or unplug the USB cable.
5) Open a command window and get to the directory those two files are located and type: "msinst msipl.bin" (no quotes, just as I typed it, and don't get confused and think you need to put a drive letter in there, you don't!) and hit Enter
6) It will now wait for you to reconnect your PSP, so go ahead and put it back into USB mode (Saying "Connect target MsProDuo" on the very last line) or reconnect the USB cable.
7) The expected text will be displayed (that was skipped on your installation before), so hit Y and the memory stick will be set up as a Pandora memory stick (meaning it will boot when you put a Pandora battery in).
8) Now you can follow the rest of the guide as stated, hitting X to install the custom firmware at the menu that shows up, etc.

Note: This method SHOULD work with any version of Windows, because of the use of the custom formatting tool, and because the custom installer is not used.

Hope that helps anyone else keep from going through the frustration I did trying to figure out what was going wrong.

Edit: Wording changes for clarity
Hi delateur, I would like to thank you for your guide to sorting out this issue. I have been trying to sort this out on numerous psp's, memory sticks and different computers. You have ended days and days of complete frustration. Without it, I can imagine I would still be picking up the pieces of it all over the room. Much appreciated

Happy that you got it working! It took me about five hours to figure all of that out, and as you might guess, I was a pretty happy camper once I did! I think I ended up getting kind of lucky, though, as I'm completely new to PSP modding and really had no idea where to look to find answers to what was going wrong. I only had the clue of something that wasn't happening that should be (the hitting of Y to acknowledge the installation of the custom bootloader), and from there it was a bunch of forum hunting and messing with different formatting and command line garbage. Now that I read through it again, though, I'm going to modify the wording on one line again, for clarity. Thanks for letting me know I was able to help and happy gaming!

once you create the magic memory stick on the computer (should be running XP), do NOT run anything on the psp. you will always get the error, because they are for psp's running custom firmware.

create the magic memory stick, and leave it as is. once you have it created, turn off your psp fully, put in the magic memory stick, and then put in your hardmodded/TOOL battery. the psp will turn on by itself, and if done correctly, you will have a menu on screen. for precautions, hold the l-trigger down when you put in the battery, as some ipl's require the l-trigger to be held down to boot to the menu.

Sure can. All you have to do is to flash the eeprom.bin thing for the battery so it is out of the service mode.

PSP Firmware History:

2.71 -> Got PSP modded (Waste Of Money) 3.40 -> Downloaded DAX's 3.40 OE-A -> 1.5 -> 1.53 -> 1.5 -> 1.53 xD -> 1.5 -> 3.40 OE-A -> 1.5 -> 3.52 m33 -> 3.52 m33-2 -> 3.52 m33-3 -> 3.52 m33-4 -> 1.5 -> 3.52 m33-4 -> 1.5 -> 3.71 m33 -> 3.80 m33 ->3.80 m33-3 -> 3.80 m33-5 -> 1.5 -> 3.71 m33 -> 3.71 m33-4 -> 3.80 m33 -> 3.80 m33-5

After, and ONLY after you're done with them, then you can delete it :)

@mig: What I would do, if I were you, would be either get a smallish memstick (512MB or so), or buy a really big memstick (4GB+) and always have a properly formatted stick set aside just in case. You never know what might happen, after all, and with this stick, you can always have a means to unbrick your system, assuming you have a Pandora battery on standby, as well. Just so you know, 4GB sticks are under $50 and will give you lots of room for whatever applications, etc., you might want on your PSP.

I tried autoupdating, but that didn't work so well, so you could just download the update from Dark Alex's site, and then the official firmware from an official Sony page and you're set. Follow the instructions on Dark Alex's download.

well you update it like any other update

first download it
http://www.dark-alex.org/

then get the 3.90 sony firmware
http://www.us.playstation.com/PSP/About/SystemUpdate

follow the readme .txt file included the 3.90m33 and it'll tell you where to put all the file;]

btw: the 3.90m33 if you just put it in the game folder (psp/game)
then run it it'll give you the option to download the 3.90 sony (via the psp of course)firmware so you dont need to !

I just received a datel tool battery 1200 mAh today and I charged it until 30%. Memory stick part, done... exactly what it says.

After i finished charging i switched off PSP, removed AC adaptor, removed battery and put it in. Memory stick stayed in.

It doesn't work, just black screen with the Green LED.

Edit
My memory card : Sandisk 2Gb (Pro duo)
PSP: Slim and lite (2000)

PSP: 5.00 M33-6
