So i understand that buying the retail version of SSBB does not seem to work on NTSC-U wii if you played the JAP version... but will it work just fine if you get a backup of the US release and have been playing the JAP version aswell? Is there something special i need to do?

Wiikey 1.9g
NTSC-U
firmware 3.2

It started to do the update (10 sec), then showed SSBB brawl logo in the game box in the upper left corner. Clicked on it to start the game. I got a black screen that said loading... Then it asked to make a save file. I said yes.. Then I got nothing but a white screen...
Used Verbatim dvd+r DL burnt at 1x. (Don't have -r)
Users that used Jap version got white screen as well. The fix was setting the layer break...

Open IMGBURN, select to write iso to DVD, select DVD9, click in TOOLS, SETTINGS->Write->Layer Break->User specified and type 2084960.

You might want to try this and see if it works with the US version.
IMGBURN is what I used, and I didnt make any changes to my layer break. Perhaps the version i have is already set to how you're suggesting? I'll have to check.

Wiikey with the 1.9g firmware
NTSC-U retail copy of SSBB

Tried the retail copy of the game I purchased at midnight last night, and got the disk read error. So I did just like Cecy did....
I used friidump040-w32 (took about 10 hrs id say, not exactly sure I let it run while I slept)
Resulting in the 7.92 GB img file. I then burned that using ImgBurn v2.3.2.0 at 2.4x onto a Windata DVD+R dual layer disk. I then tried putting in my copy, and that didnt read at all. It didnt have the disk read error like the retail, just plain old didnt read. I could hear the drive trying to, but the game channel never changed. So I decided to try running the 3.2 wii firmware update via wifi. I ran that (with the copy left in my wii), it reset the console after completion and when the wii booted back up, the game channel said "sysetem upday" or somthing to that effect (sorry I forgot what exactly it said lol) So I click the channel, and it says that "in order to play this game I would need to update my system". I already had, so I hit ok, it started checking the system, a progress bar moved across the screen and it finished. The screen went black and it returned to the wii channel screen, it read the disk and then the SSBB logo was now in the game channel and I clicked it and it plays like a champ. 100% perfect. After playing for a bit, I took out the copy, shut the whole system down and started it back up, and put in the retail. It now wont load at all.
Take this for what its worth, all I know is that this worked for me 100% and im happy, so hopefully others can follow my steps and get theirs working as well.
I will have a second test to this in the next day or so, as one of my friends also has a wii with a wiikey, and hes going to be bringing me a dual layer disk (I ran out) and im gonna make him a copy and we'll see if the same process works on his wii as well.
Wow, this sounds really good, but has anyone else tried this method since I am kinda scared because (Cecy) said that when she updated to 3.2, her SSBB(J) and config discs wouldn't read.

Im using SSBB NTSC-US on an NTSC-US wii... so that may be the variable.

reading these last couple of pages makes me not want to open my retail copy because guarantee it won't work, which is just dumb. It's nothing to do with the wiikey or mod, i think it has to do with they system not being able to read the retail dual layer. the same issue, some systems had with the japan release.

OK

I just got back from my friend's house and I updated my Wii to 3.1U with the US retail disc from the 3.1J firmware I had on my US wii (Good news for those who semi-bricked their Wii when updating to jap firmware to play SSBB JAP).

With 3.1U the retail disc worked fine and I could access Subspace Emissary past the 1st level(meaning the second layer was readable).

So, its not true that retail versions will not work if you played the Jap release.

Of course, it might be different with the 3.2U update, which I'm going to try in just a minute, but I am confident it'll work.

I'm getting the same thing. I tried the retail SMG disc and it wouldn't read until about the third try. Then I tried Brawl again and it gave me the same errors and noise.

Ok guys just to clarify..

My ORINIGAL SSBB in US not J. Never used the J version on my wii. Waited for the original to come out. Used Friidump 04 to dump the game and img burn to burn on Verbatim dvd+r at 1x. I updated online to 3.2. Loaded original and got a disk read error. Loaded the burnt copy. It began to update which took like 10 sec. Then Brawl appeared in the channel. I clicked on it, got a black screen that said loading, and then it asked me if I wanted to create a save file. I selected yes. Then the screen went white.
I have not tried to reburn it yet. I have Memorex +r DL, I will try those next and burn at different speeds and see if that works.

I would recommend u trying verbatim for dual layer. i am going attempt to friidump my copy now. It's definitely a disc and system compatibility issue, not a wiikey for "dirty lens" as nintendo claims. I have two wiis, one modded and one not. i popped in my retail smash into unmodded and it sounded like it was eating my disc.

I just got SSB for my friend in school and I have to give it to him tomorrow. I dont fully understand rawdumping because I never did it before. I dont to wait for someone to upload it, I would like to do it so I can learn. Can anyone give my a link to download rawdump that I can rip dual layer. Thanks!!!

P.S. I believe people should search before asking, so if anyone can point me in the right direction, that is cool too.

I'll be trying my dump using a Verbatim dual layer disc, I'm at 20% complete on the dump process. I'll post my results.

The only dual layer discs I found were HP DVD+R Double Layer. Think that will work?

Rawdump will not work. Use friidump version 04.

Click on the link Binkie7 sent me to a few pages back to find where to download it.

When you download friidump make sure you extract the files to your program files on C:
Once you have done that follow these steps

Start Menu
Run
type: CMD
cd..
cd..
cd..
cd program files
cd friidump
Load the game into your gdr drive then type
friidump -g (your drive here in: in my case it was f:) -a

It should look like this friidump -g f: -a

Then it should begin to dump the game.
The thread is titled "How to use Friidump"

You will find the iso in your program files in the file called friidump when it is finished.

Just because I did doesn't mean you will. My issue could be with burn speed, media, my wii etc..
My file is the correct size and shows up in the channel so I don't think it is the dump.
I have given you the information you need, so don't be a tool about it.

Try using IMGBurn and set the layer break to 2084960.

Do this by opening IMGBURN, select to write iso to DVD, select DVD9, click in TOOLS, SETTINGS->Write->Layer Break->User specified and type 2084960

Then burn at 4X speed if media is compatible.
