I spent the 100bucks+ on DVDXCopy Gold and I have not been able to copy a single DVD with the Express (which was the reason I bought the package in the first place: to copy the DVD's to one disc). I have been on the DVDXpress forum for weeks, tried all suggestions: NOTHING.
So I am totally happy with DVDShrink!! Wish I had some of the 100bucks+ to donate to the author (I know he does not want any money for it).

I noticed that many of you claim to be using DVD Decrypter along with DVD Shrink and a burning program to backup your DVDs. My question is: what is the need for DVD Decrypter? So far I have been able to backup all of my DVDs just using DVD Shrink and CloneDVD to burn the image. Is there something I am missing?

Thanks,
-Rye

I had no problem ripping that movie with DVDSHRINK 3.1 . Burned with RecordNow DX and Sony 510. I removed all xtras and compressed under 20%. Results looked very good.

wazus: your problem is probably cheap media. (try to start new threads when your problem is unrelated)

ryedizzel: i only use decrypter if shrink will not rip the dvd. I then use shrink as a compressing program.

Hi Pete,
I think my burning software - NEO DVD Plus made by mediostream.com is not related to ROXIO (roxio.com) who make Easy DC Creator. Some members reported problems of burning DVD from HD w/ this software.

Hi Yuedana,
The media used is Maxell DVD-R (bought from Staples). Thanks to dvdrhelp.com link to lordsmurf.com who has tested many media and give us an excellent guide on media.
However I agree this question about using DVDShrink 3.1.2.9/3.1.3 to RIP "Pirates of the Carribbean" to hard drive - a process which I donot think media is involved yet should be posted under another thread.
For the question of Is DVDShrink better than DVDXcopy- My thinking is definitely a big YES. Besides the cost: one is free and another is $99.00, DVDShrink has continued updating the product for free PLUS how much tech support one would get from DVDShrink also for free. Just look at how many answers I got since I posted this DVDShrink ripping problem w/ "Pirates..." on this site.
Thank you all.

pulsar,

Some of us really, truly hate that opening that we must endure when using Xcopy Xpress.

We want our backup to be just that, a backup pure and clean, just like the original with no added opening screen.

That is the reason we use DVDShrink or programs like it.

Pete

Understand dislike of that screen, doesn't really bother me though. It is removable, but it looks a bit long & drawn out. I like dvdx for its' simplicity & what I think is a good quality back up. My system works reaaly well for what I need it to do. If we were all the same the world would surely be a boring place!

A couple of questions:

I looked at a DVDShrink v3.1 tutorial and it indicates that it uses NERO to do the actual burning, so am I to understand that NERO is what you actually use to do the burning?

I use a DVD ROM drive now to rip and a Plextor 708A that burns at 8X using DVDXcopy Express, rip and burn times are generally under 25 minutes. Would using DVDShrink rip and burn in similar or better time frames?

Once a DVD is ripped using Shrink can it be off loaded permanently to a hard drive rather than or in addition to coping to a DVD blank?

Does Shrink do +R copies without issues?

You cannot make a copy of a copy using DVDXcopy. Can copies of copies be made using DVDShrink?

Can all opening screens, FBI warning etc. be eliminated so the movie starts at the actual beginning when you insert it in the player?

Thank You.

Hi Pete,
Well AD is running slow again, My last post for the night.
Now I know why you want to get more movies on a single disc! 450!! I think I've burned about 50. I've got plenty of space still. RE:

As a general statement and or question, I beleive XCopy does not copy a DVD in 5.1 Surround you will only get stereo or something less than perfect quality. Also I noticed you can not use the title features on the dvd.
Also is the statement 100% true about not being able to copy an XCopy DVD? I havent tried thie yet but had intentions to.

Would like to here comments....

You cannot copy a copy of a DVDXcopy within their legal limits, there may be other ways. You can definatly copy 5.1 sound.

You say you can copy in 5.1 sound is this in X Copy Express? I haven't had success in the regular X Copy without using Express and the only options in Express are Wide Screen/Full and language I beleive I don't have the software in front of me. I purchased Platnuim.

I too had problems trying to backup Pirates of the Caribbean with the New DVD Shrink & got error almost right away, so I used the old beta one & no problems. I'm sure the guy from DVD Shrink will fix the nasty bug soon.

I used DVD Shrink 3.0 beta & had zero coasters & no problems. But with the new version 3.1.1 I got a error right away, can't remember what the error was. Ask Scuba Pete he had the same problem with Pirates of Caribbean DVD, maybe his memory is better than mine. I forgot to say I burn with Nero 5.5.10.54. Also did anyone send in a bug report to DVD Shrink about this??? I would, but can't remember the error.Remember he can't fix the problem if he doesn't know about it.

Well I'll be - -

Someone was really talking about me :-))
I used Shrink 3.0 Beta 5 to rip "Pirates" and it worked OK.

Recently, I had difficulty with "Finding Nemo", Shrink 3.1.2 gave me errors as did Nero Recode however (and I do this only out of despair) when I resorted to using DVD XCopy Xpress, it joined everyone else and refused to rip it also.

Salvation came in the guise of the newest of the very new Shrink 3.1.3 which did get the job done. (??) Go Figure ! I looked and couldn't find a difference that would explain it, but that's what happened -

asrob,

Audio track select is in set-up for DVDXcopy Platinum, Simple (Express). Click SIMPLE, click OPTIONS, click AUDIO LANGUAGE -ASK ME, this will set a default and ask you what track you want to use every time you make a copy.

I use Platinum SIMPLE all the time, can't see any great advantage to using PLATINUM.

I will be trying SHRINK real soon to see the differences.

Florida,

Make sure when you go shopping for DVDShrink at the "Your money isn't any good here" Store, be sure you get version 3.1.3 - Once you try it you'll wonder why you bought DVD XCopy (kinda like the rest of us)

scubapete,

I'm going to try Shrink real soon. I have MR.Bass's tutorial and he makes it look easy. Are there any first time setup issues you would like to make me aware of?

Is there any generation loss when you make a copy of a copy with Shrink?

Thank you.

Setup issues ??

None come to mind - get rid of Roxio if you have it -

a hint or two -

Always sick with a good name-brand media and don't forget to download DVD Decrypter for those rare times when Shrink can't decrypt a DVD.

You wrote - any generation loss when you make a copy of a copy with Shrink? -

We are talking digital files here not VHS Tape - there is no loss when going from copy to copy.

enjoy,

Pete
