i hope someone can clarify.

i've downloaded the hackmii installer and the instructions say to unzip it into the sd card. at this point, i didn't know whether it was ok to put the folder into my sd card with the other things from the mod or if i needed to format the sd card first.

also, am i supposed to put the folder in my sd's root directory or just the 4 files inside the hackmii zip.

i've done a few variations and whenever i go into the homebrew channel, there is no option to install anything.

the instructions also said to rename the installer file to boot.elf. Is this done right after i move the files into the SD card or is it done during the installion somehow.

thank you.
Read the directions again.

It clearly says what to do.

Plus where does it say to install Bootmii in this guide?
technically it doesn't say it in this specific guide, but there is a link that leads to this http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/777675

although it was optional, i wanted to install bootmii just like it said to have myself a nand back up

from that guide, i went to this guide
http://yafaze.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=145

and that is where i got my questions from. i've read it several times but it still seems kind of vague to me.

i can't get the hackmii installer to run. the guide says to unzip the file to a SD card. when unzipped, you get 1 folder with 4 files in it. the guide doesn't specify where in the SD card to put these files.

So why post the question in this guide. Why not post it in the other guide that actually referes to Bootmii.

I think I did a stupid thing for not reading first. I think I installed Bootmii because now I can't install any cIOS or WADs. How can I fix this?

i followed the guide i think 2 days ago and it looks a whole lot better now. there were a few parts that i had to figure out or assume, but the instructions have been improved a great deal. thanks

i did want to ask. when i got to the step to install cIOS38_rev13a, i couldn't find it in the homebrew channel, instead there was one very similar which was cIOS38_13a. everything else was where it was supposed to be. either way, i went ahead with it, and followed the rest of the steps. should i go through the steps to fix this?

my current state is, i've got the hbc working, homebrew browser installed, back up loader installed (haven't used yet), usb loader gx installed (2 out of 3 games i preinstalled in the HD worked).

@ahoraes

Did you follow the full guide?

What error are you getting when installing the cIOS38_rev13a?

@bluejae

I just checked and everything in the SoftmodPack is named properly. It says cIOS38_rev13a Installer and that is what the meta file is labeled. so I don't see where you got the cIOS38_13a from.

So I never did this step:

HACKMII INSTALLER: Download the hackmii_installer_beta2 from HERE and extract it to your PC. Rename the installer.elf file to boot.elf and drag it to the ROOT of the SD card.

Because the guide from 2 days ago didn't tell me to. I just followed the links you provided.

Anyways it works perfectly fine so I'm happy :) What does the Hackmii installer do that the other links didn't provide? Or is it just for clarity

The Hackmii installer installed the HBC. From there in my option made things go allot more smoother. No installing cIOS7 like you had to in the linked thread. As well it seemed the link thread used a Wiigator Launcher that did not have the #002 fix.

So I did some thinking and came up with these steps to get the job done.

i found it strange. i followed everything correctly until that little hiccup. i never renamed anything. i just unzipped as instructed what i needed into the SD card. everything else was there such as WAD, downgrader, and some other ios file but that was later used in the guide. there was never a cios38_rev13a.

what do you think i should do now? should i redownload the softmodpack and go through just the cios install step?

Still whatever it plays backups no more scratched discs!

I don't know what to tell you. I even placed it on my SD card and it says cIOS36_rev13a Installer.

Go ahead and redownload the SoftmodPack and then install cIOS38_rev13a again.

I did the guide yesterday (before your update to the guide) and installed HBC 1.0.3 using the auto update of HBC 1.0.1. And after that I was getting error -1035 when trying to install WADs. Somehow I solved the issue uninstalling the cIOS249 and installing it back and then running the cios_fix.

After that, I did everything again from the beginning and it worked. The only thing that I did different was not installing HBC 1.0.3 so right now I have HBC 1.0.1 installed and I would like to know if it is safe to install HBC 1.0.3 at this point and what is the safest way to do it?

Can I install it as you propose in your guide (new steps) even that I have HBC 1.0.1 installed? If Yes, do I need to remove it first or just install the new one over old one?

I would uninstall it first.

Just uninstall it like you would any other channel in the system data management.

Then follow the steps in the updated guide to reinstall it.

So what is the point of bootmii if you can't use it before you completely mess around with everything? Sure you can install it after you are done modding everything but by then you have nothing to worry about. Is there any way to do this with bootmii installed so that you don't have to worry about bricking your wii?

You can install Bootmii before you do more dangerous things.
All it takes is Bannerbomb and the Hackmii installer, neither of which I would consider dangerous.

And it isn't just installing Bootmii, it's installing Bootmii and making a back of your nand.
And people do brick their Wiis after they have installed most stuff. They learn about something new and say hmmm I should try that.

Finally brick protection isn't the sole purpose of Bootmii.
From Bootmii.org "...and will eventually form the basis of a new generation of homebrew applications for the Wii."

So could you backup your Nand before you do anything with bootmii, then remove bootmii and do all of the modifications? Then just reinstall it afterwards? Or would that even matter?

You can backup your nand anytime you want if you Wii is functioning.

It is Bootmii that allows you to backup your nand.

No need to remove Bootmii.
The three things I tell people that they can do if they don't want it coming up every time they start there Wii is:
1. Take the SD card out
2. Rename the Bootmii folder that the Bootmii installer put on their SD card to something else and then rename it back to Bootmii when they want to use it again.
3. Edit the configuration file in the Bootmii folder and set it to launch the System Menu. Bootmii will still come up but it will go to the System Menu after a set amount of time that you have set.

If you don't want to take the SD card out to do the 3rd one you can use the Bootmii Configuration Editor which can be gotten from here http://wiibrew.org/wiki/BootMii_Configuration_Editor
Or you could download it through the Homebrew Broswer.

Thanks for this guide! It just rocks. I have had my Wii running backed up games for 2 weeks now and love it!

1 question. I rand the update when IOS38_rev12 was here.
Now I see we are on IOS38_rev13.

What should I do to get to the new version on my Wii? Even though I got it working I did not fully understand what we were doing. Can anyone enlighten me on how to get rev13 up and running? Do I need to downgrade and then upgrade or do I just run it with homebrew chan?

Thanks for the help! And thanks again for the killer guide!

You may have mentioned this in this long thread/forum, but is there still no fix for LU64 OR LU65 serial machines?
Any update info you have on this?

Thanks man!

larrylje,
great guide many thanks for all the work you put into producing this... But might i make a request?

Could you add a change log to the bottom of the 1st post. You see it's changed so much since I used it a few weeks ago, and it would be nice to understand why and the implications. When I used it it refered out to Ultimate Wii Soft-Mod Guide (http://www.yafaze.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=113), but now you use HACKMII INSTALLER.

Great guide man, I just ran this and the "Launch backup games from Disc Channel" mod yesterday and both are working (had a minor issue on the Disc Channel one, posted it there, apparently Preloader wont find hacks.ini on an SDHC card).

This was myfirst mod ever, of anything, so trust me guys this is doable, just [i]follow every instruction step-by-step[i/], don't think you got the idea of it and start winging shit, this guide explains almost every button click you'll do in the whole process, so use it! :p
Thanks again mate!

Yes, the files in this guide are pretty small, however a BootMii backup of the NAND is much bigger than that, and depending on the homebrew apps you choose to keep, you might find yourself wanting more space. If your Wii is BootMii compatible (if HackMii Installer says it can be installed normally) I reccomend you have enough room for a backup as soon as you finish modding it.
(Important: If you have to install BootMii as an IOS you will NOT be able to backup your NAND unless you have a GC Controller. For some reason using the power button to cycle options when BootMii is installed as IOS doesn't work yet.)
