if you mount the disk image.. you can then drag and drop the files in there onto your desktop. wait til they copy over. if they are too big to fit onto one disc. then you need to use the "rar".
once you have the files on ur desktop hit "apple+I" and check how big the files are.

I've been having weird occurences with my ripping/burning experience, so thought I'd ask to see what people thought.
i had a dual 1.8 desktop g5 running panther, was ripping using mac the ripper and then burning/compressing with popcorn. worked well for a few months then all of a sudden started going haywire during the compressing. popcorn would all of a sudden start continually increasing the estimated time for compression until it froze in the middle. from that point on my mac started crashing frequently and i had work done on it numerous times until finally apple replaced the unit. (they replaced the processors twice and i went back to trying to burn the same way i had been, only to have the same thing happen).
i now got my new unit, a dual 2.0 g5 with tiger. i've been burning using fastdvdcopy for a few weeks now with no problems, until last night the same thing started happening. the program started increasing the estimated burn time (from 7 minutes up to an hour) until finally i quit the app. i am afraid if i continue to try to burn it is going to mess my mac up again. anyone have this experience or know what might be going on? any info would be great....

Yea hey everything works out fine on every step except when I try to use DVD2OneX. I added the files that I used from DVDbackup. And I only have the option to do one at a time ans press start. I'm just fully confused. I tried fallowoing your steps but you can't select the whole DVD to compress. And even when I did one that was kind of large it did not down size it that much. I was wonderin if someone could help me out with that because I'm totally lost.
Thanks a lot

@ sgustin:
you can use "disk copy" option in dvd2OneX.
and that will to the entire disk..
i've compressed down from 7gbs to single dvd and its kept pretty good quality on it.
as far as dvdbackup goes.. i'm not familiar with it. what i use is MTR. i'm not sure what OS you are on? MTR is a free app. and you have the option of doing main feature only. then you can use "disk copy" on dvd2OneX. if you use popcorn... there's issues of "main feature only" from MTR, and popcorn will have you error message. so i stick it through dvd2OneX and test with DVD Player before burning.
worse case scenario, if you have a DL burner. you can do it that way.. i know popcorn gives you the option on doing just the movie..
now, toast 7.. does include popcorn integrated into it.
hope that gives you some ideas.
@ laminated
i really dont have any idea on this one. you may wanna check with our buddies at:

Thanks to all who replied!
I gave up on the "raring" thing and went out and bought a Lacie Dual Layer DVD Writer - all my probs would be solved i thought - well not exactly.
I can burn cds/normal dvds ok and they play in any other mac!
BUT when it comes to the dual layer ones - i put in a dvd to copy and it burns ok then when i put the new copied disc into another dvd drive (like on my powerbook or my mates imac g5) the disc is thrown back out (after making a few odd noises)! Any ideas!
I've tried this with three diff brands - TDK, Verbatim and bulkpaq.
However if i put the new copied dvd in my new external dvd drive (the one i used to burn the disc it reads it fine!)
PS- im using toast titanium 6 to burn them.
Any suggestions?

I used my powerbook a good 4 months, no problem with the mac the ripper and DVD2One, toast system for ripping shrinking burning. Ând then the dvd burner died.
Mac replaced it. Put in a matshita DVD-R uj-825. I dont know what the original was. This this new drive is posing all kinds of problems. spend many hours trying to figure out but seems like a problem in firmware dealing with different zones. Mac the ripper will rip an "all zone" dvd but the files come up unviewable. Such problem discs seem to come from the USA, even though they are "all zone" and not Zone 1.
I think this drive is heavily protected, blocking even the standard rippper - DVD2One by pass.
Any one else agree, have same problem?

Right, ive ripped whole disk usin MTR, compressed using movie only, to a size that will fit on disk, and burnt using UDF setting in toast 6 (as toast 7 wudnt let me burn ANYTHING) and it burns without fail. BUT when played back on a PS2 or dvd player, or the Mac, it crashes or starts jumping on the last 2 chapters. and yet the same video_ts folder plays fine if played from the HDD without craching the last 2 chapters. any ideas? ive re-ripped it again just to be sure, 3 times, and re compressed them as well, but stil no luck on the last 2 chapters. am copying 28 days later by the way.
help appreciated !

What about dvd backup 1.3 then to toast or would i have extract the dvd files with mac the ripper or would the backup1.3 not give me the right type of files?

the types of files on this one.. wont matter.. because they both rip it the same format..
you may have a badly pressed disc that has those last two chapters somehow screwed up.
and what media are you using?

Is there a way convert DVD to DV? I have created multiple DVD using Mac, and also some from VHS to DVD recorder. I am trying to see if there is a way I can get video from various DVD and put them together to create a new DVD with combined video from several DVD.
I assume to do this, I need to convert DVD to DV ad take it to iMovie and then put them together and write to a DVD.
Is there any other way? To do this, I assume I have to convert DVD to DV, what would be a good way to do this? Toast 6 has some limitted ability, I have to convert entire .VOB file, and may be even more and then throw awy unwanted clips. Cinematize claims I can select which clip I want to convert and only pull that clip.
I have toast6, should I buy Cinematize? Or Is Toast7 has new features that will do this?
Any other suggestion?

The search function should have taken care of that.
BUT: dvdxdv or cinematize would probably take care of you.

i ripped the usual suspects, just the main feature, and i tried to burn it with toast and when it played on my dvd player, it played it in 4:3. what's up with that?
yes im a newbie but i read all the guides, i burned it using dvd-rom under the data tab. i didn't put the audio_ts in the dvd but will try tonight after work.
i have that phillips dvd player that plays DivX. the top selling one on amazon and am using memorex dvd+rs what is going on? if i just put int he audio_ts folder will it work properly? kinda hard to imagine that an empty folder can do so much.

the audio-ts folder isn't your problem. The dvd probably contains the widescreen AND the 4x3 version. You burned the 4x3 version.
Rip the WHOLE DISC then use DVD2OneX to select the program you want to burn/compress.

OOHHH! now that makes a lot of sense cuz u are right, the usual suspects does come with both 4:3 and 16:9. so then if i use mactheripper, and instead of extracting main features, i extract it by using the title method, can't i pick and choose which one i want to extract therefore just choosing the widescreen version? or must i use dvd2one?
is there another free program out there that will compress it besides dvd2one for the mac?
if there is a free tool for the pc, which one would u recommend?
i also tried to copy rounders, which is less than 4.7 gigs total, and when i put it in my dvd player, it was very blotchy. basically didn't work. why did this happen? do i have to extract the movie and burn it with toast to avoid that problem?

You should extract the whole disc with MTR. The movie only extraction sometimes makes discs that don't work. (At least until MTR 3.0 comes out).
Then use DVD2OneX to select movie only and pick your tracks.

Hi,
First and foremost a huge thankyou to mediaguru for the tutorial!
I am a newbie Mac user (I've only had a Mac for maybe 2-3 months) and also had never ripped DVD's before tonight, and thanks to the tutorial I can now back up my movies!
I just have one question in regards to quality...
Is it normal to experience some quality loss in my ripped DVD's? It isn't extreme by any means.. the disk plays perfectly, but it is slightly more pixelated than the original. Is this something that can be fixed or is it unavoidable?

The only time I notice anything like that is during very dark or black scenes.
Are you compressing the WHOLE disc? Here's the deal. If you have a 7GB disc with a bunch of extras on it you probably have the movie around 3-5 gb. The extras are eating up a bunch of the storage space which could be used for higher quality level video for your main feature.
So unless the disc is close to 4-5gb, or 6 if it's cartoons, I usually do the feature only in DVD2OneX. That way the full storage space of the disc is dedicated to the quality of the movie and isn't taken up by the extras.

I'm still pretty new to this... G4PB w/superdrive, tiger. I've been backing up my DVDs with the simplest method I could find and have been successful. I DVDBackup then simply split the main movie files in two (copying those first "menu/info" files) and click burn. However, I've ripped a few movies that don't want to be split. When I test the folders using DVDplayer, the movie won't play unless all the main .VOB files are together in the same folder. Any idea the reason for this, and any simple (and ideally cheap) solution?
thank you
