Thanks Lox...I believe I downloaded the necessary firmware and now I have to go through it all again. It is compressing and extracting right now. Must I use dual layer DVDs in this burner? That is something I'm not doing.

I use popcorn to burn the DVDs...didn't realize you could just download free software! It's working fine now except the LaCie burner won't work with just a DVD-RW. It will only record on these other DVD's I have that are lightscribe and extrememly expensive. I don't know if it has something to do with it being dual layer or lightscribe or not.

first off. you have one great drive.. if its the d2.. i have the same one.
now.. as far as media goes.. you are not constrained to using on lightscribe discs. you can use regular blanks. trust me.. much cheaper.
there is no free software for compression on mac. you use mac the ripper to rip the dvd.. you need porcorn or toast 7 or just DVD2OneX to compress.
when you buy your blank media tho.. buy quality stuff. sony and fujis.. make sure they are made in japan. verbatim dvds.
if you have anymore questions pm me or just reply in the thread.

I'm trying to rip a ps2 game in order to install a custom patch. I know these rippers work with dvd movies, but will they work with ps2 games-dvd/cd/dvd rom? If not, then any suggestions?
Any help would be great.
Thanks

Wow...this guide is amazing. Thanks to everyone involved....specifically MediaGuru.
The only problem that i am having is this: the aspect ratio. When i play it on my computer, it looks fine and normal. It's in widescreen.
When i play it a dvd player downstairs, it's a compressed full screen. Basically, the widescreen is pushed in from the sides to make the picture look funny. It's not a MAJOR problem...but one that i would like to fix if it isn't hard.
I used MTR, DVD2OneX, and Dvd imager to burn it on Disc Utility.
Any thoughts?
Thanks a bunch!

First of all, thanks to all who contributed to this! I'm up and running, copying my DVD's for the first time today and everything's actually working perfectly.
My only question is this: why not use Popcorn and combine the last two steps (compressing & burning) since it's only $10 more than DVD2One?? I apologize if this question was already covered - I didn't read pages 3-6 of this thread.

My media? Are you referring to the type of DVD-R's that i buy? If so, im using blank Memorex DVDs.
Sorry, definitely a new guy when it comes to all this.
I will check out the dvd player settings as well.
Thanks a bunch Thelox.

dvd2onex gives you better quality when compressing. the new DVD2OneX now also burns.
@Jazzguy02

yes.. the brand. stay away from memosux. they cause playback issues. your better bet is to stick to taiyo yuden or verbatim. much better playback. sometimes when errors occur when burning, bad media can be your culprit.
@mac242

yes. on that one i know there's been issue with no sound once it is burned tho. i know there is a codec / plug-in so it will fix that. i will need to research that one. but try it anyways and see what it will come out to.
ok.. i think that's it.
but as stated before. do NOT use cheap media. especially since you can find much better media when on sale at either the same price or even cheaper.
there is a forum here on aD for just media. yes.. they mainly use PCs. Yes the software wont be the same. but media is media.. media is universal.. and every sunday or sooner they do have the media sales. to where you can find better media at memosux prices.. if not better

there you go. and happy burning

Hi all,
I'm new to this forum and relatively new to mac using. I've tried the original tips from mediaguru with some of my dvd collection and run into problems using MTR
1- with some classic dvds ( usually less thn 4.4 GB) the rip process seems to work ok, the films are viewable using vlc but not other media players. and when burnt the discs are unplayable on my samsung950hd dvd player
2- with other films there is an error message at the end of the ripping process stating that there may be difficulty playing back...
why should this be? I have read that MTR is not 100% effective but so far I've had zero success. these films are unviewable even on vlc
could you guide me through where I've been going wrong?
your help much appreciated

with the trial.. it only does the first 30 minutes.
how did you rip the dvd?
did you do full disc or main feature?
would recommend doing full disc then using DVD2OneX to strip out the main feature

your dvd may be a bad press from a bad batch. that's why it would be a good idea to check another dvd.. and see if that works. you may want to do the full disc in arccoss mode.. just trying to eliminate the obvious
@ macfla
Quote: what do you use that for?
i realized i didnt reply to this one. popcorn is a one program that basically does the same thing that DVD2OneX and toast 6 do. you can choose main movie or full disc with popcorn. i like the quality on the compression from DVD2OneX. granted.. someetimes the movies are sometimes under the 4.7gbs so it wont need it. but most arent. only some of the older dvds.
and you get more options in DVD2OneX. you can take out just one or two languages. you can take off subtitles.. on popcorn you cant.
now.. toast 7.. does toast 6 and popcorn in one.. among other things. again.. when compressing down big movies.. quality just isnt there..
hope you didnt unsubscribe from this thread and will read this. but i know it may help others.

Have patience with an old man, plz! :-) I have a set of coasters (for 12)! Managed to rip, compress, and burn one DVD that works. I'm using the trial form of /dvd.2oneX2 after MTR. When the compression is finished, I've been receiving, not the Audio_TS and Video_TS folders, but what I think is a disc image -- namely, e.g., "Fantasia.img." When I click on that, I get the disc icon that I see in "Disc Utility" and not the audio/video_TS files. If I double click on the name (not the icon), I see the two folders; but it seems to me that it was those which I moved into Toast 7 and burnt a disc that plays in my computer but not on a separate component DVD player. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks for any help.

if you have toast 7 you can just drop the video ts folder into it.
click on the video tab.
click on "dvd-video from video_ts"
you can then drop the folder there.. or just click "select" then just find the folder that way..
click on "Copy options"
then in the smaller window you can choose either whole movie or just the main movie
on the left side you will see a checkbox.. with the phrase "fit-to-dvd video compression"
you wont get the same quality as DVD2OneX.. which actually sounds like you're making and image of course. when you are going to compress with that one.. make sure it says to files. cant remember the exact words.. once you hit to start. it will ask you what to name the folder and where to put it.
hope that helps

Is there anyway to convert a VIDEO TS file that is just the Main Feature of a DVD I ripped using MTR into a MPEG 4 file?

Thanks, TheLox. I appreciate your information. I had read all the "directions" at the beginning of this thread and I thought I was following them accurately. But I expected that, after compressing, I'd see the Video & Audio folders in the designated place; however, what I found was the "disc image" (I suppose) and no icon, just the name, e.g., "Fantasia.img." Double clicking on that name, brought a rectangular-shaped, black icon. When I double clicked on that, I found the same icon on my desktop and a new screen with the Video & Audio_TS folders. Is that the usual way? It?s different from what I?ve been reading, I think; and, perhaps this was the reason why my burned discs wouldn?t play in my separate DVD player. Seems like an extra bit of trouble to get to those two TS folders. Thinking that this was not the way the DVD2OneX program was supposed to work, I assumed I was doing something wrong.
In summary: after the DVD2OneX program has finished compressing, should I not find in the place I had designated the two folders for audio and video?
Thanks for your help; I am very grateful. You?re helping an old dog learn new tricks!
