yes.. once DVD2OneX is done. you should have the two folders.. sometimes it will only give you a video_ts. you can drop that into toast 7.. it will to the rest.
toast 6.. you may want to add the audio_ts one.
dont worry.. it too me a while to figure all this out..

Yeah I tried Handbrake already and I didn't get any sound from the converted file. The Video TS file has sound when I play in DVD Player, but when I convert it to an MPEG 4 and play it in Quicktime or iTunes, there is no sound.

I used Handbrake to rip directly from the DVD and it didn't work, that's why I went to MTR to try another way, but I guess there is no alternative to get it to an MPEG 4.

Nice guide : )
Can you recommend a straightforward way of creating menus for titles that were made in DVD2OneX in Movie Only mode. As well as starting the movie, I'd like to be able to add selection of different audio stream and subtitles to the menus.

Hi,
After reading a large part of this thread, I hope my question hasn't been asked already. If so, please direct me to the right message. Please bear with my newbie questions.
I would like to back up a commercial DVD using a dual layer disk so that the picture is not compressed. I am using an external Pioneer A09 drive, Toast 7, MacTheRipper, and OSX 10.3.9 I have been able to back up my movies onto single layer DVD+R's with no problems before using Popcorn and Verbatim disks.
Can someone give me a few ideas for how to burn a movie onto a dual layer disk? How does the burning software (be it Toast 7 or anything else) know where the layer change should be set? If anyone has a Pioneer A09 or 109 drive, can you recommend a dual layer DVD+R brand that works well? I know I have a lot of questions...any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot in advance!

In Toast 7, there are two options I can choose from.
1. Under the Data Tab: DVD-ROM (UDF)
2. Under the Video Tab: DVD-Video from VIDEO_TS
This 2nd option is how I back up commercial movies onto single layer DVDs. However, I was told that I should use the 1st option to burn my movie onto dual layer DVDs. I would really appreciate some direction from anyone who's used Toast 7 to burning DL DVD's before. The DL coasters get pretty expensive. Thanks everyone in advance!

Thanks speters!
When you burn using the 2nd option, do you uncheck the "Fit-to-DVD video Compression" box on the left? If you do check it, do you change anything in the Copy Options box? Thanks for answering my questions.

If you look just above the red 'burn' button in Toast 7, you will see DVD in small letters with a tiny symbol next to it. It is acutally a drop down menu. Click it and you can select DVD DL.

re: Dual Layer 1:1 copies -
I would also like to know if anyone has any info on matching the layer change on the copy to the original. Some of you might not realize that the point where the layer change occurs is NOT usually when the first layer gets full. When you author a DVD you can actually identify the exact point in the movie that the DVD player has to switch from one layer to the next. This is done because there can be a slight delay when this change occurs & the movie can skip or hiccup noticebly in that spot. The DVD author wants to be sure to put that point in an inconspicuous time in the movie where the the viewer wouldn't recognize the slight hiccup - generally at a scene change or when a cut occurs.
It should be noted that some players respond faster than others when it comes to layer change... I've never noticed a layer change on my player but since I'm now buring my first 1:1 dual layer copy, I imagine I will see it on this movie if I can't replicate the original's change point.

I used mactheripper and DVD2One and burned the dvd using toast. Both times I got this message: Sector 1426912 is unreadable, verification failed. Can you tell me what this means?
I also tried using dvdremaster. With the same outcome.
Thanks

Where can I find DVDBackup and OSEX? Can they still be downloaded? Are they still useful?
I have a DVD I cannot rip with MTR and I was thinking to try some other options. Is there any other software for Mac out there?
Thanks guys

Hello,
First of all a great thanks to all the contributors to this forum.
I face the following problem.I have a PB G4 17" 10.4.5 and iMac MacIntel Core Duo.I have used Mac the Ripper to rip lots of DVD's. But when I play SONY movies I cannot rip them.I performed a little search and found out that SONY movies use an ARccOS encryption thst does not allow MTR to function.
Could you please provide a solution to my problem?I would me most grateful cause it is very irritating,
Cheers

Hi Chris,
I use MacTheRipper Ver. 2.6.6 to rip DVDs. Although I have not ran into one with ARccOS encryption yet, I was under the impression that MTR has an option for this type of DVDs. In the "Mode" screen, the pull down menu has an option that reads something like "Full Disc Extraction ARccOS." Does this option not work? If you have some insight into this, please share with us. If you have an older version, then try 2.6.6. It's worked well for me so far.
Good luck,
-mike

I have been trying to convert a .VOB file to .mp4. Toast v7.02 keeps crashing (quiting). Tried ripping the Mac The Ripper then converting that .VOB. Toast still crashes. What is up? What should i use to convert .VOB files to .AVI or .mp4 or .mpg or whatever, on a Mac?

Hi. Great guide. Really helped get me started. I'm using Mac The Ripper and upgraded to Popcorn 2 with great results. My backups look as good as the originals. The only problem I'm having is when I burn popcorn only lets me burn at 8x. I have a MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-845 which I understand is capable of burning at 16x and I'm using Sony 16x DVD+R's. Do I need to try a different media?

jabozek,
You are fine with the DVD+R disks. Some DVD burners will convert DVD+R to DVD-ROM after burning. This process, called "bit setting", allows set-up players to think there's a DVD-ROM inserted rather than a DVD+R. DVD-ROM is a more universal format used by all comercial DVD movies and games and software. Therefore, if you have one of those DVD burners and if you have DVD+R disks, then what you burn will be more universally compatible with all kinds of DVD players (especially the older models). Don't worry, you're fine.
To check if your burner has a bit setting feature, check http://forum.rpc1.org/portal.php See what other people have experienced using the same burner, check http://www.videohelp.com/

WOW!!
QMZ Thanks - That was an ultrainformative reply - I feel like I should be bowing and saying, "I'm not worthy", ala Wayne's World - I'll check those sites and start trying to decide on compressing software - I have MTR and BurnX - but can't find anything "free" to compress with - I'm sure it's out there because Mac users seemed way intuned to backing things up - I have some pricey Criterion Collection DVD's in pristine condition and I'd like to keep the originals that way -
So if I may pick more brains there seems to be only 2 out of pocket compression/burn choices worth considering DVD Remaster (Pro?) or DVD2OneX (2?) - I am TOTALLY new at this and need the easiest - so QMZ or anyone out there can I have suggestions - I've read the thread but still can't make up my mind - hey what if one of you just write the program I would if I could - if Apple had one I would certainly purchase that but I don't think they do???????

I'm just glad I can help. Anyway, for burning software, I use Roxio Toast 7. So I can't help you decide between the 2 you selected. I've heard good things about both...they're both more customizable and flexible than Toast. Also, I've had trouble burning Dual Layer movies using Toast. Hopefully, one of these other folks here can give you a review of those 2 programs.
