k, so when in .AVI format, can toast burn (under video tab) right onto a dvd, or do they have to be converted?
Also, when I have two AVI files for the same movie, do I need to compress them into one to be burned onto one disk, or is it ok to put them both on under dvd-video?

With ffmepgx, I drop them in and convert them to mpeg-ts....but when it converts the files, it inadvertantly creats doceuments, with the extension .mpeg.ts.....then they wont burn.....can u give me some tips for ffmpegx?

convert to mpeg and then use toast to encode video ts.
i believe streamclip to join the mpegs.. then have toast encode to dvd..
i'm not on my mac.. so i cant speak of it right now..
i'm sure you can find some tutorials on the ffmpegx website..

dont worry.. i wont hate you.. i've been there before..
you got rar files.. pick up rar expander.. and those will open up fine..
chances are.. it will be bin and cue files.. and you can find the sticky now on this forum on how to do that..
the encoding with toast.. just drop the mpeg files into the video tab.. and if you want, you can make menus or just make it playing it continuously..
this is where it takes hours to encode.. just hit burn and toast does the rest.. just leave it overnite..

Hey Thelox you kick ass.
Folks, I've been busy and haven't been here much. The guide here was written a while ago and some software and things have changed a little. The concept is still basically the same.
One of these days I'll update it...

k, lox maybe you can help me out, or some other mac addict. Listen, i ahve AVI files that I want to burn onto DVD-R format. I have ffmpegx to convert to mpeg, but when I select Mpeg-ts as the type of file to change to, it creates a .ts extension on the files and it creats a document, not an mpeg file. Any ideas, ffmpegx has worked for me before, btu latley it wont convert all the AVI files correctly.

the encoding process does take a while..
i havent used it in a while.. may just want to check their site for any tutorials..

Hi guys!
I'm a brand new user of Mac and I'm not used to some computer words as well, so I could understand just part of this threat, and it seems that it is just for a G5.
If it's possible, someone can explain to me in simple words how can I burn a DVD (movie) in a Mac OS X G4 10.4.4? I have the basic in my computer and the "Toast 6 Titanium". I've tried to burn on Toast. It read well, but when it was time to write, it was asked for another blank DVD. It seemed that the Writer "Matshita DVD-R UJ-835E" wasn't recognizing the blank DVD. Does someone know what should I do?
Thanks!

Thelox, I've burned about 200 DVD's on my G5, using the information I gleaned from this thread, and I do have to say that everyone has done a fine job of giving information, although a person does have to read between the lines and get everything in its place.
I did find one thing out though, (after burning a lot of coasters, about 50 of them to be exact) that expensive media isn't always a requirement. I used Maxell DVD's and Nextech DVD. I tried burning with an active download, decoding, and burning all the same time. I tried not doing anything on my computer when I burned a DVD. But nothing seemed to work. When I put the DVD into my DVD player I would get into the moving about 15 minutes then the DVD player would lock up, the picture would pixulate, screech, and lock up.I couldn't get either one to work in my GE DVD Player. But when my son brought his cheap DVD player that I got him for Christmas a couple of years ago (can't even remember what brand it was) I don't have any problem and I can get 25 NexTech DVD's for 6.99.

Hello: Is there a separate guide for AVI to dvd, or are you referring to the rip/compress/burn guide when you suggest consulting "the guide?" Just wondering. Thanks.

this guide i dont think has AVI to dvd..
here is what another member did post.. and its a nice breakdown..
Ok i know this is a lot of encoding but this is how i get my Tv episodes (AVI) onto DVD
First start by opening toast 7...under the "Video" tab choose "Video CD"
Drop in the episodes..for some reason i find that if i try to encode more than 6 at a time they Fook up...so no mre than 6...it doesnt matter if the little coloured bar at the bottom goes into the red at this moment in time because your not going to burn the image to a
CD..you just need the .Dat files that it encodes
Now goto "File" And "Save as Disk Image"..Save it somewhere..After it has encoded, right
click and "Mount it"
Now open the Disk image and goto the "MPEGAV" Folder ...You should see your episodes
there...they will be called "AVSEQ01.DAT" files
So depending how many episodes you dropped in you'll have as many .DAT files
OK now copy the .DAT files out onto your desktop and rename them to your TV show.
So....
If you dropped in 3 lost eps
AVSEQ01.DAT=Lost Eps 01.DAT
AVSEQ02.DAT=Lost Eps 02.DAT
AVSEQ03.DAT=Lost Eps 03.DAT
And so on......
Now open up toast again and under "Video" tab choose "DVD-Video" and drop in the .DAT
files...keep your eye on the little colouerd bar so you know when your DVD is full.
Choose the menu style you want and Goto "File" and "Save As Disk Image"
Once this has encoded you will be able to burn the image to a DVD and watch on your Player
Guys i know that there must be easier ways of getting .AVI files onto DVD but this has always worked for me and with my new GigaDesigns 2GHz processor upgrade for my G4 it doesnt take long at all
About 20 mins to encode an episode to VCD then about 1 and a half hours to encode a full DVD

Thanks for the response...I saw your response earlier in this thread to mac242(1/27/06) and wasn't sure if those steps were used in combination with the guide or separately...but I'll try the steps you provided (yes, I'm trying to burn episodes of "The Office") and let you know the results...Thanks again for your help

Hi thelox714.
I'll try those brands that you said. I was using TDK.
Just to complete my previous message: When the movie was ready to be written, the Toast ejected the TDK recordable disc and the alert was:
"Please insert a recordable disc.
Matshita DVD-R UJ-835E"
I'll let you know if will work with another brand.
Thanks!

you may wanna wait til sunday for the media.. if you check out this thread.. there are threads about media sales:
http://forums.afterdawn.com/forum_view.cfm/47
i only use to hang out here in the mac side.. but that one has gotten me some good discounts on quality media..
and yes.. dont mess with the tdk stuff. you can test the stuff using dvd media inspector to tell you who the mana. on your tdk is. most of their stuff is made by them directly.. but not all that good.

I'm sure you've been asked this before but PLEASE help me..I have mac the ripper and I want to just check to see if everything copied correctly before I bother downloading the other programs I need. I have three dvd's that I've copied and now I have three folders but don't see to have a way of actually watching them...do I have to compress first??

ok..
each movie is in there.. each folder should contain a "VIDEO_TS" and "AUDIO_TS".
you dont need to compress them if you're just going to watch it. you only need to do that if you want to burn them. but then again, if you have a dual layer burner and dual layer media.. it does not requre compression.
to watch the folders that you have:
1. open dvd player
2. hit apple+o
3. select the VIDEO_TS folder.
4. hit play.
thats it....
just post if you have anymore questions.
