What disadvantages are there?

There is really no reason not to update if your not going to use Homebrew. But even if you do use Homebrew you can pretty much do everything on 4.1 firmware that you can do on 3.2 firmware.

You already mentioned the homebrew disadvantage, which
alone is enough reason not to update. For Systemmenu 3 also
do exist a lot of nice hacks which do currently not
exist for Version 4.

So in general never change a running system
without urgend need.

And in fact there is no need at all to change to a version
above 3.2. Version 4.x has no advantages. The SD loading
is a fake that just shortens the livetime of your NAND.

You didn't give any real advantages 3.2 firmware has over 4.1 firmware. You actually pointed out an advantage that 4.1 has over 3.2 which is loading VC/WiiWare from SD Card.

If anyone wants to use Homebrew on 4.1 it is just a few simple steps to let that happen.

So I ask again what are the advantages 3.2 has over 4.1 when pretty much everything (expect for maybe starfall) can be used on 4.1 firmware. But even then Preloader .29 can do what Starfall does on 4.1 firmware so even that isn't an advantage.

You can either not read or do not want to understand.
In both cases I can not help you further.

That is not an advantage. That´s a fake.
The games do not start from SD. The Menu copys
them first to the NAND and then starts them from
the internal flash.

That is unnecesseray if one stays at 3.x.

No it can not. The number of systemhacks currently
available for 4.x is greatly reduced.

I am no missionary... If one does not agree with me that´s fine.

Name the system hacks that are reduced.

Your claiming the system hacks are greatly reduced so I am just asking you to name them. I am curious to know what you use that is so important to stay at 3.2 firmware instead of updating and using updated and current homebrew available.

As well if you want to stay at 3.2 firmware then you need to manually install IOS so newer games can play. So your doing extra steps anyway so why not just update to latest firmware.

Your advising users to stay at 3.2 firmware just because you don't keep up with what is currently available.

@mik30

how can i do that on a disc without using a homebrew channel??

@larrylje

What firmware?? Wii or Wiikey? I was adviced not to update the Wii itself due to the Wiikey... Is it even possible to update a wiikey? if so: what (possible) risks could there be for my Wii itself?? (Bricking etc.)

Thanks!!!

The Wii system update will not brick your system or mess up the Wiikey 2. You are safe to perform the update as long as your updating via the settings in the system or the same region game disc. I would advise to do the update. If you don't want to listen to me then that is your choice!

I have been in the scene for years and have done both Hardmods and Softmods with 4.1 firmware and they all work perfectly fine. I as well have a few guides that I have written for members in this forum. So I am comfortable telling you that updating to 4.1 firmware will not brick or effect the Wiikey 2.

So all settings will remain on my Wii and i can use Internet and such as I always could?? Sorry I ask it again but its still kinda unclear for me... But do ytou think as soon as I hit vresion 4.1 on my Wii I won't get those black screens from games??? Btw how about internet updates on my Wii? Are those oke to?

Thanks for the replies and advice so far!!

Ps:

@mik30 what was that about IOS??? is that something i can change on the iso of the game itself or something???

Yes everything should work fine.

Think of an IOS as an Independent Operating System. There are multiple IOS installed to the Wii system. Each game will use a certain IOS to play. If the game needs to use an IOS that is not installed then the game will not start because it needs that IOS. In order to install the IOS you need to install it manually using WAD Manager (which is what mik30 is suggesting) or update the system to the latest system update (which is what I am suggesting).

I have read for no less than 3 hrs today many topics in these forums. I have come to the conclusion that YOU guys are the experts in backing up the wii games.

Let me tell you where I am and beg of you to direct me from here. This is certainly a complex process no matter what version(s) of products one is using. I'm assuming it will get easier with time and experience.

That said, I have a version 3.4u. I have completed (SUCCESSFULLY mind you) the soft mod installation of the Homebrew Channel via the SD card. It works fine.....can load some crappy games and such....

This is where I get confused as there are so many tuts out here that I don't know which one to follow.

I have networked only the Internet Channel on the wii to my router/network and nothing else but it does work.

Now, where do I go from here?? I have all read all sorts of instructions. I just need help.

Thank you!!

re your questions to larryjle

"What firmware?? Wii or Wiikey? I was adviced not to update the Wii itself due to the Wiikey... Is it even possible to update a wiikey? if so: what (possible) risks could there be for my Wii itself?? (Bricking etc.)"

I have a genuine Wiikey 1 running 1.9s and have taken every update that Nintendo has put up, by disc or online with no problem.

I do not typically run out of region backups (but I have with no problem) which eliminates bricking by out of region updates. the few out of region games that I have run were scrubbed of the updates first.

As far as updating a Wiikey, there have been no updates since 1.9s.

I think that you are falling prey to superstition and some bad advice. Larryjle knows what he is talking about. IMHO his advice is beyond reproach.

I agree totally larrylje knows his stuff.

I have Wiikey 2, 1.2 config disk installed.

I have homebrew channel, 4.1 System Software, USB loader installed.

Everything works great and I shop on the Wii.

@ ltisthesh

It depends upon what else you want your Wii to do, as to how anyone can guide on a tutorial.

I'm sorry. Maybe I didn't explain my intentions. I thought it was understood b/c of the topic we are inside in the forums. I am wishing to back up my Wii games.

Currently I have only a few --- Lara Croft Tomb Raider, Big League Sports, and some High School Musicals that the kids love. But they are harsh on them despite my beckoning. I'm just trying to insure the games I've already bought by making backups.

As I mentioned before, I have done the soft mod and do have Homebrew installed. That's where I am stuck. THank you.

To make a backup of your original you need to
1. get a Software to create a backup
2. have a proper dvd drive in your pc
3. Burn the Backup to a DVD-R with a burning Software

To Nr.1:
You can either use Hektosoft´s Hektograph or Rawdump or Friidump.
Hektograph is a comercial product that also includes a
burning software and can do a lot more than just read Wii
Originals. Rawdump is financed by a buildin Wiinja Add.
Friidump is a command line tool, but it is freeware.
The easiest one is the first solution.

To Nr.2:
Get as PC DVD Drive tghe following Type:
HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8164B

There may be other GDR81xx drives that work,
but the 8164B has been prooven with all three
softwares named under Nr.1.

To Nr.3:
On a softmodded Wii get DVD-R not DVD+R!
Burn at 4x max because many Wii drives are of
poor quality so that they may not read discs
if they are burned at higher speeds.
Use Hektosoft´s Hektograph (the evaluation
version can burn) or Nero or any other Software
that accepts ISO Images and records "Disc At Once"
mode on DVD-R.

Please confirm: I am looking for this specific LG DVD drive to only READ my Wii game disk. It can and will be burned on a blank DVD-R in another burner. I need this drive to read my disc and then "dump" the data to be burned by the software onto the blank in another drive? Just confirming as I'm taking this step by step.

Thank you!

Hello I am new to the Wii system..
I have been trying to get through this entire thread and trying to find a drive that will work with the games and I have yet to find one all the old threads show links to drives that are no longer available. I currently have (2) pioneer drives & (3) Sony drives and I know that none of these work, for me at least. I already downloaded rawdump 2.0 and that was no help. Any assistance would be helpful.

Thanks in advance.

Drives are available, but not new. You will have to find them on the secondary market.

Somewhere on this board is a very long thread with the trials and tribulations of people trying to find alternate drives.

If you want to save yourself time in trial and error experimenting, which is probably useless since it is a firmware exploit that allows the LG drives to read Wii games under software control.

Look for a used LG-816x.

O.k. back again. Wanting to try something out first. I have a good copy of the ISO files needed for the new Madden 10 game sent to me from a friend. I have Img Burn installed. Next step: Using Img Burn I load the ISO (perfectly correct size from what all I've read -- at 4,699,979,776) into the queue. I load the blank DVD in the tray (4.7 GB, single layer) ....it all loads and looks like it will burn.....I click on "Write" icon and I get this error message:

"There doesn't appear to be enough space on the disc to burn this image.
Image size: 2,294,912 sectors (4,482 MB)
Disc size: 12,272 sectors (23 MB)"

What is my problem?

Thank you.

Hello,

I was looking for a way to backup my sons games, he's autistic and doesn't take the best care of them, After reading the information in this guide I ordered an LG GDR-Portable 2.0 USB Slim Drive from . A few days later, an HL-DT-STDVD-ROM GDR8082N0106 came is the mail.

The problem was that the drive would give me the "error, you my have a faulty drive" message every time I put a Wii disc in the unit.
I sent the vendor an email telling them of my issue and asking for help.

I spent half the night reading everything I could about the drive and how I might fix the problem. I was ready to try to flash it with IBM's 0L03 firmware, then I got the reply from my email to the vendor.

They sent me a nice note with 2 help files and a copy of rawdump 2.0. Their suggestion was to open the drive tray and place a wii disc on the tray but not to close it, then hit the rawdump button to start dumping wait a few seconds then close the drive. it took me a few tries to get the timing right but I'm dumping my first disc as I type.

anyways thanks for the guide and all the info
Ivan

update, the first dump took almost 4hrs, and the file size was just a bit smaller then what I've read it should be.

so I'm trying another dump with a game that is less damagedand I'm trying with rawdump 2.1 this time.

it's telling me i have about 4hrs and 30mins left so I'll try burning them both in the morning and see if any of them take.

I've lost hope in saveing the older games do to damage.

would a few light scratchs be to much? or does the game I'm dumping have to be brand new?

okey so it WORKS

burned the iso to a memorex dvd-r at 2x speed using Imgburn and my son is playing the rip as I type.

like I said the iso is just a bit smaller then the size it should be but it works, I did get a little bit if lag on the opening cs to the game but other then that all good

the size of the file is 4,589,824kb as i understand it the file should be 4,699,979,776 is that something that happens a lot?
