the coolers over power the socket, and they spin faster then the 360 ones, they can break the springs on the ones inside

How ironic. This same issue just occured with me.

Did you end up getting your 360 replaced Domreis?

I just called and dropped a note into NYKO. I hope this gets replaced just like they guarantee it.

Well, I've gone through the 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation Nyko Intercooler and all have had noise issues after a couple of months of use. I have to turn off the 360 and then turn it on again in order for the noise to stop.

I'm going to test this combo to see if this works out better for me.

I've been eying it at GameStop for a couple of weeks now. I saw this design on the web last year and was surprised that Pelican was the one to get the license.

Hey Domreis, how long did it take you for NYKO to replace your 360??

I am hoping that I get a call back from them tomorrow, since they are only open Mon-Fri.

Anyone want to comment on the fail rate of the 360 now? now that we know its 30+ % its not likely that the inter cooler is this while problem.

Reality is cruel, the fail rate estimates are between 10 and 30%,why else do some people have to RMA more than 3 consoles?

My question/comment/thought is with the fail rate very high is it the cooler thats really damaging it or is it just that with such a high fail rate it seems like the cooler is doing it.

The reason peoples 360 consoles fail is that some of the NYKO intercoolers are "dodgy"..

BUT most of all is that people do not take care of their console, i have had myne since release, i look after it and havnt had a problem, i know many people that have had no problems also,

people just dont care, they pile DVD players and fat PS3s on there 360 console, put it up against a wall and stack things either side of the xbox, not putting the console on a hard surface and not putting the huge power brick on a hard sureface and in an open area all this doesnt allow cool airflow through the system making the console overheat and break giving them the 3 red lights, then sending it back to M$, posting comments on afterdawn and youtube things like that saying M$ is rubbish the consoles are rubbish..blah..blah..blah when it isnt M$ its the owners of the console, i mean you wouldnt pay a decent amount of money for a brand new car and then driving it through mud wheel spinning, scuffing the wheels etc.. its just bad caring of the console, it p*sses me of wen people say that its due to bad manufacturing.

I am sorry the sheer fact even MS has owned up to it proved the 360 has a higher than normal fail rate due to overheating, you can blame some things on consumers sure but in the end this is not one of them the system is simple designed badly the up side is the new 65nm chips are coming with a 45-60% reduction in heat the design should hold up because thats what is breaking them..

Well if the 65nm chips still dont reduce the overheating by high numbers then its proven its the owners.. any way we will soon find out, is the 65nm chip used in the 360 elite,

im switching to PS3, keepin my 360 for Halo 3 thts all its intended 4.

:P

^^

Oh I just recalled the 65NM is NOT in the current elites....

anyway it is simply bad design and when you halve the heat the design will be enough to stop it from imploding on itself.

well what do you think? with there fail rate so high is it the nyko cooler, the 360 or combination there of?

If the board breaks from overheating it could cause enough of a fault to fry the cooler ,I am more interested in the technological aspects of it(sicne the towel trick can to a point re solder the joints/chips and help it run better altho thats more likely to be myth, but the heat issues causing the low lead count solder to break is more likely, then under certain board fault conditions it could surge the USB) than fanboy chest thumbing.

i must say that it's pretty lame that MS charges almost $500 and still didn't drop the die size to 65nm... sad indeed.

on a side note, both of my 360s are cooled by the Antec Notebook Cooler and i also have a 4" desk fan blowing air directly into the intake vents on the side of the 360 (while it's laying on its belly - which is the better way to sit the console)... it's sufficient cooling if you ask me.

so last night my bro and i got on the 360 to play GoW... set up a server and got 5 others to join for a total of 7 ppl. hit START and 3-5 seconds after the round started while everyone was rushing the system just FROZE - dead freeze, no repetitive audio artifacts/garbled-sounds... had to restart the console.

both of my 360 premiums are cooled much better than stock cooling, and they both occasionally still freeze.

i wouldn't ONLY blame the Nyko Intercooler as the reason the 360s die. I had a Nyko for maybe a month or two on ONE of my 360s when i first got it, but haven't had one on there for about 5-6 months now.

and both of my power bricks are in an open area... both of my 360s are not greatly affected by other appliances' heat outputs.

if i had the time, i'd watercool them... but the Antec Notebook Cooler (to keep the base cool, where the mobo is), and a desk fan as intake... these should be more than enough (figuratively speaking, STOCK cooling should be enough on ANY appliance).

Ya even with the extra cooling the 360 is still fickle, as for the price drop even at 400 its reasonable for what you get,I would really like it to be 300 with the 20GGB HDD but at least its not 600.... when Sony puts the PS3 to 400-480 MS might drop theirs 50-100.

with this lil device I shall get finally get a 360 when the new chips come :P
