@L-Burna. Pretty similar to what I did. If you check out movie 36, you'll notice that it's the intro movie (I think that's PSS_35 on your extraction). I tried already demuxing and downsampling, searching the original in the hex editor, cutting the original out and repasting new copy.... freezes. I think that the element of the movie on the layer-0 vol acts as some kind of integrity check.
Incidently you could get rid of the longest movie, and the epson folder (NTSC version) and have enough room, but when I try this it still freezes.

Well the epson folder has module files inside of it(irx files),so you probably want to keep these files in.The files I really noticed in the movie files are two movie files(PSS_3,and PSS_38).The third movie file is the intro of the game for me.I think if you go by the HDD rip kit like you said we might have a chance.I was looking at a HDD kit not that long ago that talks about fixing the header of the elf file CORE.GT4,which also has to be done.It is alot of work,but hard to say how long it would take to be honest until some sort of method works.I am pretty positive it is possible,just have to keep messing with different techniques and something will occur man ;).

My last post disappeared. Did I say something wrong?
@L-Burna. The toolboy patch boots as good as the toxic one when applied. I used it on a rebuild using a downsized GT4L1.VOL. This is the backup disk I use instead of my original as my PS2 struggles with the original badly, so it's being tested well. Arcade mode still doesn't work though and I had to disable the intro movie to get it to load.

Well what I was trying to say is build your ISO file for HDD first,then start to rip from there.That is what I was trying to tell you,because you have to manually fix some of the bytes on the header.

Simpsim1 I have an off key question for you, I followed your thread from the old closed gt4 thread.
Quote: Here's one for the pirates and the cheaters. The only help you'll get from me here...
You can download a gamesave from http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/ps2/save/gran_turismo_4_d.max
Info on how to get save onto memcard can be found at http://www.forumcommunity.net/?t=903119&view=getlastpost
BE WARNED though, this is a real cheat.... 100% completed with gold cups all round lol. Pretty much spoils the game but the formula one car is the dogs bo***cks!!
Needless to say it dosn't work for me. One problem is when I try to fix the LBA on the downloaded save file fron inside cdgenps2 it says invalid file name. Now if I go ahead and burn it and load it up it will start working but stops half way through while it's showing the loading processes. If anyone can offer some help it would be nice. Thanks in advance.

@L-Burna. Ahh! I get what you mean now. I'll have a greater delve into this in the morning. I'm hoping that you're better at this than me because my knowledge at this level is somewhat limited.
@Burnt-Out. You're doing that wrong. You need to make a file called "DUMMY" (No Extension). I just used notepad and made a file with five spaces, saved it as "DUMMY.ZZZ" and then renamed it to remove the file extension (I used ZZZ as an extension so that it didn't save as a text file and because it's not used for anything else). It is this dummy file that you fix the LBA and not the save, which needs to be left intact. The Dummy file is just to stop the PS2's drive from spinning up too quickly when you don't have enough data on the disk.
Just one thing I put in my earlier disappearing post. The "Split screen" that crowy mentioned earlier is actually two versions of the same movie sequence... Well the intro movie is anyway. There are also 2 soundtracks when you Demux it with PSS Plex (Alt-1.wav and Alt-2.wav). There's no discernable differences between the two soundtracks, but there are some subtle ones in the movies. I think it's just lettering stuff though, probably to do with language versions. Trouble is, when you remux, you can only use one wav file.

@Burnt-Out,
This worked for me.One thing I had to do though is edit the .cnf file to work with PAL.Looks like this:
BOOT2 = cdrom0:\PS2MENU.ELF;1
VER = 1.00
VMODE = PAL
if you are NTSC use the one in the instructions.
Also I made 2 copies one with a dummy file one without, they both work fine so I don't think the dummy file is really neccessary.(The ps2 didn't make any weird noises)Let us know exactly what you did.If you follow the instructions you shouldn't have a problem.

Thanks guys for the replys, but heres my issue in more detail. I have an NTSC system for starters. When I load up the disk with my save file on it this is what I get:
Welcome to PS2Menu v2.66
please wait....
McBrown sbv-patches
Load IOP modules from EE Memory
Loading SIO2MAN
Loading MCMAN
Loading MCSERV
Loading PADMAN
Loading poweroff.irx 2137bytes
Loading filexio.irx 8029bytes
Loading ps2ated.irx 10961bytes
Loading ps2hdd.irx 26573bytes
Loading ps2fs.irx 53957bytes
Loading cdvd.irx 33647bytes
Loading ps2retfs.irx 17793bytes
Then it just stops. I'm sure I'm doing this right (I Hope). If someone has a more detailed step by step that would be cool. Also I don't have a PS2 hard-drive, which I don't know if thats needed for this to work or not. All I want to do is put a downloaded save on my memory card with as little equipment as needed seeing as all I have is my PC w/ dvd burner, Ps2 v7 w/ flip top and Swap Magic 2.0 set. I have no probs backing up games just this little pain
And thanks to Simpsim1 for the help on the dummy file, I was using Dummy file creator to make my dummies, now I just do it manualy. Thanks for any Help

@Burn-Out,not sure which instructions you used but they are here.
http://www.forumcommunity.net/?t=903119&view=getlastpost Also as I stated earlier it works for me without the dummy file so no need to fix lba.Also if you have any more questions about this, post on one of the other ps2 backup threads otherwise this one will end up off topic again:)Sorry just noticed these are the instructions you already used.Just follow them and you should be fine.

Hi im going to try and get the GT4 on a DVD5 using "ALKOHOL & ZOEYCHICO COMBO METHOD" but in the guide it says to use Alkohol's settings for DVD Decrypter but the thing is i have read everything in the "GT4 Burning Issues" thread and havent been able to find it anywhere. I was wondering if anyone could point in the the direction of what the settings DVD Decrypter should be?
Thanks

I think we're getting well off topic here guys. I know there are still issues with backing up, but these issues are pretty much covered in thje last two threads. You really need to read carefully through them because there's a lot of information there. Another reason for me saying this is that the old thread was closed because people were asking the same questions. This thread has been specifically started with the intent of developing a DVD-5 solution that will play arcade mode as well as GT mode.
Having said that, I'm a generous guy and will gladly answer PMs if there are any queries you need answering (Within reason though!!!).

I have no idea how to do what you guys are talking about, but, I read somewhere that your altering the movie files...making them smaller. This in the end causes them to lock up the ps2. If you do not want the video files left on there due to space, why not replace them with the same sample rate, frame rate as the ones they have on there orginaly. Make them extrealy small and when the ps2 loads them it will end alot faster but should run correctly. This may cause the ps2 to NOT lock up solving that problem. It's just a guess though.
I'm thinking the ps2 "as read above" checks to validate if the movie files are correct. "by checking sample rate ect..." and perhaps that idea will stop the ps2 from locking up.

Basically, the PS2 will look for a .pss file and play it as a movie. It doesn't make a difference what bitrate it is encoded at (I've tried substituting one for another of same bitrate and it doesn't work). The problem I believe, is a little thing known as linking. Some of it definately seems to be byte offset based and that's what's going to prove to be a big b**ch if that's the case. It's not like you can really debug this on the PC. How much easier would it be if you could?

2 questions
why not just remove the movies entirely?
why isn't there a GT4 like GOW tool?

GOW has a different file structure as far as I'm aware. What I could really do with is some sort of debugging tool, that would highlight any bad links. I'm probably living in a complete dreamworld now.

Well removing the movie files is alot harder than it looks to be honest,because you have to do in a hex editing aspect.The reason there is no GT4 extractor/rebuilder out like GOW is the fact that the elf file CORE.GT4 doesn't contain a header to it.So it is not really leaving us that much information on all the files or the structures of the .VOL files.It is a completely different munge file type as GOW,although the layout looks the same they both are alot different.If you open up the TOC file in GOW with wordpad you can see all the file types and movies in the munge files,since it has a header for the elf.On the other hand we are kinda left in the dark with the file types in the .VOL files.We all know that GT4 contains movies and music,so .pss and .ss2 music files are bound to show up.Other than this nobody is really sure what other file types are in the .VOL files without more indepth encryption of the elf file CORE.GT4.So we actually need someone to figure out the CORE.GT4 file so we can extract/rebuild the .VOL files.The locations and file types are unknown for GT4 until someone can figure out the elf file.That is pretty much the best explanation I can give you on why there isn't an extractor/rebuilder tool for GT4.I have been using CubeMediaPlayer for GT4 finding the locations of the movies and music,so this is not a problem the music and movie locations.The only thing left is figuring out the rest of the files contained in the .VOL files.If you want you can check out this site for a brief description on getting the music from GT4 http://www.japsniper.com/jamie/jamie-gt4-music.htm .The videos can be found with CubeMediaPlayer and extracted also,so make sure to look further into this if you are going to deal with the media in GT4.

@L-Burna. In a post GT4 Official Thread, you (Or somebody else, I can't remember) said that someone had made some progress with decrypting the CORE.GT4 file. If I remember, the link was dead when I tried it. I'm sure it was sonix or darthi8nt or someone like that. Can you remember anything about that?
I would imagine toolboy would be a good resource for this project, as it's his patches we're using anyway.

Yeah true Toolboy said he was using MGS:Substance for his patches.I was doing a similiar approach awhile back,but never really got anywhere with the patches I made.After looking at his tutorial for HDD though,there is a spot where you manually edit bytes dealing with the header.The last I heard from Darth he said he was trying to get in touch with someone that knows a great deal on elf files,but never actually got a reply.I am as clueless as everyone else as to who he was referring to though.Neness thought he had decrypted some of the file,but Darth said it wasn't really decrypted.Then Darth mentioned creating a custom function for extracting the .VOL files.Nothing really has worked though so far on extracting from the .VOL files,except for Darth's vids extractor.I am thinking Sonix has a great deal of knowledge on messing with it,but that is a guess.The last thing I heard from Sonix was making a new Apache program,other than that it has pretty much died out.I think after the Toxic patch program and the HDD fixes came out,everybody that was messing with the game has pretty much gave up on it.I could be wrong on this,but like you mentioned man alot of people have pretty much just gave up on messing with it.If you can get in touch with Toolboy simpsim let me know ok man,because we might be on to something ok bro.

@L-Burna. I've never had any contact with toolboy personally unfortunately, but I think this is one of the guys we need. Basically, I read through GT4 official thread several times (I would advise anyone working on this project to do the same) and then just got Googling (I still say it's amazing how much you can find out by Googling).
@neosin you probably have the wrong save. You need a save from a european game. Due to the nature of transferring data from homebrew cds, the memory card will say it's corrupted data, but it still should load. Get your saves from here http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/ps2/save/561066.html and make sure you get one with "EU" next to it. BTW you've obviously not read rules about posting email addys. Very silly thing to do!!!

Hey simpsim1 check out on the first page of this thread alright bro.Look at the locations I gave you in Hex for the movie files.Now build your image without fixing it for HDD alright before you continue on.Once you have done this open up WinHex and look at the top of the program where it says Position.Scroll down to where it says Go to Offset and type in the beginning of the file.An example of the first movie would be like this:
Start/End offsets for the first movie file PSS_0.pss:
A1D8B000-A3713004 where the very first part of the movie file should have this text at the very right ...ºD. and the end of the movie file should have this text ...¹ take note of this alright man.Once you have found the first offset right click on your mouse and press Beginning of Block now search for the end offset and when you find it right click and press End of Block.It will now highlight the movie file,now just click on Edit at the very top of WinHex and go to the option where it says Copy Block then it gives you more options.Just select the option into New File.It will bring up a menu where you can browse to save your file,just find your location you want to save.Then type this in:
Since it is your first movie file you should type in
PSS_0.pss and make sure when you save it ends with *.PSS
This is an example of what I am doing simpsim1 to delete the .PSS file go to the very top where it says Edit and select the option Remove after you have highlighted your movie file.

@L-Burna. I have done exactly this myself already. It's rather like splicing cassette tape. I've tried using both the VOL file and directly from the ISO itself. The game will still work when you do it but with the same results as I outlined before. I'm just waiting on a reply to an email I've sent to see if I can elaborate on the CORE.GT4 file anymore.
