@L-Burna. Don't forget that you may have to patch the first few bytes of the header of the CORE.GT4 once it's recompressed (Not sure exactly why but mine didn't work last time without the header being patched) All instructions in the HDD kit seem to be ok here I think. As I said before, the CORE.GT4 file is compressed with one of the best archiving tools out there. GZip is open source compression software which was mainly developed for the Linux community. Obviously the devlopers found an excellent use for it here... and I suspect tried to hide the fact from the likes of us by altering a few bytes in the header.

I was reading a couple of things online about rips earlier and one thing I read was about a game called Kessen. Basically this guy has been ripping this game for a CDR but encountered freeze with the movies. I'll just paste in the quote below. Now I'm not saying that this is a problem with GT4, but it might be another thing to look at if the solution here doesn't work.
Quote:
Kessen - Now this one is weird, and I could really use some help. Using either the PAL or NTSC DVD, attempting to rip it without alteration resulted in a CD that made funny noises during booting (and would not load). After applying the change by Kalisto (PAL - offset 00174BAE from '4014' to '0010', or NTSC - offset 0017613E from '4014' to '0010', which is basically changing a conditional BNE to an unconditional BEQ), the game would boot but it would ignore all movie files, and would not even try to play them if they were present. What's more, the PSS filenames aren't referenced in the executable or ALLDATA.BIN, which leads me to believe that the game is attempting to play the movies by their LBA, and the change by Kalisto was to disable the movie playing routines in the executable. This one probably needs an experienced debugger to look at (and I'm barely a novice :( ).
Could this be why the old GTFS tool never found movies perhaps?

I think the reason the old GTFS tool doesn't work is mainly from the code.It actually can extract some of the files, but the main issue is that they are fake files. The tool has an old TOC extract listing,so it is outdated from the new code applied to GT4.I heard Neness mention that someone with alot of experience with ASM code could definately decypher the file, problem is to be honest finding someone that knows alot about ASM code to look at it.All I know is he said leering7 was someone that could definately decypher the elf file.Once someone decyphers this elf file we will have a extracter/rebuilder tool that would probably look like the GOW tool.I will keep working on the elf file like you mentioned simpsim1 from the HDD method fixing the header and working from there on.

I think we will have to work on it manually like we are doing so far, because alot of us don't have the programming skills like they are talking about.I don't have any knowledge of PS2 programming, but I wish I did.

Me too L-Burna. I'm fairly knowledgeable and able to pick things up fairly quickly, but I lack the raw programming skills necessary to debug this project in a manner that I would prefer. So it's basically down to relying on others and a little digging in the dark.

I'm gonna try from the ripped rather than the downsampled approach, just eliminitaing the checks and seeing what turns up. If there is an LBA issue with the movies, then I'll just have to try and deal with that as it happens.

Well,I looked inside the elf file and already seen a spot we can edit for the opening movie, since it seems to freeze at this spot.I am just looking through and trying to figure out the movie spots.I definately found the spot where the opening movie is at though.By editing the spots for the movies the game should get past these locations,as you mentioned earlier the elf file has to be edited also so it doesn't call for certain parts from the munge files.I will keep messing with it and see if I can figure it out.
Just curious to know exactly what proggy you're using for this (And what to look for).

@$$$$. Thread is not gonna die till we've exhausted all the options. I've had another coaster using the disk check method. I'm just looking over the core.gt4.elf we made using the soz.exe tool. Most of it is gobbledegook, but if you look towards the end using Winhex, there's a lot of text there... Just gonna take a few days of number crunching and puzzling to see if I can recognise anything here. Anyone who's been following this, feel free to have a go if you want.

@Playguy, sounds like you've not used Toxic patch to me mate. You need it to get past the disclaimer/copyright screen. Read the last thread as stated on the very first post in this thread. For those that haven't read the first post and just skip to the last, this particular thread is specifically working towards getting a ripped version to work. Sorry for going on like this but it's not helping... It's just going to make the thread longer and as off topic as the last one ended up getting.

Hey simpsim1 wats up bro, this is what I am trying to sort out at the moment.I am trying to build a .IML file with $ony Cd/Dvd Rom,but am having issues with this keeps giving error messages about sectors exceeding the limit.I used WinHex to look at the elf file bro,it is close to the bottom of the elf file when you see the intro text.Sorry I didn't write down the location, but I am positive it is close to very end of the file.Gnie and Gherudos are helping me sort out the .IML error messages.Sorry for the late reply man, been getting ready for 4th of July ;).

Hi simpsim 1. I read the majority of your post in this thread and the other GT4 thread. I want to wish you good luck with trying to burn the game to a DVD5. My situation is that I can not play an original copy of GT4 on my version 7 ps2 (model# SCPH-39001) with a messiah 2 modchip. Do you know the reason why? Thanks for your help.

@L-Burna. The error you're getting sounds like it may be due to the size of your VOL file. If it's over 4Gb you'll get an error because there's a 4Gb limit on any one file in an ISO and I believe you said you had joined the two vol files together. I noted reading through the ELF file that both vol files are mentioned in it as well (Offset 0058BC60). There's also references to "Advertise" and "Mpeg" folders, so the munge file is going to be fairly similar to GT3.

@bobbio206, There are boot issues with some Messiah chips on this game. Some of them absolutely refuse to boot the dual layer disks and cannot be disabled. Your only options are either to remove it physically (I'm sure you don't want to do that), or to use a backup option as described in this or the previous thread. Alternatively, try and find out if there are any firmware upgrades for your chip.

Gnie helped me solve my problem, all I needed was a limitation patch for Dvd.Your right though, you have to use a limitation patch or it won't work ;).

Ok please forgive me if this is a stupid question, but is it possible to back up GT4 with only arcade mode working, and not Gran turismo mode working? (thus having the game in 2 parts)

someones probably asked this before, so if it can't, why not?

Making an image for DVD-5 with just arcade mode, should be like this.
1.)Use the option in DvdDecrypter Mode~ISO~Read and save your image to your desktop.
2.)Once you have your ISO,should be close to 4.9Gig something in size.Use the ToxicDualLayerPatching program and let it patch the image file.
3.)After the ToxicDualLayerPatcher is done patching your image(make sure it says it patched the image file though alright).Use another program called WinHex,has to be registered in order to use an option off of it.
4.)Open up your ISO image with WinHex,and at the very top of the program go to where it says Tools~File Tools~Split. So you should be clicking on the Split option,it will bring up a browse window.Just select your ISO you made and patched earlier with the ToxicDualLayerPatcher. After you select your image,it will bring up another menu that says Split File and below it shows a white window and to the right of the white windows will list Bytes,KB,MB,and GB.Just select the GB option, and Type in the white window 4.3 then save your split image for example:GT4.ISO.Once it is done with splitting the image up to 4.3Gig in size,it will ask you to save again for the rest of the file just an example:GT5.ISO.Just save it something different, then once you are done delete the second file WinHex made GT5.ISO.You will be able to tell by the size of the files, which one you need.
5.)Now you can burn your Split ISO with DvdDecrypter or any program you prefer.

The reason the Arcade mode doesn't work to be honest when you use the Split option in WinHex.It cuts the image,so alot of the information for the rest of the game doesn't get any access. There is no other way that I know of,unless extracting from the munge files and rebuilding.

@L-Burna, I was going to say exactly that. Unfortunately, we can only access GT Mode using a cutdown DVD-5 at the moment. I did try a little flirtation with a version with just the GT4L1.VOL along with the main files, but this just froze (Needs to see both VOLs or at least the start of them). The version you speak of using winhex is the one I think most people will be using who are not using the Dual Layer disk for whatever reason.

I have been busy removing some more checks today. I'm using an older version of DVD Check Scan which picks out more possible checks than the 3.6 version (I did say "Possible checks". It could be that some of them aren't actually checks but what's a few more coasters if it's for a good cause). I've left in both vols and just worked on cutting down the layer-1 file. I hope to have some good news soon. I'm also studying the text at the bottom end of the core.gt4.elf file which looks rather interesting. In particular, I'm wondering about some text from offset 00504081. Looking at the hex, there are several hex values which are all suffixed with "3F". I'll need to extract the original VOLs again to check but I'm wondering if these could be byte offsets for the munge files. Futher down there are more blocks that look possible too. After those values, you're getting towards the point where all that text is. Just something else to try.

I'm thinking of doing a different approach, but still deals with editing the video files or audio simpsim1.Check this out alright, the first .VOL file GT4.VOL has all the audio files in the game. The second .VOL GT4L1.VOL has all the movies on it,so I went and found all the locations for the media on both .VOL in hex seperated instead of looking at it as an image file itself and am trying to cut them out this way. Then join both together as one file,so it doesn't exceed its limit once you compile it.It would be dealing with Sony Cd/Dvd Rom Generator 2.00 and using the limitation patch to make the .IML files,so you can make the image with iml2iso made by Gnie.I see what you mean with the Elf file,it contains alot of places with possible checks.Hard to say if modifying the checks would solve the booting issue,it could but you can't zero out the values. The program Dvd Scan that you where using simpsim1 I would stick with it bro,as it will modify the bytes without replacing it with zero bytes.I haven't had time to mess with the Elf file at the moment, but just haven't had the time. Will look at it later on today, and see if I can spot anything else alright bro.I think we are making some success bro, just some time to deal with.I will see what else I can do to help out,but the Elf file is hard to read as mentioned earlier it has parts that are coded in foreign language that could be something very important.I am not really certain about the parts that are coded in foreign language bro,but the parts that are coded in English I can pick up.

You obviously have been out of touch for a while jangalang. DVD-5 with GT mode only has been in circulation for a while. Read the last thread! Link on the first post of this one.

@Everyone. I am taking a couple of days out of this one due to the London terror attacks but I shall be back soon, have no fear!

Okay, I see you've been patient. All is OK now and I'm back on this thread. I apologise for my absence, there was an issue with a missing friend but all is sorted now.

Has anyone made any progress yet?
