The point of this thread is to carry on where we left off on the last thread with regards to getting a full DVD-5 backup, including arcade mode.
Of course, most people will now be happy enough with the backups they already have, be it DVD-9 or the partial DVD-5, but I'm still not satisfied, nor, I believe are quite a few other people. I may be wrong in which case this thread will die a quick and painless death.
My opinions come with no warranty whatsoever, but are totally open-source, so you can reverse engineer or decompile them as you see fit. All other rights reserved.

I would start off by applying the Toxic patch to the image,then continue on from there.The reason for applying the patch would be to fix the issues of reading.After this step I don't think it is possible unless the CORE.GT4 file is decrypted.If you extract both layers of the game whether it be the first or second layer there is not that much that can be tooken out unless unpacking the .VOL files.In order to get a full DVD-5 rip that is what it would take to be honest.Add up the two .VOL files and see what you come up with,you will notice it is actually big even without the other files.If you can somehow manage to keep the size limit down to 4.35Gig you should be ok or maybe overburn it onto a disc at 4.7Gig.

Glad I've still got support. I'm trying to get some more info on the hex formation of this vol file. One of my friends says it looks similar to the makeup of an ISO image. I would suspect that if that were the case, the image would need to have its header patched to be able to edit it with the likes of apache.
I do have to say though, this exercise will be pretty pointless unless there are others able to help out with some hex editing and archiving stuff. I'm just one person at the end of the day and I think the final solution will need to be a team effort.
I'm currently PS2less whilst I'm having a repair done, so I wonder if someone has a disk free to do a test for me. Basically I wanted to do a Layer-1 DVD from the original (Obviously we can't boot from it, but it might run arcade mode if it is swapped at the loading stage after exiting GT Mode). Just a thought and would eliminate this as a possibility if it doesn't work. You'll need Apache to extract rhe Layer-1 iso and a slide card or a flip-top to swap disks.

@L-burna. Hey what's up!
I've solved the patching issue by using Toolboy's patching kit for the HDD version. The toxic patch fails when you rebuild the iso with CDVDGEN.

Well,can you rebuild both layers and have a 2 disc project.Just as you mentioned,because I'm not 100% positive that both .VOL files are needed.I could be wrong on the .VOL files,but maybe it could work if you build two discs by applying the patches to the original image.Then reconstructing the second layer as the first layer,but I haven't tried it yet.Glad you mentioned that the Toxic patch doesn't work though,but a patch definately has to be applied like you mentioned.

@L-Burna. Not sure what you've read of the last GT4 thread, but I made a few discoveries about the filesystems.
Layer-1's VOL file contains the movies as you will doubtless know. You can find them in the VOL file with a hex editor by searching for TMPGEnc. It's in the header of the movie files denoting that they've been encoded using TMPGEnc (Sony know a good program when they see it lol). I will add that the complete movie files can be extracted from the vol file with no further decryption. I've tried exploiting this by hex editing out certain movies and also by shrinking them. Trouble is that anything modified before Movie36 on the GT4L1.VOL (Intro Movie) causes the game to lock up after the autoload. Disabling the intro movie on the save seems to get over that problem, but alas, still no arcade mode.
This leads me to believe that by hex editing files out, I'm probably screwing with the linking somehow... I wish I knew a little more. Also, There is at least part of the Intro movie on the layer-0 vol. I know that because half of it plays on a disk made from layer-0 only. Amazingly though, I can't find a trace of a TMPGEnc header.

Using winhex (under tools/file tools) you can concatenate(I think this means merge)2 files together.However when it merges the 2 files(in this case gt4.vol/gt4L1.vol it only uses anything that is the same in the 2 files once.As some of you know the beginning of the 2 files are the same.So when you concatenate(love that word!)the 2 files you end up with a 4.3gb file instead 0f 5.27 gb.So throw the other files back into the mix (core gt4/iopr300 ETC.and you in the dvd5 ballpark.However you can't create a iso image with a 4.3gb file.Has to be under 4gb.Any suggestions?

4gb is the max size for any one file in an iso image.There is a technical reason why(have a look on the net to satisfy your curiosity)

Alright this is what happens when you Concatenate,it will say the file sizes don't match.It can join two files together,only problem is getting them the same size.I already tried crowy a long time ago,just didn't work because of the size issues.Hey simpsim1 so your saying the two .VOL files are reading from each other right.The size maybe 4.35Gig for Swap Magic peeps ;).I can extract the movie files out of both .VOL files,only problem is putting them back in.

OK I finally have a plan on how we can get it to work a rip for Dvd-5.I checked out all the PSS files which are the movie files where they are located in the .ISO file.You have to look at it in sectors for example this is the location of the Starting point/Ending point of each file in GT4 for all the .PSS(The .PSS files are the movie files in the game) files:

I am thinking about extracting all the videos and downsampling making a new file which is about half the size of the original movies.Then opening the new created file in WinHex and copy and paste each Sector of the newly downsampled files in WinHex after deleting the original sectors for each movie.I know it might sound weird to some of you,but it might work never know until someone tries it out.Let me know if this would be a good plan or not it doesn't really sound like a bad idea to me,but I don't know let me know what your thoughts are on this process.

Right now I am figuring out all the Hash codes for WinHex purposes an so forth,so all you have to do is press the search button up top on WinHex and type in the start/end location for the movie files.

Alright done,so what you do is fire up WinHex and at the top of WinHex it should have a Search button.Scroll down from the Search menu to where it says find Hex values,and it should bring up a search bar.Where it says the following hex values will be searched then a white window where you can type in it.Type in the Hex codes I am going to give you and it should bring you right to the beginning of the file.If you use the Start Hex codes it will bring you to the start of the movie files.If you use the End Hex codes it will bring you to the very end of the movie file.Alright here is the Hex list:

You can use any kind of hex editor I suppose,but I like WinHex.Hex Workshop can do the same thing and is pretty good also.I am still working on it at the momment,downsampling takes a long time.

when somone makes a 100% DVD5 backup that works everytime please post it on a new thread because it takes ages to read the whole thread, just name it 'GT4 DVD5 backup 100% working' something like that so everyone know that this thread has got a full working copy of GT4 on DVD5

Using tmpegENC,to view the pss files only some of them are accessible.
But I used simple file joiner to join movie1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 and 9.pss gave the resulting joined file a .pss extension and then used tmpegENC to convert the file to mpeg2 format.Then I played it with Nero showtime.What you now have is a split screen view of one of the tracks.This goes for 1 lap then you have the credits screen(who put the game together) with a silver car racing around the track.From what I see here, movie2.pss - movie9.pss contain the credits sequence which equates to around 590mb.(although the resulting mpeg2 is only 57.6mb?)SO if we can get rid of these we are in dvd5 territory.L-Burna, movie2-9.pss files should be able to be removed safely.( I think? )

Well PSS_3 might want to keep this one in,seems like a good movie file to keep.I was thinking of just deleting some movies to see if that would work first,but it seems it would take close to 600MB of movie files.I think if I deleted some movies it might work.I can remove files to lower the image down in size by removing the movies,but then again that wouldn't make the game full though.It would be considered a rip,but all the gameplay could still be intact.I think I am going to have issues plugging in the edited movie files back into the image.I am guessing it would take close to 25-30 area to get the approximate size needed,dealing with the small vids.I can delete 41-65 if needed and that might work.The problem with the movie files is the size limit they are all pretty small.Alot of the movie files average about 25MB to 35MB a piece,so it is going to take alot of editing.I will keep working on it and post more results.Tricky part is deciding what to keep and what to get rid of to be honest.

however i would take it too... i "only" want the real game with arcade and story mode...
