KajNrig, im glad you got it sorted.
What problem are you having with TMPGEnc and what program is it. It seems like a daft question but TMPGEnc have an Xpress and Plus version?

thugan, you need a subtitle file if you want them displayed in a .avi file. if its a film in a foreign language then do a google search for 'subtitles' and you'll find a few sites that you can use to search for the subs of that film.
Once you have the subs, you then use a program like VobSub [FORGET what i said about DVDSubber!] to add the subs to the .avi file (you will need to convert the sub file if its not a .srt OR .sub file - see the link at the bottom for sub converters - chances are you may not need a sub converter but it depends on site i suppose), once you have sucessfully added the subs to the .avi file then open it up with Windows Media Player to see if its worked. If it has then use your favourite encoder to encode the .avi, author it then burn it.
The following link gives a simple guide to add subs:
http://www.videohelp.com/forum/userguides/153058.php
good luck with that.

One question please..........
If I write the subs to the .AVI file, convert the .AVI to DVD, are the subs permanently fixed or are they selectable?
What if the movie is split to 2 x cds?
Will I then need 2 x .srt/.sub files or do I need to join the 2 x .AVI files and THEN add the subs?
Thanks

Quote: What problem are you having with TMPGEnc and what program is it. It seems like a daft question but TMPGEnc have an Xpress and Plus version?
I've got TMPGEnc Plus 2.5. Is Xpress a water-downed version or something?
The problem I'm having is that TMPGEnc keeps saying "File 'so and so.avi' can not open, or unsupported."
I've been guessing that it's because my file is an XviD file. I might have to check to see if TMPGEnc supports the DivX/Xvid codec or not.
fantazar, are the AVI files GOING to be on 2 separate DVDs, or are they ALREADY on 2 CDs? If it's the former, then I'm pretty sure you can use one of the guides around here to split the AVI into two different parts. I'm not sure about the subtitles, but I'm guessing that you'd have to split the subtitle file, too.
If it's the former, then you shouldn't have a problem. Just convert each file separately.
As for the subtitles, there are many options. You can get selectable subtitles using TMPGEnc. If you just want subtitles with the video, you can use DivXtoDVD.
Sorry if that doesn't help much.

Okay, hyperthetically speaking, let's say I TORRENTize a movie (for example) and it's in 2 parts (ie: cd1.AVI & cd2.avi).
Of course, I want to make them into .VOB file and burn these to a single DVD disc.
I load both .AVI files into my converter (WinAvi), wham the lefty and and presto!!! .vob's galore complete with .ifo's.
Provided I have the .srt files, I can use Nero Recode 2 to add the subs and make menus if I wish, no problemo.
I was just wondering how it all works with writing subs to AVI files and whether the subs were then hardcoded into the movie or not. For sure, there's nothing worse than having subs on screen throughout the entire movie when you don't want them :|
Thanks anyway ;)

...I know I've read 'bout this somewhere before, but I just can't remember what it said. I'm sure it had something to do with SubRip or VopSub.
Maybe you should post your questions in the Subtitles section.

thugan, you might've wanted to read this:
Quote: 5. -> PIRACY AND LINKING TO PIRATED MATERIAL IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED, YOUR ACCOUNT WILL BE FROZEN IF YOU DO THIS <-
...but... then there's also this:
Quote: Case: Pirated material, such as serial numbers and direct links to pirated, copyrighted material (including direct links to torrent files and ed2k links). PROHIBITED
Case: Technical, in depth discussion about copy protection circumvention (i.e. cracking). PROHIBITED
Case: Discussion about pirated content and piracy, such as converting (downloaded) video and/or audio files to DVD/AudioCD/whatever format. PERMITTED
Case: Discussion about copy protection circumvention in general (extracting encrypted content, such as DVD movies, compact discs, copy protected console and computer software, using existing software). PERMITTED
Case: Links to sites offering possibly pirated content (including torrent files and ed2k links). PERMITTED
What is it? The forum rules. Just giving you a heads-up so you don't accidentally do something that'll ban you.
Since we can offer you sites, I'd say go to http://www.torrentreactor.net (or any other BitTorrent site) and search for whatever you need there. You'll need some sort of BitTorrent program (like BitLord) to download the torrents. (But I'm guessing you've already got that covered...)
As for DivXtoDVD, if you open up the movie tree, you should see a branch that says "Subtitle". Right-click on it, click on "Add subtitle stream" or something like that, and then put your subtitle file in. (But make sure it's in .srt format.)

Wow, you're just having some bad luck, aren't you? ^_^
Alrighty...
WinAVI converter should be freeware, no? It shouldn't be difficult to simply uninstall it and reinstall it again. Even if it isn't the free version, uninstalling and reinstalling it should work fine. Did you uninstall it properly? (ie Control Panel--->Add/Remove Programs--->WinAVI Converter--->Uninstall)
And I don't understand what you mean by "this time I didn't get the trial version and it did let me re-register". Do you mean that you had the trial version before, and when you reinstalled, it became a full version?
Your version of DivXtoDVD is free. Were you really expecting it to NOT advertise itself in your videos? If every program out there was willing to give out free versions of all its merchandise without ANY sort of catch or limitation, would any of the companies make money? I doubt it.
But anyway, about your problem. Like I said in the post before, go to http://www.torrentreactor.net or some other site like that, and do a search for whatever it is you need.
For GSpot -
Either go to File--->Open--->yourfilename(i'mguessingit'sffviiadventchildren).AVI, and it'll load things up and you'll see the various stats and codecs that it uses.
OR
Click on the little box in the upper-left-hand corner (the one with "..." in it), and go to <wherever your file is>.AVI. It'll load up the AVI and you'll see the stats, codecs, yadda yadda yadda.
It's actually pretty simple; I'm surprised you're having such a hard time with it.

KajNrig, TMPGEnc Xpress offers the same functionality but the emphasis is more on the Graphical User Interface, its much, much more user friendly.
I am almost certain that TMPGEnc is not the cause of the problem you are having with the "unsupported file". I got that a few times when i tried to open a downloaded movie that hadnt completed to its entirety, with DivX. Right click on the XviD and open it up with DivX, if you get the same message then the problem isnt with TMPGEnc but your movie. Also, make sure you have the latest version of DivX, if that doesnt work then try downloading K-lite codec pack at http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htm, its free so you might want to give that a go.
TMPGEnc does support DivX and XviD - it converts, in general, .avi's, check the contents or website for confirmation of this.

Ok, thanks, nikkibilly.
...but the help isn't necessary, anymore. I've just recently discovered DVD-lab, and that's pretty much solved all my issues. Used DivXtoDVD to change the AVI to VOB, then used DVD-lab, Mpeg-VCR, and FFMpeg GUI to make the DVD and other stuff I needed.
For selectable subs, the only thing I can suggest to you is that you use DVD-lab. That's the only process I've tried. But you should really go take a look through the Subtitles section.

Hi ,
I am using Super DVD Creator 8.50 http://www.alldj.com ,it works well ,good picture and excellent sound.
Just add all the video files in the convertion list and insert a blank DVD-R disc .then click run button .after an houre I get a dvd disc and plays very well on my LG home dvd player .
and just now I do a test ,if I put the subtitle file in the source clip AVI or DivX folder then run the software I can auto add the subtitle files to the dvd . anyone has tried this ?
the company master software have released a software very like the super dvd creator (named FTDVD Author )but can do the chaper menu ,only one step ,add all the video clips to the convertion list and then the software will auto add a chapter menu :) .
anyone used the FTDVD Author (http://www.dvds-author.com )? and how to do the motion menu with FTDVD Author ? and how to add the background music into the menu segment ?

I have tried using WinAvi and DivXtoDVD to make XviD files into DVD's.
Both programs worked, but WinAvi plays back almost to choppy to tolerate. DivXtoDVD worked much better, but there are still some studdering issues present, but not too bad. Can this be attributed to a lack of CPU horsepower during the transcoding? I am using a P4 2.4Ghz.

Hi..!!!
I have try encode .AVI .mpeg files to dvd files using Nero vision express2 and then burn it to dvd using Nero express. But the video quality is not good enough for DVD standard, it is because the source is not at a good quality. Does it mean we can't do anything about DVD R quality? If so, what is the differences between VCD writer and DVD writer? What can we do to get DVD quality ?
Thanks
