I have a screen shot of my 'Max' -- Though I don't use it nearly as much since Torrentspy has locked out American IP's -- Even though I can bounce my IP across seas, its still a pain.

*On that note, do you guys know of an equivalent site that lists torrents? Would be most appreciated.

Anyway, to answer your question:

On an 8Mbps Down, 450Kb up (Odd up speed).. You would get, at optimum.. Around..

800-900Kb/s download (total) .. and somewhere around 40-55Kb/s on your Upload to others. (seeding)/(peering).

Hope that helps... keep in mind max speeds don't always occur, especially on a single file download, but on multiple 'simultaneous' downloads you should come close on well seeded Torrents.

Speakeasy says:

Download speed is 13022 kpbs
Upload speed is 1320 kpbs

With the default uTorrent settings and a well seeded torrent file I averaged between 20-25kb/s download and 35/40kb/s upload. Then I did the steps and got everything all worked out nice, but my numbers only got worse... the upload shot through the roof in hundreds and my download wouldn't leave 2kb/s

any help please?

I can't really give you any absolute answer to that problem. Your upload speed is fantastic.

Keep a few things in mind.

If you saturate your upload, say 95-100% of what your connection will allow for upload, it will automatically saturate your download speed.

There is a bit of overhead needed for both upload and download sped.

To make this a little more simple:

Make SURE your upload speed is set at no higher than 60-75% of the Maximum allowed by Speakeasy for your torrents.

Download is a little less finicky, and you aren't worried about the upload slowing a bit, so you can usually keep this at maximum, if you are, set it at about 90-95%.

There are several areas within Utorrent to set upload maximums, and download maximums..

Go through every menu/setting screen/option and set the upload to either a predefined value or a percentage, depending on what it asks for.

If I were you, for your purposes I would go ahead and limit your upload to about 25K. And keep your download at maximum allowed.

This could be a case , as I said, of your upload maxing out not allowing any overhead for the download to garner speed. Maybe not. It could also be an overlooked download speed limitation setting. Maybe not.

If the port is verified open, DHT on, then I would also, on the side.. Try another Bittorrent client of your choosing at the *default* settings and see what speeds you get.

I know you think you've checked it all, and you probably have, but go ahead and look again, and make the necessary changes to the upload, and download limitations.

Best of luck.

hey, I have a red exclamation mark in utorrent and i'm using AVG. The speeds I get are 4.5 kbs on adsl broadband. I run 4 torrents at a time and i'm not using a router. What can cause this slow download??? Thanks

Could be your ISP throttles torrents: http://www.azureuswiki.com/index.php/Bad_ISPs Make sure to use Protocol Encryption: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/395674 and a port over 10,000 (uncheck randomize port, don't know if it matters on a modem). Check for your modem at Port Forward in case it has a Firewall and if you use a Firewall, make utorrent an exception. set upload speed correctly at options>speed guide>connection type. utorrent shows in kB (kilobytes) and most speed tests show in kb (kilobits), 1kB = 8 kb.This is an accurate site: http://www.speedtest.net/ check a few times at various times.

Thanks for the fast reply =I
I did what you told me to do and it was a success <=)
It was actually AVG, so I switched to Zone Alarm and its working like a charm.

I don't know how any of you are getting great download speeds downloading torrents, I think the most I've ever got was around 25kB/s & that was a greatly seeded torrent, I get excited when it's going at 10kB/s but it usually below that.

I need some advice on what I can do, I went to portforward.com but I can't seem to find an open port when I do the port test, is there a recommended port I can use?

Which bittorrent client (Azureus/uTorrent etc.)are you using?

Do you have a router? If so, make and model?

Have you cleared you bittorrent client through your software firewall?

Have you taken a speed test and made adjustments in your client based upon the speed test results?

Who is your ISP (Internet Service Provider)?

I'm using uTorrent, my router is a open iConnect Access611, I have added uTorrent to my exceptions list in the firewall,I took a speed test came up around 210k download & around 50 upload,I tried making adjustments in uTorrent, I did some searching on google for instructions of getting teh best out of uToorent but so far nothings worked,I was surprised that people get over 40kB/s 'cause I've never had that before... And my ISP is Westnet...

I just did another test here's my results:

:::.. testmy.net test results ..:::
Download Connection is:: 216 Kbps about 0.22 Mbps (tested with 386 kB)
Download Speed is:: 26 kB/s
Upload Connection is:: 51 Kbps about 0.1 Mbps (tested with 97 kB)
Upload Speed is:: 6 kB/s
Tested From:: http://testmy.net (Main)
Test Time:: 2008/01/17 - 5:18am
D-Validation Link:: http://testmy.net/stats/id-4TH0MQL2O
U-Validation Link:: http://testmy.net/stats/id-92F1RPYKO
User Agent:: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 5.1; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; FDM; IEMB3; IEMB3) [!]

I'm a bit confused now, my connection is 216Kpbs or 26kB/s,& uTorrent goes by kB/s,so now I know why I've never gone over 26kB/s,that's the extent of my connection,my average speed is around 8kb/s with 1 seed & a few peers,so I guess it's not that bad,I eventually get my torrents done,it just takes a couple or so weeks. And if there's heaps of seeds it'll get to the extent of my connection,but obviously alot of people on here have super Braodband speeds to get in the 100kB/s, I just though I was missing something...

Are you getting a green check for network status (bottom line next to DHT:)?
If not, you can check out this guide for your router an uTorrent:
http://www.portforward.com/english/route...11/Utorrent.htm

Quote:
I took a speed test came up around 210k download & around 50 upload
Is that in kilobits (kbs) or kilobytes (kBs)?
8kbs = 1kBs so there is a big difference.

You can go to Options/Speed Guide in uTorrent where there is a link to a speed test and a pulldown menu of usual upload speeds,
that will adjust your uTorrent settings to their optimal.
The pulldown menu [where it says (Connection Type)] shows speeds in kilobits.
When taking the speed test, you should stop all other internet activity, including torrents, before taking the test
and you should take the test a few times to get a reliable average.

The rest of uTorrent shows speeds in kilobytes.
So if that 210 is kilobits, then 210kbs = about 26kBs.

I found nothing to indicate Westnet is shaping bittorrent traffic.
I see that Westnet offers a variety of plans, remember that they advertise speed in bits. So a 512 connection will = 64kBs.

I'm assuming that 210 or 216 to be exact,is Kilobits,yeah so obviously I'm getting the right speeds from uTorrent,if you say [quote' "So if that 210 is kilobits, then 210kbs = about 26kBs."
,

so all the plans they list on ISP sites are Kilobits, so what happens when speeds hit the Mbps? is that megabits or Megabytes per second,I'm assuming it's Megabits or megabytes would be completely insane. So is that around 1200 kilobytes to a Megabit?

They do advertise in megabits.
The reason is simple, it looks more attractive to say 8Mbs than 1MBs (when most people don't know the difference).

Quote:

Correct 1250kBs = 1Mbs
1Mbs = 1,000,000 bits and 1kBs = 1000Bs = 8000bs x 12.5 = 1,000,000bits

See Data Units for more info.
Of course that will confuse things even more when they talk about 1000 or 1024 bits to kbs.
But as I understand it most speeds are based upon the 1,000 and most storage is based upon the 1024.
But I get a headache trying to figure all that out.

I just saw your other post-you must have posted while I was typing.
If you are on a 256kbs connection, then the test results would be about correct.
If you are on a 512kbs connection, then that would be slower than you should be getting.

The trouble for you using the Speed Guide is that if the 50kbs is the correct upload rate, then the Speed Guide will set your upload to 3kBs (using xx56k) and the anti-leech feature of uTorrent will limit your upload to 18kBs. See uTorrent FAQ: Download Limited.

Using xx64k will set you to 5kBs, which is a tad bit high of the 80% rule (upload in uTorrent should be set to max 80% of overall upload ability).
But your download will be limited to 30kBs, which should have no effect as that is your limit anyways.
I would say try the 64 and if it slows your internet connection, you could move the max upload down to 4 at Options/Prefences/Connection.
I do not think it would be necessary to make other adjustments.

I have 2 more questions. Since I applyed UnPP on my router I now have 2 internet connections icons: one is my Local area connection the other is local area connection on linux IGD,my lacoal area connection is running at 100.0Mbps & the other 1.5Mbps can someone explain all this to me & is it neccesary to have UnPP applyed?

And my 2nd question is about the speed of the Local area conection,as discussed before in my last post, 100.0Mbps how can it be running at 100.0Megabits per second when my connection is only a 256Kilobit per second connection????

Dude get a book on Amazon.com, A+ Certification or a Dummies book would do you a great time.

for now im cool, I was switching from ATT to Earthlink and then realized my phone line provider is weak as hell i couldnt pull a one kilo off 56k (Dial up) and switced to Cable.
Now I realized that I Get peak speeds since im in a small town and no one uses a damn pc around here. All that Wire just for me. AHAHAHA!

I googled "internet speed test" went to speak easy and with the nearest city I received:

Download Speed: 23252 kbps (2906.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 1485 kbps (185.6 KB/sec transfer rate)

other locations:

Last Result:
Download Speed: 6978 kbps (872.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 1522 kbps (190.3 KB/sec transfer rate)

My advice to you is:
Run all updates with microsft they usually do the tweaks for you.
Download Secure-IT and Harden-IT.
or Cyberhacker i think i dont use it no more i use XP tools that comes when you install windows LOL.

My Three Google lookups for you:
"Windows Shortcuts"
"CMD COMMANDS"
"RUN COMMANDS"

HI I have you torrent. My speeds are between around 5-20. It seems that they like to go up and then down again constanly. I have a D-Lnk router with a 256 kB connection. I have already forwarded the port for U-torrent and it says I have a working network connection at the bottom. Are these good speeds for the connection? I use to have a 5 Mb connection and the speed is still the same in U-torrent (internet is slower of course) as it was when I had the 5 Mb connection. Also most of the trackers say they are offline. Anybody have any suggestions?

Your 256 connection is kilobits (kbs) and uTorrent shows its speeds in kilobytes (kBs). 8kbs = 1kBs so the 256kbs = 32kBs.

So your speeds are not that far off.

If your network status is showing green, I do not see why trackers are showing offline so much.

You might want to try enabling encryption and see if that helps.
Go to Options/Speed Guide and at the bottom of the Speed Guide screen there is a box to tick to Enable Encryption.
Press Use Selected settings to save.

You may also want to use the Speed Guide to adjust your uTorrent settings to their optimal for speed.
There is a link to a speed test on that screen.
The important speed for the settings is the upload speed of your connection.
You should stop all internet activity, including torrents, before taking the test and you should take the test a few times to get a reliable average.

Once you have an average upload speed you would go back to the Speed Guide screen and there is a pulldown menu of usual upload speeds where it says Connection Type.
This menu shows speeds in kilobits (kbs) and you should choose the one closest to your speed and it will automatically adjust several uTorrent settings to fit in with your upload speed.

Press Use Selected Settings button to save.

This is the never ending thread -- :)

Anyhow, .. good advice on the newbies to the Torrent client scene.

As for connections, it is all limited to your ISP, and then further by your configuration, lastly limited by the speed of the overall seeds on the torrent itself.

For example, (not to brag) -- I run Dual ISP's on a dual WAN router,running Round Load Balancing. So I obtain in the ballpark of 2650Kb/s Down, and 280Kb/s Up. Or in other terms, about 2.6 Megabytes per second, and a touch over a quarter of a Megabyte a second on the Upload portion. Connection is 20Mbps/2Mbps. However, this is much higher than the typical broadband user. Though there are some people with Optimum online/fiber that run 30/2 or higher.. but it is a small community. Then you have some broadband connections that are barely above Dial-up speeds. Running anywhere from 6Kb/s to 20Kb/s. Just take note of what your ISP advertised connection speed is:

A good test to check your speed in real time is www.speedtest.net

But, if your ISP advertises say, 3Mbps/256Kbs -- Then your top torrent speeds would be about 300Kb/s down, and 26Kb/s up. If 1.5/128 it would run 150Kb/s download, and 13Kb/s upload. (This is rough, and on the low side for maximum's but an easy conversion).

Basic principle here is that you can easily 'guesstimate' what your speeds should be hovering around and tinker with your BT client if things aren't approaching say, 50% of that supposed speed.

I asked this earlier, but would really , really appreciate any and all answers here:

Please list any and all Bit Torrent search engines you guys use now. Since Torrentspy blocked US users I can only Bounce my IP which is a pain to get linked in (and since the US market was blocked the quality of the files has gone way down).

There must be a new equivalent or better Search engine for Bittorrents out there that you guys use! :) -- Please share the knowledge.

I know of thepiratebay, and several others but they rarely have what I am looking for.. and seeds are really lacking.

Thanks a ton!

There are so many posts here, I am not sure but I think you indicated earlier that you had UPnP enabled.

If you did forward the port with the guide at portforward, then you should disable UPnP.

With the red icon you can still send out data and make connections, but others cannot initiate connections to you.
