Thanks DVDBack23
After reading your setup tips my downloads have really increased. I am getting an average of 800-900kbs on nearly everything i'm downloading with not even great seed/peer ratio. On good seed/peer ratio i'm now getting up to 1700kbs. My connection in Australia is 8000/384. I will say that after I did the tweaks thats when I noticed the greatest increases!!! So if anyone is not getting the speeds they want, go back and check that you have done everything that DVDBack says and follow it to the letter. Before I did the changes I was only getting 250-300kbs at the most.

Thanks again DVDBack23

I isp is WESTNET in western australia. Speed is rated at 8000/384. Its only adsl at the moment. I'm only running it through my d-link dsl-502t modem straight to my computer. Nothing special really, but after setting everything as told, thats when I started to get some really fast speeds.
Must be our great internet services in Australia. I had 2 files downloading today at 1280kbs each simultanously and downloaded the 2 files (750mb each ) in about 1.5 hours

That time doesnt seem right, when i download at 1 MB/s i get my files in 6 mins, not 1.5 hours.

thats 1280kb not 1280kB. when im downloading my down speed is saying 160kB. All I have done is multiplied that by 8 to get my speed in kbs. Im assuming thats correct isnt it??

Ive just started using utorrent, done all my settings right and was excited by getting a fast internet connection, but reading through all the posts here and after reading them am more confused as ever about what a good download speed should be?
I know that when im downloading something im getting a download speed of around 100-120kBS. After reading some of the other posts, some people are talking about speeds of 700-800kbs speeds.

What is the difference in kBs and kbs because its hard to know if my speeds are ok or not.

Ive done a speed check and got 5234/313 if this helps!!!

Any help will be good just to know if my download speed is crap or good compared to everyone elses!!

Sorry if its a silly question but i'm only new to this!!

Judging by your speeds I can only guess that your connection is 1.5Mbps/128Kbps -- Which translates to roughly 150Kb/sec down and 12-15Kb/Sec upload.

Your configuration sounds fine.. Use the speed guide and use "xx/128k"

If for some reason your connection is 1.5Mbps/64Kbps (an odd configuration) -- Choose "xx/64Kbps" in the speed guide.

Go to www.speedtest.net

And choose the closest location to you, usually the recommended. Run several tests, and take the best result.

If your port is forwarded correctly you can test it in Utorrent and it will tell you, also the Yellow Exclamation mark will turn into a Green check mark. With the proper forwarding and DHT enabled via an open port, then there is nothing more you can do.

With your connection you can expect downloads at *max* to be around 150-175Kb/sec -- This will be on a private tracker, or a public with a high ratio of Seeds to Peers.

For example -- I have been using Torrentspy.com a public system for a while and maintained around 250-600Kb/Sec -- I have since signed up to a few private trackers,.. and My speeds have jumped up to 1300Kb/Sec or 1.3 MegaBytes (MB) a second. IE: a Gig would take 17minutes or so. Pretty drastic difference.

Note this is on a 10Mbit connection -- 10Mbps/1Mbps - I have two of these, although not load balanced,.. so an overall bandwidth capacity of 20Mbps down/2Mbps up,.. But that has to be spread at the least on 2 files, each at 1.2 - 1.3MB per second,.. Or over several files to reach the 3MegaBytes/sec mark.

Uploads run about 130-150Kb/sec -- Total UL Bandwidth of 300Kb/Sec -- If I load it to 1 port, one happy leecher gets a big spike. ;)

Morning all-
Curious if anyone has insight into what may cause a problem I'm recently having.
If I download a file larger than 2+ gigs (it's not one huge file, but many small .rar files), uTorrent will work perfectly for about 5 or 10 minutes, then it will stop responding - forcing me to "force" close the program.
I will be going through the steps outlined in this thread to check my setup (although I think I have it setup properly - I have been getting great speeds). I have tried turning off my virus scan. I have tried only selecting have the torrent (meaning download the first 2+ gigs then the second 2+ gigs). Nothing seems to help.

I don't believe it is my router crashing as I am still able to access the internet after the program stops responding.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is driving me b.a.n.a.n.a.s.

first try allowing less seeders and leechers to connect to you. Set the max to 100-150 or so.

No problem..

No you do not have to forward ports through your modem if you are using a router -- Some DSL modems act as routers and this could be the case,.. but not in your scenario. So if you have the proper port(s) forwarded for your client you should be set to go.

That is the single biggest factor I see in Torrent speed, is having the open port vs not.

okay, i think its good to go, but when i download a file from the offical bittorrent site i got a max speed of 166.8kb/s, but when i download a iso from lets say the piratebay i still get that low speed. why is that? do you also have to have more peers than seeders to get a 1.3 gig file to run fast?

pretty simple really...public trackers have horrible seed:leech ratios. On private trackers it is a bit different, I could be connected to a few seeds and a bunch of peers and dl at 800KB/s.

And just to be clear, just cause there are a lot of seeds doesnt gurantee fast speeds....for all you know they capped their upstream at 5KB/s for the torrent. In your case, you will never reach good speeds on crap sites thepiratebay. Do yourself a favor and find a few good private trackers.

Have you tried that program that automatically searches for open private trackers? I forget the name, and I probably found it in this thread -- But if you need it I will look it up.

Just for an example of speeds getting on a private tracker --

This is not my max, but pretty close. Approx ~1.3MegaBYTES per second. Which is about 11Mbps.

And how quick should your connection be? Mine should be only 512/512, but normally my dl speed is 80-90kbps. Not that its a problem, it should only be around 60kb/s. Im wondering, when do you have any time to seed, or do you? ;)

Allowing fewer seeders and leechers to connect solved the problem.

DVD: -- Not sure this matches up to your 14-15Mb connection, but I like it.

Sebu: -- My connection should be 10Mbps/1Mbps -- Though through provisioning and other such tweaks.. I run more like 11-12Mbps. And about 1.5Mbps on the upload. Depending.

You are absolutely right, a 512Kbps should run 64000bps at its max. Though ISP's often provision 10-20% higher to cover overhead,.. which is where many users see a bit over their advertised rate. Consider yourself lucky.. as do I. Some people can't get their advertised bandwidth, not even close, due to Congested servers/Overworked uBR's at CMTS's or Telcos.. or even just a saturated backbone on their MSO.

As for seeding.. Yes I most certainly do. I believe in seeing very much so. I always seed 1.5x the download, and many times I will seed 10-20times.

For instance a 3Gig file I downloaded the other day I seeded up to 65Gigs.. The upload is so high it seeds fairly quickly. And I limit it, but not too much.. And if I leave the computer, I will unlimit the upload and let the seeding go. It only works properly if you seed at least as much as you DL. :)

Acewing:

Ok man, no problem -- Let me know if you can't find it.

As for the picture -- Simply windows command.

Anything currently "ON" your display can be captured by pressing the "Print Screen" key,... usually abbreviated by "Prt Scr" --(Top right corner of keyboard).

Then you go to your favorite image editor.. and select Edit, and paste. Or merely right click and paste, or control-V.

Examples would be Photoshop, Corel, or even Microsoft Paint. (I used paint for speed in that one :) -- As you could tell with the big yellow line).

I wasn't trying to brag, just showing potential speeds.

I can't touch those who have "FIOS" in select areas,.. garnering 20,30 or even 50Mbps a second.. Imagine running 6.25 Megabytes/Sec download. Or more accurately,.. 6250K/Sec on the down. Sigh.

Take care,
