Ok, so I did as your guide said, every step. I tested my internet with the link provided and got these results:
Download Speed: 20383 kbps (2547.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 1511 kbps (188.9 KB/sec transfer rate)

Which, I assume, means I have 2.55 MB/s internet connection?

Well.. then why in the world am I getting only about an 50-70 kB/s average, and a peek of about 150 kB/s. I've gotten into the 200s before, but never on a steady basis, maybe once a week for about 5 min lol.

Anyhow, is this speed normal for me? If not, any ideas on how I can improve it?

Here's some tidbits that may help for a conclusion on my problem (if I have one...)

- Sometimes my upload is around 200 kB/s while my download will only be half that. (I have tried lowering it, made no real difference on my download speed).

- I am not using a private tracker (sadly :( )

- Tested a 710 MB torrent.
It's stats: Seeds 17 (2042) Peers 22 (92)(76 in Swarm) Download Average: 78 kB/s Upload Average: 28 kB/s
- Tested a 2.81 GB Torrent.
Stats: Seeds 18(32)(119 in swarm) Peers 30(803)(183 in swarm) Download Average: 62 kB/s Upload Average: 22 kB/s

- Color of the network status light in ”Torrent's status bar is green.

- My ports are said to be open when checked with the Utorrent speedguide.

- Operating system: Windows XP

- Security software installed: McAfee Security Center, Windows XP firewall, Spyware Doctor (Yes, I have opened the port as the suggested website said.. except on spyware doctor, dunno if that even changes anything.. but it is constantly on.)

- Router: D-Link DI-624 (Yes, I have opened the port as the suggested website said)

- Modem: Terayon TJ 715x

- ISP: Comcast Cable Internet

Thanks for reading!

I can GURANTEE you are using public trackers!!! It is no wonder your speeds are sooo slow! If you are going the torrent route, try to get on TL or some other private trackers, you will max out your sick connection in no time.

edit

i just saw you said you arnt on a private tracker, guess im not as all knowing as I thought :/ I would cap my up speed on those public trackers, they arnt sharing so dont share either....I would expect nothing short of dl'ing at 2 MB/s with your connection. You are doing everything right, just going to the wrong places.

Well that's actually quite good to hear! I've been checking TL daily for a few days now, I'm sure I'll get in there once they open up some slots sooner or later. :D Thanks for the quick reply!

Well damn, after some searching, I got onto a private tracker and OMFG.. you weren't lieing. These are insane speeds. Up to 1 mB/s already after only 4 min (on a 1.2g file) and it's STILL going up. Thanks a bunch for the guide, and thanks also for the suggestion of a private tracker!

Edit: So I was looking around and found this article http://torrentfreak.com/speed-up-your-torrents

Anyhow it states this:
2. Hack the max TCP connections
"If you?re on XP sp2, your TCP connections are limited to a maximum of 10. This seriously hurts your downloading speed because it wont let you connect to a high amount of ip numbers. It is supposed to slow down viruses because their spreading strategy is to connect to a high amount of ip numbers, but it also cripples your torrent downloads.
A nice way to fix this is to download this patch, it allows you to set the maximum allowed connections to any number you want. Any number between 50 and 100 is ok."

I've never really heard this before... and because it edits a system file, I am curious if this is even recommended?

And one other thing (you guys seem like the people to ask, even though this could be WAY off subject). While I was checking my static IP address with the whole portforwarding process I noticed my Dhcp was disabled, and in the pictures provided on that sites tutorial theirs was enabled. Does this matter? lol Sorry if that's all off subject!

I have a problem...first off props to DVDBack23 for this guide it was amazing and worked very well. I have an issue though. Some of my software updated and im guessing becuase of the static ip or port forward it no longer works. Mozilla cant find a connection and the AIM service cannot be reached. How do i fix this and if it is not fixable how do i undo the effects of this guide?

Dude, I posted that earlier about the max connection. Well, all I can say is that it works! However, you can't go online while dl coz it literally takes all the bandwidth of your internet. I just put it in default after experiencing that. But it really increase your dl speed.

although it is a great guide and works tremendously i feel the need to inform people of a drawback i have come to find. DO NOT update any internet related software. such as AIM or MOZILLA. Somewhere in the process of this guide when the programs are already on the computer they work but when you change them they lose all connectivity to the internet. I called belkin and my isp to reset everything back to default and it still will not allow either program to connect. So here i am stuck with no AIM and no Mozilla. If anyone knows how to fix this please feel free to post its resolution.

Try reinstalling them, and make sure they're not blocked in your firewall settings.

I also have a very fast ISP;

Here is an example of my average speeds: (some tests are a little higher and a few are a little lower)

Last Result:
Download Speed: 8241 kbps (1030.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 723 kbps (90.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Speakeasy!

I'm running windows xp sp2 and utorrent 1.6.1

I've tried all the fixes (i think) and still only getting a couple hundred kbps downloads at times on private trackers - but averaging around 60-80 kbps most of the time - and much much lower downloads on public trackers.

I normally takes several hours or days to download larger files (movies etc) and days or weeks to upload and seed to get a 1:1 ratio

what am I doing wrong??

hey penny2, that speed isn't bad! Am also averaging 6-80kbps and 100kbps in private trackers. So I think your speed is pretty decent. I have 7mb connection.

wow, swamis! You have a very insane connection. Better change your utorrent to 1.6 coz 1.7 has a lot of problems and bugs. Oh and also, Vista isn't very good in terms of compatability with torrents.

Quite a connection. At options>preferences>connection, set UL to 170, DL to 1500 or 0, disable UPnP and use a port over 10,000 that isn't the default. At options>preferences>bittorrent, you can enable both DHT options but only on public trackers, set Protocol Encryption: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/395674 and Global seeds and peers both to 300. You can also set your UL at options>speed guide>connection type but I think 1 MB is too low and 2 MB is too high. Run your speed test over a few days to get a good average. 8 kb = 1 kB which utorrent uses and you want 80% of your upload test. 10% works fine too. You can disable automatic updates at options>preferences>general if you go back to 1.6.

Great forum eveyone.
I was wondering why alot of you are getting better download speeds from private trackers rather than public trackers? What are the differances in public and private?
I think that the private trackers have less traffic, but don't they have less seeders as well?

Thanks y'all,
JLock

On private trackers, a proper DL/UL ratio has to be maintained and upload speed isn't throttled as it usually is on a public site. Also, many private sites have fewer seeds but they're uploading at full speeds to achieve a good ratio. Same thing, actually

Yes, mistycat is right. People in private trackers need to maintain a good ratio or they will be kicked out ASAP. Also, what you said it right. Usually, they have less seeders but those seeders have insane upload speeds. They are very dedicated when uploading speeds and maintaining it. If you see a torrent in a private tracker that has 2 seeders, expect a speed around 400kbps. That is hella fast...

Hey dude, awesome guide, at least to the point where I got in it.
I'm doing the tweaking test on the broadbandreports site but I get"* Downloading file of size 1024000: Failed to download: Read timed out"
Is there any way to solve this problem or an alternative test site? :\
I tested torrents by telling my friends to download them, they would get like high speeds like above 100kbps while I get 0-5kbps on the same torrents. It's really annoying me. I have no router, my firewall is disabled, and my ports are all fine.
Anyway I guessed this test would really help me but its not working. :\

Try this for a test: http://www.speedtest.net/ and unless you're using the same ISP as your friends, you could be throttled, check here, not all but fairly comprehensive: http://www.azureuswiki.com/index.php/Bad_ISPs
