TUTORIAL - HDD ON SLIM PSTWO _ USB EXTREME/ USB ADVANCE

Ok there are A LOT of questions going on about how to have a HDD in a Slim PS2 (pstwo). I will explain how to do it here in this tutorial.
*NOTE* This is the ONLY way to have a hdd on a slim ps2 (that i know of) and it is not really compatable. Here is a list (not sure on accuracy) of compatable games with USB EXTREME/ADCANCE

Here is a list of THINGS YOU NEED
-An External USB HDD or a Internal HDD with an External USB Enclosure(like this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817145314) *Can be found on ebay for cheaper!*
-A way of booting cd-rs on your ps2. This can be SWAP MAGIC V3.6 discs or a mod chip. Swap magic is the cheaper way to do this and you don't void your warranty. (Swap Magic MUST be v3.6 is you have an older version you can download v3.6 and boot it with the version you have)
-USB Extreme or USB Advance
USB advance is free and it can be downloaded here http://www.sksapps.com/hd/USBAdvance1.Cracked.rar.
USB Extreme does not require a modchip or swap magic but it costs money and can be bought from here http://www.modmonster.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=12... (I suggest buying swap magic v3.6 as it can be used for more purposes and it is cheaper)
-The tool USB EXTREME (http://www.ps2nfo.com/USBExtreme_wininst.zip) or http://www.ps2nfo.com/usbfaq.html

-Plug in your USB HDD, install drivers and format it in windows to NTFS (you can right click on the drive and hit format)
-Open up the USB EXTREME tool (on your computer) and click on the Disc Format tab and then click Format.
*For thoes who bought USB EXTREME skip the next 2 steps and just insert the disc into your pstwo.
-Burn USB ADVANCED to a cd. (burn the .bin using a program like nero or alcohol 120 while selecting BURN IMAGE! you are not actually burning the .bin as a data file...its an image)
-Stop the USB HDD and plug it into your PStwo. Now put in the USB ADVANCE cd ( either using the modchip or booting up with swap magic v3.6)
-A screen that says USB ADVANCE or USB EXTREME should pop up and then it will go to a list where games should be. If this happens.. congrats... you did it right. Now scroll down to see how to install games.

-Create a folder called SWAPMAGIC on the hdd. Inside the folder place the contents of the USB ADVANCE CD. ( they should be dummy, system and USBADVN.ELF )
-Rename USBADVN.ELF to SWAPMAGIC.ELF
-Stop the USB HDD and plug it into your PStwo. Now put in the USB ADVANCE cd ( either using the modchip or booting up with swap magic v3.6)
-A screen that says USB ADVANCE or USB EXTREME should pop up and then it will go to a list where games should be. If this happens.. congrats... you did it right. Now scroll down to see how to install games.
HOW TO INSTALL GAMES :
-Plug in your USB HDD
-Put a PS2 game into your disc drive (if the game is already on your computer you can mount it with alcohol 120)
-Open up the USB EXTREME tool on your computer
-Select your Disc Drive the PS2 game is in, Media type (most are DVD's) and your USB HDD
-Now you can name the game and hit start.
-Once it is done you can stop the hdd and put it into your pstwo and start up USB ADVANCE
-The name of the game should show up and you just press 'X' to play!

nicely done. You know how to patch games so they will work with usbextreme?For example... killzone wont work with usb extreme but there is a patch that will make it work somehow.

does the disk needs to be formatted for the USBADVANCE logo to show up?
cuz i have a USBADVANCE Image on my computer, I tested on a ps2 emulator and it loads up well
but when i burned it a CDR and put it on my ps2, the ps2 turns on, says "PLAYSTATION2" like if it was goin to boot, then it starts to do the usual noise of reading a CD and thats the only thing, black screen and it never moves on...
the other image i have is for USBEXTREME, but all it does is say "installing independence exploit" and then "install complete" im not really a super tech guy, i just want to play games through my usb hdd anybody knows why both things are working?
btw, i have a slim ps2 70001 with a MARS chip

well... im happy to finally come to undesrtand how the process goes to run custom elf files on my ps2...
unfortunately, what i discovered is not so nice...
my ps2 DOESNT run them...
I used ARMAX to test USBADV.ELF and USBEXTREME.ELF and when i select to open them, it looks like if its gonna load the app but it doesnt...
(at least for those 2)
I've tested with 5 diff apps so far
USBADV.ELF - FAILED
USBEXTREME.ELF - FAILED
MCFORMAT.ELF - WORKED
HDLOADER.ELF - FAILED
PS2LINK.ELF - FAILED
im really bummed... well not bummed.. actually confused... cuz if it was that it couldnt play ANY elf file at least I would know where to look but this way i honestly dont know what happens..
anybody with a clue on whats wrong here???

Hi all! I have ps2 slim and i bought usbextreme and a hdd wd 160gb external. My question is when i install a second game on hdd the new one replaces the ul.cfg file and on ps2 game list appears only one game at a time? how can I fix this?

cheers for the step by step. i have one problem, when i try to burn the bin file to disc and then run it with swap magic 3.6 i does not work. i get "please enter ps2 disc"
please help. i've been trying for months now.
files also in the folder are ul_format, ul_install, Usb-advance Bin File, usb-advance Image file and USBExtreme ul_install

HI i write the USB ADVANCE in a CD
but mi play-slim dont read it (the screen put on BLACK)
i have a chip, but i have not the Swap Magic cd
Is this a problem?
MAIBE I NEED WRITE MI USB ADVANCE CD WITH A SPECIAL CONFIGURATION ON THE ALCOHOL OR Nero SOFT.???
OR MAIBE MI CHIP DONT WORK WITH THIS USB ADVANCE PROGRAM????

hi, i followed all the steps but my hard drive is a Archos AV400 20GB and is FAT32. i want to format it to NTFS but it contains alot of important data to record off the tv and ova stuff lyk that is ther any way of installing the games without converting

hi everyone,
I would like to thank in advance for all your help till now...i have managed to create USB Advance CD ...i managed to put in Winning Eleven 8 on the Hard Disk...now my problem is my slim PS2 would just hang up when i try to play the game, it boots up on the USB Advance Cd , i can select the game it stops after the selection with the message " Please wait loading Tittle" thats it ...it stays like that forever...in the meantime my friends PS2 is able to play the same game on my harddisk and using the USB Advance cd i provided him.I belive my Slim PS2 is moded since i can play all the DVD's directly
my ps2 information is as follows
console - scph 70004
browser- 1.40
cd player -2.00
Playstation driver -1.11
dvd player - 3.10E
mac id- 00.04.1f.52.96.4f
my friend has a old model and he already uses hdloader
his info is as follows

i need you advise on how to make my slim ps2 work or is there a way to get the same drivers as my friends to make it work.

There is a solution called the XCM HD Connect, http://www.extreme-mods.com/xcm-hd-connect-p.html Also might want to look into the HD Combo, http://www.hdcombo.com/hdcombo_install.htm which basically makes your slimline v12+ PSTwo into an older fat PS2 + HD. The USB solution is wayyyyy to slow. Believe me, i've done research on different websites & everyone complains about choppy video & loadtimes. I will be getting both the SMv3.6/breakerPr0 and DMS4 + XCM HD connect.

-some time usb advance does not boot or blank screen
-mod chip problem, try to update. i have this problem b4.
-game problem
-not all game supported, and speed = slow. i prefer dvd.
-driver changes
-why do u want to change to the old driver, 3000 = fat version, so they can use hd loader(have support dvd 9 blah2,) better than usb loader(extreme or advance). if u want to use hd loader, then u need to do some extra work on your slim version.

Hey there!
I've been browsing this site for a week now. I got my (first) PStwo (75014) ten days ago and since then I kept reading and reading the topics around this forum. I can say that I got a lot of information and managed to do everything I wanted.
I got myself an external USB HDD. I installed some backup games on it. I ran the usbadvance.elf and got on the GAME-LIST screen. Here is the problem: I couldn't get any of them to load. It will just stay with the "loading title" box. (I have no problems using the HDD as a mass: device with launchelf or any other filemanager, that supports mass-storage devices)
I'm running moded PStwo-74005 (PAL) - modchip Mars-A752. I have no problems running any of my backups nor DVD-Videos, I got ps2reality to play divX titles over the network, I got everything running exept this usbadvance and keylauncher (the latest always giving me an error).

Hello Ben I followed all the steps of your tutorial "Getting it to work with just the one swap magic disc" but in the last one, in the games list of usb advance appears the this message "insert a usb device" and i can´t load any game. I don´t known what happens.
Can u help me please?

I have a v14 slimline with dms4pro se installed. I burned the image using Nero , but while booting I just get a blank screen. I tried to run the elf file from toxic bios (0.41) and it would still be a blank screen. Just to make sure I was doing the burning correctly, I did burn a hdloader cd (even though I do not have an internal hdd) and it booted perfectly as I could see the hdloader splash page.
I am assuming I should get some screen also when I boot with the USB Advance disk. Please let me know if there is a special process to burn the usb advance disk.

i follow the method mentioned above and i managed to install the games on usb hdd using usb hdd enclosure and i got the game list on the usb advance when i boot the usb advance cd on my ps2 slim. the problem is it stucked on "loading games...." etc. please help me with my problem. does the usb advance has a compatibility with the hardware version of ps2? mine is 70006

ok great i got it to run with only 1 swap magic disk
i go it to boot the action reply for a test (small use hd)
great it worked be better when i do a real game
but frist i need to by a bigger usb hd
it works with fat32 as well but as a small delay 1 to 10 mins in decting the usb hd
any ways
could this do ps1 games?
could this do emulators like pgen?

can i get a copy of USBExtreme or Swap Magic 3.6 or an Armax .. coz i can't use USBAdvance v1 .. only Blank Screen Appear After i click at the list of the Game.

Can the older style ps2 be fitted with hd. I tried using the guide at top with no luck. Tried several games. USB Advance screen pops up hit x on game says loading and game never loads. Someone above said its slow so I waited and waited and waited ZZZZzzzzz.... no luck. Can someone please help?
