The reason it wants to initialize and format as NTFS first is to make the most space available to the Drive.
When I select the FORMAT tab in USBExtreme Utility, it shows me 3 drives which I have. You then select the one which is your USB
If you have already formatted it too FAT32, then you can always try to install the games and see if it will work..
I haven't done this in such a long time, I just remember that it worked when I used the utility to Format

Thanks so much for your help, I will be fine from here on as soon as I know if I can use a DVD-R instead of a CD-R.
Could you also point me out to a good game compatibility list for USB Extreme, all the ones I find are old and not event there.
Thanks for all your help, much appreciated.

Well you could but you would firtt have to extract the .bin file of USBAdvance then open Nero and create a DVD UDF/ISO
Then open the folder you extracted too, and copy them all over to the compilation and burn it.
It should work, but I have never done it.
Do you have a modchip or using Swap Magic?
Here is a pretty good guide to USB compatibility

I have a:
>FAT PS2 (SCPH 39000)
>It is using a Mod chip (I'm not sure what kind, but it can play back-up games direct.)
>I have a pen drive 16GB (FAT32 format)
>& I also have a USBadvance CD
I did all the instruction on how to play backup games via USB, I insert the CD & it loads USB advance, I inserted the pen drive with 2 of my backup games, namely: Kingdom Hearts & FFXII it was able to detect both of my games, I select a game and hit "X" it gives me a message saying to wait while game is loading, I did spent max 30 minutes waiting but game does not load it's stuck on that screen.
What am I doing wrong?
--is it because my ps2 is using a mod chip?
--is it because the games are not compatible?
--or am I just missing something else?
please help, sure I can play games direct. But the point is I want to extend the lifespan of my Lens, because I play 8+ hours a day.

I have a link to a compatibility thread just a couple posts above you.
According to it both games are compatible.
It could be your pen drive, yet you can load your games from it.
So I can't say for sure.If you have another drive you could try, it would rule it out.
The mod chip usually affects USBAdvance when you start it and gives a black screen.
Does your modchip have any boot manager software with it. I would say if it does to disable the macrovision in it if it does.

Aperantlly some chips can cause issues with usb advance but from what youve said if you can see the games I assume you have usb advance working corectlythere is a compatabilty list here
http://list.sksapps.com/index.php?page=indexk.html
A lot of games dont work with USB advance and there doesnt seem to be any sign of an update in the near future can you try another game one that is listed as working that should confirm if its an incompatability issue

No, my modchip does not have any boot manager. It just loads the game directly, no software, no swapping needed. If it has something to do with macrovision, I wonder how to turn it off? I'm really clueless on what kind of modchip I'm using.
Anyway, I'm going to put another game and try it. Thanks for the response.

Does this procedure work with the fat ps2?? I think mine is v9 or 10. on the back it says 5001 3d. The reason I am asking is that after I boot up with swap magic 3.6 cd and swap for my usb advance cd-r, it tells me that it is not a valid ps2 disk. Am I doing something wrong?? I am using power iso to burn the bin img. Do i need to use the Alcohol 120% in order to do it correctly.

Try burning it with imgburn at 12-16x speed and see if it works then.
If not you can load the elf file right from the USB drive using your swap magic.

How do I run it directly from the USB drive. I tried that and all it says is that it is not a valid ps2 disk. I apologize, but im a newbie when it comes to this sort of thing. I have opened the bin file, transfered the dummy.bin, and the other two files to my USB HDD in a file called "SWAPMAGIC" and renamed the .elf file to "SWAPMAGIC.ELF". I am not sure as to what else I am supposed to do. Oh, I have also correctly installed the games to the HDD. Once they are on the HDD, do I have to put them into the "SWAPMAGIC" folder or not. I am thinking not. Am I missing something?? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just download the USBAdvance.elf
Make your folder named "SWAPMAGIC" and place on the root of the USB drive.
place the usbadvance.elf in the SWAPMAGIC folder, and rename it too SWAPMAGIC.ELF
Then start up your SM CD OR DVD, with USB drive plugged into PS2.
It should find the ELF file and load USBAdvance.
So you have all that correct, and no the games don't go inside the SWAPMAGIC folder.
They are just installed to the drive.

Well, I have done that...drive formatted fat32, Swapmagic folder created, USBAdvance.elf placed in the folder and renamed it to SWAPMAGIC.ELF. plugged in the drive and turned on the ps2 (btw, it is a fat one spch 5001 date code 3d, i think that makes it a v10). Swapmagic goes to the startup splash screen and just freezes there. The light on my drive is just steady, not flashing as though it is being accessed. HELP MEEEEE

Yes USBAdvance will work on your PS2.
what type of USB drive are you using? You may have to try a different one.

I am using an Iomega 250 GB external usb HDD. I hope I don't have to buy another as they are not cheap. Does the drive need to be formated ntfs or fat32?

Well I know Iomega 160 works, so the 250 should work.
First format drive with Windows xp as NTFS, then use the USBExtreme utility to format the drive as FAT32
Then use USBEXtreme windows mode client software to format and copy games to the USB drive
http://www.hdadvance.com/download/
The main reason you will get the "loading screen" is either because of a modchip, or the drive is not compatible with the USBExtreme

Still not working, SM is just freezing prior to going to the "load program" screen. HDD not being accessed either. I am just not sure what to do next. I have followed all of the procedures to the letter and still no joy. Is there a work around??

Well if your SM is freezing, that is another issue, either the disc itself or clean your laser.
Or there is a problem with the hdd itself, and SM can't access the file.
Do you have a small usb pen drive you can try. Even a 1gb or 2GB will work if its compatible.

USBAdvance does not like more than 1 partition on the USB drive and the ul_format program clearly states that you need to have the drive formatted as a single partition
What I do is just make folders for my other stuff.
Now the newer UsBLoaderAdv, could still be the same way
http://forums.afterdawn.com/t.cfm/f-50/p...806899/#4878401
There is a way to make more than 1 partition if you want to try it.
