I did this for my fat ps2, v7. I loaded viewtiful joe 2 and it worked perfectly.

I am not sure why you need to make a SWAPMAGIC folder on the hard drive, it simply is not needed.

What I did was format the hard drive with the utility. Then I boot USBAdvance CD with Swap Magic 3.6

Plug in USB hard drive, and load the game. Zing!

Hi I have managed to burn hdloader 0.8, get several compatible games onto a compatible hard drive using usb advance, but when i plug it in and load the hdloader I can see the list of games on the left.
But only one game Dave mirra's freestyle bmx loaded and it was extremly laggy and when I clicked to load the level it froze, any ideas why its so slow?
Isn't the usb 1.1 on ps2 to slow to process a game through am i missing something?

Tgood. YOYO.

I think some of you are getting a little confused with the USBAdvance/USBextreme.

1. You need a mod chip or swap disk (such as Swap Magic) to do this. Something has to get around the initial protection to even use the external drive.

2. USBAdvance is the same thing as USBextreme but USBAdvance is FREE. USBExtreme comes with the swap discs in case you don?t have Swap Magic. That is why it?s not free.

3. You cannot copy Swap Magic discs. It?s not possible. They are specially made.

4. The USB hard drive method is much slower (laggy) and has horrible game compatibility. You often must try both NTSC and PAL versions until you find the one that works.

5. If you have a SlimPS2 and you?re dead set on using USB then USBADVANCE or USBEXTREME is your only way. HDLOADER, HDADVANCE, and all the other HDxxxxx tools WILL NOT WORK WITH USB.

I have a PS2 using USBadvance. I?ll explain exactly how I got it going.

What I have:
? Slim PS2 Model 77001
? External Maxtor Hard Drive 80GB.
? Swap Magic 3.6
? USBextreme utility (software to copy games to hard drive). This is also free.

Step One:
With the USB external drive connected to my computer, I loaded up the USBExtreme utility. With that utility I formatted the external drive. I then copied games one at a time from ISO or DISC to the external hard drive. It takes a long time to copy!!! About 5-10 minutes for a DVD.

Step Two:
I made a directory on the external hard drive called SWAPMAGIC. I then copied all the contents of the USBAdvance to that directory. Finally I renamed the USBADVN.ELF to SWAPMAGIC.ELF.

Step Three:
I hooked the USB external drive to the PS2 via the USB port.

Step Four:
I put the Swap Magic Disk and turned the PS2 on.
At this point the Swap Magic automatically boots the USBAdvance on the external hard drive. All the games that I copied are listed and I press X to play one.

As I stated before, the compatibility is horrible. When the games don?t work, I burn them to disc instead and just use the Swap Magic directly with the hard drive disconnected. The Swap Magic works normally and allows a simple swap of discs. I only put games on the external if they are known to work with it.

BOTTOM LINE:
You can turn your slim into a fat using HDcombo. However you can buy a used fat PS2 for much less. You?ll have a lot more compatibility success and speed over the USB method.

hi everyone

i followed these instructions and for now it works. copied the first game to the hdd Granturismo 4 and it works fine.

Getting it to work with just the one swap magic disc(no need to swap 2 discs) :
-Plug in your USB HDD, install drivers and format it in windows to NTFS (you can right click on the drive and hit format)
-Open up the USB EXTREME tool (on your computer) and click on the Disc Format tab and then click Format.
-Burn USB ADVANCED to a cd. (burn the .bin using a program like nero or alcohol 120 while selecting BURN IMAGE! you are not actually burning the .bin as a data file...its an image)
-Create a folder called SWAPMAGIC on the hdd. Inside the folder place the contents of the USB ADVANCE CD. ( they should be dummy, system and USBADVN.ELF )
-Rename USBADVN.ELF to SWAPMAGIC.ELF
-Stop the USB HDD and plug it into your PStwo. Now put in the USB ADVANCE cd ( either using the modchip or booting up with swap magic v3.6)
-A screen that says USB ADVANCE or USB EXTREME should pop up and then it will go to a list where games should be. If this happens.. congrats... you did it right. Now scroll down to see how to install games.

when you boot your ps2 the usb advance screen pops up immidiatly.
i have a "thick" ps2. schp 39004. But i have to say that i never had to use the burned usb advance cd.

So for me this guide was ok.

Thank you for writing this

Great!

I noticed that you're putting the USBadvance CD in the PS2 though. You shouldn't need to. As long as the USBadvance is on USB hard drive, renamed to SWAPMAGIC.ELF, it should just load with only the swap magic disc.

NVM, didn't see those last two lines.

I have the following
Slim PStwo SCPH-79001
Magic Swap 3.8 (coder)
40gb Hard Drive with External Enclosure.

I used usbextreme to format the hard drive and to load the game.
I use the magic swap 3.8 cd version to load up usbadvance. It loads fine and I see my hard drive with the games. When I load the games, it goes to a black screen and doesn't move at all. Can I get help?

You cannot use a copy of Swap Magic unless you have a modchip. The discs are specially pressed and cannot be copied with normal home equipment. You need a real copy of Swap Magic 3.6.

The USB Advance goes on the USB hard drive. The files are copied to a folder named SWAPMAGIC. The usbadvance files are placed in there, renaming the USBADVN.ELF to SWAPMAGIC.ELF.

Here's how it works.

You load up the PS2 with the REAL swap magic disc. The copy protection on the PS2 is spoofed. The usbadvance ELF which is now in the SWAPMAGIC folder on the hard drive gets booted automatically. Once it loads, you select the game to play.

I generally download and burn games to dvds... that works... i have got my ps2 moded for pirated games.. but does swap magic discs require a special mod...???

If you have a mod then you can just throw the USB advance CD in the PS2 and it should detect the USB drive.

i have read most of the claims but i still havent found a clear discussion about usb hdd's that will run on modded PS2's without other tools(swap magic, etc) well except for usbextreme which i am still using to copy games to the hdd...

all i wanna know is, will the usb hdd will automtically detected by a modded PS2?
i actually removed the lenses coz its burned out..and that's the 3rd one....and found out about usb hdd's...but wasnt sure if it is automatically read by a modded unit like mine...

here's my specs:
PS2 (700011)
super7 modchip

MAX 32 memory card
Sony PS2 SCPH-70011
and a cheap china Super7 E-17???

hey...i've just read something from another forum site about modded ps2's...

they say swap magic is worthless if you already have a modded ps2 coz it'll also run backups, the same as swap magic will...

but it doesnt state 'USB HDD' backups so its not yet too clear for me...

i'll be experimenting first on my modded ps2, see if it could work on an HDD with only using usbextreme...

Hello everybody !
I need some help with my PS2,it´s a slim one,i wonder if someone can publish an fully compatible cd with the USB-advance and the USB extreme on if that is someone nice out there that can do that, and i wonder two things to also, and the first is following : If i burning a cd to the PS2,do it have to be in the .cue format? and the second question is,can´t you do an CD with instructions to the PS2 that it don´t need to read from the laser, just one of the USB-ports,i mean,i have hard about that the USB is not a 2.0,but i have look in my manual and there they say it´s 2.0 USB ports that are plug and play, and there a third question come, don´t the PS2 support plug and play drivers that are formated in the PS2 read-format?
Thanks for the Tutorial.
