Hold on here a second Piledrive. I think you are missing the point.
Firstly, if you were a succesful musician, you would not worry about the p2p problems as the succesful musicians find that even those who download their songs for free, still will buy their CD.
Secondly, it has also been proven that those who download a song from Kazaa and like it, are more likely to go out and buy the CD, than if they had never heard the song.
So....think of Kazaa as a ground for promotion. You give away 'freebies' to those (the downloaders) in the hope that they like your songs and buy your product. However, if you were a rubbish artist, you may find that those people (the downloaders) decide not to buy your music.
Now tell me....who does that reflect badly upon. You or the downloader. Maybe you should give up on the music and try your hand at something else.

Bonton, I see what you are saying about downloading software. However, the $1000+ software packages are aimed at businesses and enterprise, not at the home consumer. That is beacuse the home consumer can get away with pirated software, whereas the business has the legality side of the matter to deal with.
However, I believe that useful softwar around $10 should be abolished (now here me out). Persons producing this should produce it for free, but ask for small donations to be given. When i downloaded DVD Shrink, i donated $1 to the cause. This will help to produce better future releases. A lot of people do donate.
Let me ask another question to all who answered this thread. Do any of you ever record a program off the TV when you are out? That is stealing! You are infringing upon the copyright protections that those programs have in place. Let only those who do not do that, lecture us (the P2P Users) on the legalities and moral issues of our actions.
So Mr PileDrive, i do believe that would rule you out! Atually i would be certain that rules everyone out here! Deny if you must, but its true.

Give me a break, I feel like I'm going to get sick.. The internet was not created by software companies, or the music industry. It wasnt so long ago that you could connect to other computers for FREE. Now you have to pay $25.00 per month or more, so that hundreds and thousands of music companies and software companies can hit you with advertisements & useless pop ups.
If you download software from kazaa then "Shame on you". Most software is close to nothing. The fact is Piledrive is no more a musician that I am, and I don't even know how to hold a guitar. LOL....
If he's not making any money from his music, then it's becasue he spends to much time on the internet and not enough time making music!!!!!
The use of file sharing has been around for years, going back to the days of the invertion of the modem. As any Linux user knows, for every program made for windows, there is a free equivelant for Linux.
People like piledrive think if they can stop file sharing, then they will also make more money. If piledrive makes good music, then it would make good money.
Piledrive, do you have a web site? Maybe we can go there and sample your music, Many artists allow us to hear a small sample of each song on there web site. Do you offer that?

Oriphus has made my point for me. He says ?That is because the home consumer can get away with pirated software, whereas the business has the legality side of the matter to deal with.? It?s the legality side of it that makes it stealing and those of us that do it thieves. Getting away with it doesn't change what it is or what we are.
I can?t understand what Theos is trying to say. What on earth does ?Most software is close to nothing? mean? And how does he have all this knowledge about Piledrive, ?The fact is Piledrive is no more a musician that I am, and I don't even know how to hold a guitar?? I guess that he?s physic or just very, very clever. The Linux/Windows debate is not for here but I run Linux on a multi-boot system and it?s just not for the casual user. You have to be an enthusiast with a bit of knowledge to make nearly every bit of hardware and software work. Plug ?n? Play is not a Linux concept.
But back to the subject at hand. It?s really just human nature. Nobody pays for something they can get for free. And we all know how to get everything for free because we?ve found a safe and easy way to steal it. You guys are all in denial. If we could do all our shopping for free and at no risk the vast majority of us would. It would be theft it you take it from Tesco and it?s theft if you take it from Microsoft or Lavasoft, Sony Records or Gillian Welch. It makes no difference.
I live in England and Dela is in Ireland. So for us everything is too expensive. Absolutely every bloody thing is over priced. That?s why they call it ?Rip Off Britain? in the papers. If I use the logic you guys use re the high cost of CDs and software I can justify stealing anything. A big reason not to is that I might get caught. File sharing makes it safe to steal. So I do. So most of you do.
If you guys are claiming that you don?t behave like this, what the hell do you use file sharing applications for? I don?t seem to meet any of you online as there everybody is doing exactly what I?m doing. Stealing.
I?ve got no idea at all how the music and software industries are going to cope with this. Whatever they come up with it will have to cost something. We all know how to get it for free. How can they compete with that? Software might not be hit as hard as music. Anyone can download an MP3 and play it but software often takes a bit more effort and requires a little bit of knowledge. I think most of the people I work with have probably downloaded MP3s but, unlike us here, most of them still get their software from PC World and just don?t know that you can download anything you could possibly want.
Let the bonton roulay...

So because I have some free time I am not a musician? I can't have a break? You obviously don't know any musicians. I could care less if you live in L.A. I travel there at lease twice a month for business. So don't act like you know more then you do. I am done with you losers on here. The only one that knows what the hell he is talking about is Bonton. The rest of you are thieves plane and simple. And to answert the question about recording off of the t.v..... NO I DO NOT! I don't even watch t.v.

Piledrive: Don't watch TV....hmmm interesting. A computer nerd who can strum a guitar, i bet you are well proud of yourself! By the way, my mum babysat for Andrea Corr and Enya. I've met both.
Bonton, well said! You obviously put a lot of thought into your answer, which is more than i can say about some, and i admire that. I agree with you. I live in Ireland and its just not feasible to be purchasing software on the scale that i use it.
Software companies are well aware of the problem of piracy. So many pieces of software are now aimed gereally at the Business user as it is easier to police that side of the market.
You know what the ironic thing is about the music industry? They are spending more money on preventing piracy. Who pays for that? The music company? Not a chance, it is passed on to the consumer. All this does is push the inflated price of CD's even further.
The sensible attitude to adopt would be to lower the price of CD's, therefore encouraging the consumer to purchase more. In effect, the music industry is adopting the economic law of supply and demand in reverse. Now thats messed up!
PileDrive, im only winding you up anyway. If you are a succesful musician, i wish you all the best with your music. I also understand the frustration you would be going through seeing yourself loose $1000's or even $100,000's in lost revenue through piracy. However, as far as i can see, it is a battle that won't be won!
Chris
P.S. What is your music genre PileDrive?

You are talking about general CD sales profits i presume? Thats surely not correct. Anyway, major artists make a lot or their money through exclusive interviews and advertisment.

Ok, let me just say, none of you know me! Not you bonton, not you piledrive! so how can you call me a thief?? I already said that i buy albums and buy what i like to get an original. Do you need a pic of my cd collection or something?? Is that how far you have to go in this place to get your f***en point across??
Yes it pissed me off when i was called a thief because i give more money to artists than i ever did before i used p2p! But you know what? I dont even matter anymore! Whilst i was in here debating this, a girl i know who was raped by 4 guys was in hospital after trying to kill herself because everybody has turned on her, all her friends, family etc.. And the night she did it, she was calling me while i was at a 21st birthday party just looking to talk! And i wondered where she was. mt text's werent getting to her phone and she wasnt textin me. So when i was reading over this thread, i realised, this shit doesnt matter to me. Why should i argue over it if i'm not the one who openly is download full albums and warez and shit?? I'll tell you why!! Because i'm sick of assholes thats why! The RIAA are a bunch of assholes!! Even though i bought so much, they would still take me to court i bet if i downloaded an album! They pick on everyone, abuse their power, threaten kids and their parents and think they have the right to do it because they can! I hope they go down in flames! All this whole mp3, p2p argument has done is expose who they really are!
Look at Piledrive, i dont know who he is but i know one thing, he thinks he can call everyone thieves and losers because he is an artist and probably has too much money as it is! The only thing bigger than his bank account is his ego i bet! Look over his posts again, and you will understand what i mean! 22 years he says he has been playing! well then when he was growing up, p2p wasnt availible! I'll bet my legs that if p2p was there when he was 16 he would have been using it.
Let me tell you a little bit about me growing up! Metallica were my hero's. I am a drummer so Lars was my God! I still love them even though i dont agree with their view on p2p! I know that if i was part of the Metallica family i would probably think the same they do which is why i still have respect for them! I downloaded a few songs from St. Anger before I bought it and I highly recommend that you guys buy it because it kicks ass!
Now to point out a few things i find well strange about this thread!!
Quote: I am done with you losers on here. The only one that knows what the hell he is talking about is Bonton. The rest of you are thieves plane and simple.
That was Piledrive!! Ok so I'm a thief plane and simple. Firstly, that's not how you spell plain mate! But thats not the point I want to make. You just said that the only guy who openly admitted that pirates stuff knows what he is talking about and basically said he is not a loser or a thief! but hold on a second, didnt you say the following in your first post??
Quote: You are pathetic and make me sick!!!!!!
That was aimed at people like bonton! So how do you explain that?
Quote: Hey asshole! First off I am more of a musician then ANYONE you will ever know. I have just finished my 3rd cd and I will not tell you who I am no matter what. But you have heard of me I promise. I just do not approve of stealing no matter how you slice it!
There's that ego! You are playing for 22 years and you are on your 3rd cd? So really you are not exactly a legend are you? And you dont know anything for sure man, any one of us could be bigger than you are now if we made it! Now i'm judging you from the things you said on this thread, for all i know you could be the best guy to get along with ever or for all i know i could have one of your cd's in my collection, hmm let me think, who has recorded 3 cd's, perhaps you could be corey taylor from slipknot and u are refering to the album you recorded with stone sour but i'll never know! lol
Now Piledrive, before you go crazy and post a big huge message back to me, remember you attacked me first when you said i was a thief and i assure you i'm not!

After reading the S_ _T you posted and how bad of an attitude you have, I would NEVER buy your CD's....period.....period....So it was wise of you to not tell us who you "really" are.
I still don't understand why you would have a problem with me seeing your web site? If you have one. I mean, after all these years of making music I'm sure you have a web site, right?

Dela, sorry to hear about your friend. I hope she pulls through and makes a complete recovery. It really can be a wicked world.
My posts to this forum have contained no abuse or personal attacks. My posts to this or any other forum will never contain abuse or personal attacks. I far prefer a reasoned argument. My friends tell me I could argue with a fence post all night and I don?t have any problem with that.
I steal copyrighted material that I have no legitimate claim to and I believe that makes me a thief. You guys do the same thing and call yourselves pirates. You could say it?s just semantics but I still think you?re all in denial. Anyway if you were pirates you?d all have parrots, eye patches, wooden legs and big boats. You show me your parrot and I?ll show you mine.
If you're all so honest and squeaky clean what are you doing with these file sharing applications? If you're not sharing copyrighted material that you have no claim to then what are you sharing? I don't get it.

Those are your words......
No I am not pshycic. Nor am I clever. I just read. I read ALL piledrives posts. Then I came to an obvious conclusion. "elementary my dear Watson"
As for you not understanding what I was saying, I'm from California, an sometimes we get a little TOOOOOOOOOOOOO laid back.
On ocasion I type the way I talk. LOL... My apologies.
But, I have always been albe to read what other people type, no matter how unfinished the sentence may be!
When a sentence doesn't make sence the first time you read it, You read it again. You should try a little harder.
So Bonton, you NEVER attacked on a personal level.... Care to change that....
Just chill with the self righteous Judgemental, know it all attitude..
Not everyone who uses P2P is stealing. Not every file on P2P networks are copyrighted.
Some people make porn at home and WANT to share it, "voyuerism" They use Kazaa. E-mule, Winmx, and other PSP's to accomplish the task.
Don't be so quick to judge what you do not understand, becasue you loose your credibility.
P.S. I do know how to hold a guitar. It was an attempt at a more gentle sarcasm.

My comment was also sarcasm and not abuse. You have a very thin skin. Even when your post invites a sarcastic reply. I'm commenting on whats in the posts. You're commenting on things you can't possibly know about, ie Piledrives private and offline life. See the difference? I really don't want to get into personal rows. Especially as it's quite possible that we have downloaded stuff from each other. Lets agree to disagree.
I accept what you say about other uses for file sharing but I'm not new to this stuff, just to this forum. You say that not every file being shared is copyright material but what I see being shared is almost entirely copyrighted material. The 1% that isn't makes no difference.
I've probably said more than enough on this subject for the time being. That's it, I've shut up now. (Sighs of relief all round)

Listen for a second now!! The only copyrighted material I download is mp3 to see if an album is any good! if its not i have it deleted, if it is I buy the fucken album it is on and no i'm not in denial. Not everybody who uses a filesharing program is a thief so just remember that! Though I am glad you are especially for the mp3 because it's another person on the list of those bringing the RIAA and other such organisations down on their knees! I dont do it myself but I cause a helluva lot of it with the emule tutorial and my posts in the filesharing forum. I dont download warez either, I dont need any so why bother? The only thing I would ever admit to is the odd movie that would be in theatre that is not showing in my own theatre and the funny thing about that is, since i've been doing that, i've bought way more dvd's too!
And so finally, I'm not a thief because i dont download albums and print the cheap lookin covers from the net, i buy the album and when i get a movie i dont keep its cheap quality and get cheap covers for that on the net too, when im finished watching it its gone and if it's any good it's bought when released and retailed!

c'mon piledrive, let us know who you are. think about it, next tiome someone goes to download your music (if it's even real), they might not just based on this thread. I seriously doubt you are more of a musician than me, but then again we'll never know. I can't understand why you wouldn't take this chance to get your name out and make it publicly known about your stand on P2P. we all know people, and we all could spread the word that "this musician really hates p2p and here is proof (this thread). bu since you are reluctant to state who you are, i have no choice to believe that you are nobody. I have made 6 cd's and sat in on lots of others and i know for a fact that no one has heard of me. but since i upload most of my stuff to IRC bots, I know my music is out there and being heard, to me thats all that matters. I dont want a music career, i am very happy with the life i have, but i still want my work heard. any true musician would feel the same way. It might be a good idea to state who you are, I mean like if you are kevin dubrow from quiet riot (yes the one that lived with his mom shortly after the career took a shit), i doubt think you have anything to worry about from p2p, i'm sure there's only a handfull of people that would want that stuff.
plus i'm sure that if people heard directly from an artist about how p2p is effecting them, they might think twice about downloading the music, i know i would definatly not download anything if i knew you couldn't feed your kids (or whatever) becuase i was downloading your stuff. so c'mon, whats the big deal, spill the beans, tell us who you are. I have the most broad spectrum of musical taste of anyone i know, i mean i listen to everything from folk, to rap, to calypso, to rock, to classical. and i seriously doubt i've ever heard of you. but it's up to you to prove me wrong.

Bonton, don't try to turn this around. I NEVER mislead anyone in here. You are the one who said you don't attack on a personal level, not me!
All I'm trying to do is get Piledrive to TELL THE TRUTH! and stop hiding his true issue.
All I'm saying is how can he have so much free time to post and still be up until 3 in the morning making music? I don't get it..... Any passionate artist would be devoted to the music.
you said 1% of the stuff downloaded on P2P's is copyrighted. Where did you get that info? On Kazaa alone there are over 880,715,550 files. Did you do the math? I think not!!!!!
Show me the link to the web site that you got this FACT from? Please,,,, I really want to see it.
