I did a side-by-side comparison of the Toshiba HDDVD and the Samsung BluRay player and posted my comments in the HD forum:

I did the comparison on a 1080P 60" Sony SXRD using HDMI connections. Ideally I should have compared the same film on both machines but since there were no releases yet that were on both formats this was not possible. On BD I viewed XXX, Underworld, and Flying Daggers. On HDDVD I watched Serenity, Chronicles of Riddick, and Apollo 13.
I had no complaints with audio from either machine. Dolby Digital soundtracks were clean, crisp and vivid on my Rotel proc/amp and B&W speakers.
Picture quality was the parameter that separated the machines. Bottom line: the $500 Toshiba HDA1 totally outclassed the $1000 Samsung BDP1000. High def movies from my Comcast cable box even looked better than the initial BD offerings. We discussed the possible reasons for this in the thread above. Also see diabolos' thread here:

Like he said this is only round 1 and I am eagerly awaiting the next player from the BluRay camp. I have preordered the Sony BDPS1 which is set for an October release but if the Pioneer comes out earlier I might try that. For now the Toshiba is giving me the best picture quality from any source so far.

very interesting dblbogey7, hopefully the blueray image quality will be better on other players. But this makes me wonder how will the ps3's image quality be.

Image quality for games will be outstanding on the PS3.
Movies will be a different matter. The way I see it the only way the BluRay camp will win is if it abandons MPEG2 encoding and go with the more advanced codecs now being used by the HD-DVD camp. Ced summed it up pretty nicely:

Isnt this an incredibly bad sign for sony?I mean this is the MAIN reason folks are having to spend $200 more on the ps3 than the xbox 360 is because the Blu-ray format being used?Its no secret that the Blu-ray is the reason for sony having to charge so much for the ps3...well,must food for thought.Looks like MS doesnt look so stupid afterall by sellinh the HD-DVD drive seperate...........

its older encoding, and im sure it was cheaper for them at the moment. no biggy right now,
they need their cash. but if they dont step up they will get smashed in time.

guess im an addict to...Man i love this site. Its inforamtive and lets you help others as well so rock on fellas post away dont let ANYONE poop in your cornflakes and stop ya from postin.
With all the bad news sony is getting about the ps3 not going to make their quota for ps3's made and sold. analyst say the games will be too expensive and theyve already said they system is overpriced. Game developers in japan are furious with the ps3 with a whopping 92.29% saying its too costly to develop for and others saying its as much as their rent.with all that said it will still sell like vida guerra working a lemondae stand on a hot summers day chraing 5 bucks a cup!!!

U can upgrade everything but the HDMI
Bluetooth is a form of wi fi but sicne its a diffrent form they might sell one bluetooth upgrade and one wi fi upgrade.

BOTH system will get online,BOTH system will ahve the same chipset,however the low end PS3 is lacking the HDMI daughter card like thing that is attached(if tis not sodered onto it or part of the mobo I will be even more pised) in the PS3,one would think hey why not just make it a exspatin and sell it by itself for 200 and lower the PS3 price to 400..why oh why...becuse Sony no longer inovates they rehash,and when the rehashing dosent get them a profit they double the price *L*
I do like the PS3 alittle more than the 360 but sicne this price and 2 system ridiculousness its fallen almsot 3 poitns to be 1 point above the 360....
The PS3 has everythign the 360 dose not ture new hardware and a killer game lineup sicne it took the new format war head on it has alot of hurdales to get thru altho with the Upgrade abilty of its frimware/OS most of these can be fix its jsut a matter of gettign thier I ahve no dout the 360 will get soem form of HD DVD update inorder to not have any troubles palyign the thigns and with hollywood wanted to DRM all HD/BR stuff you know they have to make thigns upgrtadeable so it will work.

dont yo uthink this is alot of inforation for the casual gamer to delve into? I think this is why sony will be losing the casual gamer because of all of that and the price tag for games and the system will prove to be too expensive and once you lose a group of fans its tought to regain them. so they will lose the casual gamer and the japanese gamers with the ps3...

They tend to not give a rip about anythign includeing qauilty becsue they tend to buy anything...however I can see the price of the PS3 being a shotgun to the head of the mindless horde...
Gamers and hard core gamers are in search of the "THE GAME" and tend to be more picky from one system fanwhores to multi system gameing gods we be picky abotu what we play and buy.
I myself am a RPG whore..if its a RPG I will buy it or at least add it to my colelction *L* I did get Legaia 2 after all :P
However to me thees a diffrance between a crapy low end RPG and crappy High end RPG thats filled with BS ...like FFX or FFX2...I ahte BS in gameing.....its geting smellly......

basically simply put if u are simply an fps guy that could careless about multimedia and any othe genre get a x360 but if u want a variety of games and love alot of features get a ps3, everyoneelse get a wii

I enjoyed more of the fps on the PS2 than I did the Xbox and any FPSer worth thier salt needs Metroid Prime even tho I ahte the adventure style ontrolls *L*
the 360 would be ok for a FPSer but its still missing something,hell the PC is the same way fps wise...

im a sports guy so thats pretty much all i play and i occasionally dabble into gta/saints row style games.I loved call of duty but outside of sports im just really pick when it comes to games im not loyal to any other genre. i own table tennis,nba live(sucks),top spin 2,madden 06,oblivion( i suck at it),far cry(so so game),g.r.a.w(i totally blow at this game), call of duty(played and beat with ease then traded it in like a moron),condemned,kameo, and thats it.
upcoming games im buying = madden 07,saints row,gears of war,too human and a hoard of others.
dont know why i felt the need to share this but just showing my gaming interest.
back to the topic...wahts the general feel about the ps3 having two completely different skus? people feel pissed?happy? like they were lied to? or because sony didnt officially pinky promise its ok? im not getting one so im just curious to waht it feels like. me being a 360 fan heres how i feel. I feel happy because i got my console on launch day and havent had issues but im sure id be heated if i didnt get one or had issues hardware wise but since i dont im extactic. I also feel that both consoles will be extremely similar in all factes that are noteworthy so its like a i got the same console for better or worse a year before ps3 owners and paid $200 less and i can live with it if the ps3 in a tad better.I in my mind know the ps3 wont crap on the 360,now it may be better but not to the point where i feel i made the wrong choice. weighing it all in the balance i feel i made out, my gf is getting the wii so i guess i'll see how that is too...

I feel gameing on a whole is going down hill so buying a new syetem is pointless right now ,I a ebst off to get my DS replaced ,get a Xbox, and tag a Wii when Metroid 3 come sout hell I might even put off buying the new Zelda till then there are so many lil PS2 gams I want to get and paly
ZOE 1-2,FMA 1-2 (if 1 is good),DMC 1-3(I know 2 blows),Xenosaga 1-2,Kingdom hearts 1-2,FF12 (last new FF game I will fool with if its bad),Summoner 2,Shadow hearts psx-PS2,Star ocean,Onimsha 4, and 20 more....I guess if I cant think whitch one I want the most tag 20 worth a month minuim....mmmmmmm sicne I have FMA on the brain right now (finished the anme might watch it again *L* all 50 eps)

imagine with homebrewing, you could use a bluetooth mouse and keyboard to play the games.

as far as the two different skus, honestly i could careless only because i'll get the primo model anyway. i would have rather seen sony release one model and priced it for $550.
overall i'd say im happy about the ps3 and what it is going to offer. when i say "the ps3" take into consideration i speak of the 60gig model. IMO, E3 wasn't as disappointing as many made it out to be for sony. i got MOST of the important info i was waiting for, it was nice to see the ps3 finally playable, and future games looked pretty damn good...especially Assassin's Creed.
i don't think people should take things to heart when they change. ok, sony did state certain features to be available on the ps3 which were restricted/removed, but how many USB and HDMI outputs do we really need??? however, for those who do bitch about the loss or downsize of HDMI output....im curious, just how many of those individuals actually have sets to complement that feature, but of course for many its not actually what i just said, but rather the whole ordeal of "sony lied to us..." i will say im disappointed with the controller. i was actually looking forward to the boomerang style controller, simply because it was something "different." as for now the loss of rumble (IMO) is nothing major, and sticking with dualshake2 style is fine. i was also surprised when they said they will only launch the ps3 in black, although they typically showed it white/silver/black. im sure some people would have liked the other options, but all my audio/visual equipment is black, so it'll fit in nicely...
oh yeah...the only things that annoy me are the lack of online information, and the price of games....

I still ike my upgrader model more tho :P
realy... they have the tech to make simple upgrade slots for everythign the only thing I would not be sure about is the HDMI.
they would sell 5X the the base units(since the base unit would be 240) doing it like that and then make more profit off the games
more systems out = more game sales= more profit,
unless their going to max out PS3 games at 50 to offset the price of the PS3 all this just annoys me to no end.

After palying fps with a pad for 2 or 3 months I got as good as mouse and keyboard,even if you focus on head shots to get good at aiming it will only take a week of hardcore palying.
the only real diffrance with a mouse is more noobs can do headshots...,has anyone tried to make sentivity frimware for the analog sticks of any system yet?
god most newer fps either lack analog sentiivty adjust or full pad bining...took me more time than needed to play darkwatch good.....realy these devs need to think thigns out each FPSer has thier owen style as well as control pads not giveing games full control over thier control suxs cookie cutter controll designs are annoying on any game but are mind numbing on a fps.

@ZIppyDSM you wouldn't be doing anything against a mouse.It's not the keyboard that's so superior it's the mouse.The mouse has lot more resolution and is faster by the time you turn you would be dead.This is why console games use auto aim feature alot.So you can just click a button and it automatically gives you the shot.
Of coarse you would almost have to be at a desk because with a mouse you have to have it up to your stomach to feel comfortable wireless or not keyboard mouse isn't comfortable in the living room.

I have had my comp Enertainment center style in the lvieing room thos adjustable TV trays are very good at getting you comfy,sure they are not big enugh for a KB and mose but you can slap soemthign on it to balance out the KB and use the mouse.
Ever paly Turok 2 on the N64 it let you adjust the sencinty and such I got realy good at headshots on that game *L*
I find most newer games dont realy give you alot of controll options whitch blows...a mouse is jsut easier to handale to boot *L*
it takes time and skill to get a pad down right and the more cookie cutter the controll shceme the more annying it is to work it....
its about time soemone made a KB and mouse to PS2/Xbox/CG converter *L*
Altho what I would kill for is a device that can remap buttons and adjsut the senitvity of the pad......that would be worth a 50 spot in my book...if its got a nice coherant LCD disply I'd even shell out 80!

Yeah for me it was the opposite.I had used a gamepad my whole life since I was like 4 and I got a good pc and played with a game pad but I got smoked.Now granted the pc game pads have crappy emulated function and generally sucked compaired to a console gamepad.But it wouldn't matter these guys were so good with mouse and keyboard I couldn't do sh!t no matter what pad I was using.
I still have a hard time with mouse and keyboard especially with games like graw that use every freakin button on the keyboard lol.
