Bios version is 1306 a little old i think now dose anyone know of a good guide to updating my bios then?
thanks
BY the looks of that it does look like +11 on cpu and maybe +25 on your cores.
you should be able to use asus ez flash to update your bios from a usb stick its on their site.

What temperatures are you guys maxing out your Q6600's to? I believe Intel rated the temperature at 71 degrees, but is that for the individual cores or the CPU in general as everest reports as different numbers. Just bumping mine up to 3Ghz on air/stock cooler and watching prime95 for about 20 minutes the hottest cores peaked around 67, while the ""CPU"" temperature sat more around 58.

I think mine runs around 62-63 in a stress test, 55 in a real test.

I'm starting to think there is something wrong with my Mobo. Running Prime95 now for only a few minutes my cores are around 56-58 and my CPU temp is reporting as 233 degrees? Even now under idle with cores around 32-34 the CPU temp is reporting as 204. I guess i'll just ignore it from now on but it still has me kind of worried that something is amiss.

I doubt that the bios is going to change anything, but with a stock cooler, it becomes even worse. The coolers they ship with the 64x2s are worth all of about $2.98! You see the smallish box the CPU comes in and then the tiny box for the cooler, and LYAO!! Weighs only about 2/3 of what the same cooler from two years ago weighed. Just a machined aluminum block with a fan on it. A lot less fins to it too! Even the base itself is about half again as thick!
You also might look in the PC Health section in the bios and see what temps it reports!

Been reading the asrock site and the 5000 is ok on all bioses, so i guess there is nothing to do about your temp readings, where as the temps could easily be dropped as russ said. weird how many of the 5000 processors seem to have little glitches like this though.

You would need a thermal probe, preferably one that reads via an Infrared beam, for that. Not much you can do about it anyway, but your temps are at least a few degrees above the ambient room temperature, and not anywhere as low as you are showing in Everest. Did you check the PC health section of the bios? If they are agreeing with Everest, then the problem is on the Chip. If they are slightly higher than room temperature, it's Everest that's the problem!

Quote: Hi Just a quick question about cpu temps. I have a friends comeputer here and he has an AMD Athalon 64 x2 5000+ running stock speeds, and the temp are in the mid 50s
If those are idle temperatures then they are a little high they should read about 40c to 45c with a stock heatsink and fan. I would check to see if the heat sink is seated properly and that the heat sink isn't clogged with dust. If it doesn't come down then remove the heat sink fan, clean the heat spreader on the CPU and heat sink, then reapply thermal paste and try again.

To give you an idea of what normal temps are, Here's mine. This is an E6750 overclocked 33% with the CPU at 1.49v. At idle, your's should be about 1-2C higher using an Arctic Freezer 64. The 65mn 64x2 4800+ in the front room is running at 32C at the moment. It's 26C in here at the moment. Shows you the value of a decent aftermarket cooler! Note the core temps!

So far my overclocking hasn't seem to need to adjust the voltage at all. Is this an ideal situation where you only increase the voltage when you have to, or will keeping voltage on the low side stress the system somehow?

If it will boot up and remain stable, there's no reason to raise the voltage. A lot of the newer chips will OC pretty well with minimal if any added voltage. Mostly it depends on how far you OC it and how good your power supply is. Stress testing with Prime95 or Orthos will tell you if it's stable or not.

It depends on how high your overclock is set. Get a little extreme and you will have to raise the Vcore.

The ideal situation is the one that works. Some of us keep it simple. If it's hot then you need to cool it.;)

Hey all, what's clocking like it over there in your area? Lots of MHz's I hope. I have lost track of the last 6 months post and not sure if any were ever for me anyways. If for the slim chance I missed one, IM or email me directly as I will not spend too much time fishing through the many months of post.
I had a few IM's and I did my best to respond to all, so if I missed you, please try again and I will check in from time to time.

Good to see you Nuck!
I'm currently trying to stabilise a Q9550 E0 at 3825mhz. Problem seems to lie with RAM and chipset, but I haven't played with anything like GTL refs yet.

Buy some decent RAM and a good mobo and you won't have those issues. hehehee. :P
J/K Sammy... I'm sure you'll figure it out. Of course 3.7GHz on that chip is good too. :D
Me is jealous of the Q9550 ownership... me wants one... Of course I'm poor and have to many other responsibilities to buy something else right now. I'll save and see what happens. :P

Hehe, there's more decent RAM than 2x2GB PC8500C5 Dominator? Well, maybe PC9200 I guess... :P
The X38-DS4 is holding me back, as the P45 is the only chipset that can break 460FSB for a Quad core chip, but hey, not sure I'd want to be running 4Ghz on a regular basis, not on my 520W PSU anyway, even at 1.36V my idle power consumption is 20W higher than the 1.47V Q6600...

yup im back at it.i got some GOOD mem as GM said. so far it is living up to the hipe....only thing ive done so far is decrease my CPU multi to 8.5x. ive found a few with this same board find that the higher multis dont work to well for a higher OC. also loosen my mem up to 5-5-5-15 as instructed by a Mushkin rep.(yea got me some inside help)
good to see a actual manufacture rep tell you how to OC there product.
so no im getting ready to run the normal stress test to see what comes of this OC

I shouldn't say this prematurely but it does help when you use "good" products and not throw away crap from other manufacturers!! *crosses fingers* in hopes that OC is stable with present Mushkin RAM. lol. :P
Rob just stick that non-OC ram in a little machine for the wife or kiddies. It's still good ram I'm sure and will run fine for years at "normal" speeds. ;)
