yes it's more easier to use biro on printables, there is nothing unsafe about it, biro will not work on normal DVD's btw you would have to use a marker instead, no, markers are not recommended for printables as the ink cannot write properly on top of the disc compared to how well it writes on normal DVD media!

Thanks so much for the help with that BIGnewb.
So I gather it is going to be safe to stray as far away from those CMC's I've been using...
Verbatims it is.

Taiyo Yuden DVD+R and DVD-R are best of all the medias out there.

media id/codes:

DVD-R
TYG01 = burn at 4x since they're 4x max, can be done at 8x on most burners but i don't recommend it.
TYG02 = burn at 8x (these are cheapest and most available in the US)
TYG03 = burn at 8x or 12x if burner can do it and if you have a good burner. they are 16x and will burn great at 16x so they're up to you just don't burn them below 8x, they hate it

DVD+R
YUDEN00T02 = burn at 8x can be done at 8x on most burners but i don't recommend it unless you have the best burner there is. (they are very available but double price over TYG02 in the US)
YUDEN00T03 = burn at 8x or 12x if burner can do it and if you have a good burner. they are 16x and will burn great at 16x so they're up to you just don't burn them below 8x, they hate it (these don't exist in the US yet but are widely available in europe)

the second best are

Verbatim with ring code PAPAXXXXX made by CMC using MCC id code and dyes DVD+R and DVD-R

DVD-R
MCC01RG20 = burn at 4x since it's max is 4x can be done at 8x on most burners but i don't recommend it unless you have the best burner there is
MCC02RG20 = burn at 8x since it's max is 8x can be done at 12x on most burners but i don't recommend it unless you have the best burner there is
MCC03RG20 = burn at 8x or 12x if burner can do it and if you have a good burner. they are 16x but those two lower speeds come out better and more guaranteed given their variability.

DVD+R
MCC 002 = burn at 4x since it's max is 4x can be done at 8x on most burners but i don't recommend it unless you have the best burner there is
MCC 003 = burn at 8x since it's max is 8x can be done at 12x on most burners but i don't recommend it unless you have the best burner there is
MCC 004 = burn at 8x or 12x if burner can do it and if you have a good burner. they are 16x but those two lower speeds come out better and more guaranteed given their variability.

however verbatims are variable in regards to who made them. for best results and no to less DREs go for Yudens.

to get REAL GENUINE yudens buy from
shop4tech.com
supermediastore.com
rima.com
meritline.com

yudens are only made in JAPAN

verbatims are made in JAPAN, INDIA, SINGAPORE, TAIWAN

verbatim and yuden fakes are made everywhere else china is one

****FROM DIGITALFAQ.COM****
The thing that must be realized is that most media is produced by a relative small number of factories, located in several different places. These factories are mostly present in Taiwan, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, China, India, some European locations. There are more, but those are the largest ones. The best media generally comes from Japan and Singapore. The worst typically comes from Taiwan or China (in stores) and Hong Kong (online).

This being said, understand that the media brand means nothing. Apple is a great brand, but they do not make their own discs, instead outsourcing to MXL (Hitachi/Maxell) or MCC (Mitsubishi Chemicals). Verbatim became infamous in 2002 by switching from high-quality MCC ID media to the inferior CMC ID media, although they quickly returned to using MCC. Companies like Memorex, Fuji and Imation all outsource to media vendors. When buying media online always be aware of fake media too (see the fakes information farther down the page).

It is the media ID that is important, as it reveals the disc manufacturer. Unfortunately, this is not written on packaging or anywhere else. Companies want consumers to be oblivious to this sort of behind-the-scenes information. To learn the media ID code, a blank disc must be put into a computer DVD burner drive and the ID read by a special utility. Some burning software reads the code by default (DVD Decrypter, for example, in ISO write mode). There are also a handful of freeware or trialware tools available:

For Windows: DVD Identifier (free), DVDInfo (free), DVDInfoPro (trial)
For Macintosh OS X: DVD Media Inspector (free)
For Linux: DVD+RW-mediainfo (free)
****FROM DIGITALFAQ.COM****

instructions saying to burn at lowest speed are outdated. today's burners burn much better at 8-12x than the burners of 5 years ago at 2x.

i burn games at 12x with PIF levels staying below 60 with spikes at 2 only with 0 problems.

i may be a noob here but in terms of media and burners. i've tested a crapload of media using best burners of the day.

BEST BURNERS:

Benq 1620/1640/1650/1655/18xx series
Liteon 6s series (ex 165H6s), 18aX1, and 20aX1 series
Pioneer 110/111/112 series
LG h10/h12/h22/h42 series

the rest aren't worth it and/or don't do DVD+R bitsetting to DVDROM.

a good free burn program to use is imgburn 2.2.0.0 i use this for everything works great

remember to get guaranteed yudens get them from the 4 online stores above

hope ya'll find this thread useful

Just wondering if the Taiyo Yudens are carried in any known retail stores, or are they only available online? If so, which stores would good genuine ones most likely be found(Best Buy, Circuit City, Radio Shack, and CompUSA are all major retailers I can think of in my area, for example)?

While I was shopping in Wal-Mart tonight, thanks to the threads here, I took a look over and seemed to more easily identify which disc were which; at least in the case of some Maxell's I had thought of purchasing (the series apparently is labeled "High Grade", with the label saying they were Made In Japan; whereas the other Maxell variations they had available almost all said they were Made In Taiwan). They had some Verbatim 16X Datalife Lightscribe DVD+R's and DVD+R DL's that I thought might be worth a look, but wasn't sure and wanted to wait 'til I could cross check online when I got home.
Well, I'm pretty sure I've yet to fully understand completely the concept behind identifying better media, but I did just want to thank those people who have contributed in sharing their knowledge/experience of these things with and for those of us just getting to know about/of it. Thanks for all the help! :)

Anyone know the manufacturer of the Verbatim Lightscribe DVD+R 16x disks? Haven't been able to find a manufacturer code online. I'm expecting it to be MCC, but wanted to check here just in case.

Also, is MCC quality really that bad or will it work okay? Mainly looking into the LS DVD+R's for aesthetics, but hopefully they're well made too, we'll see.

And finally, since these are DVD+R's, I was wondering if DVD+R worked with V4 PS2's. I've been looking into this too and I've been getting conflicting reports.

Thanks

verbatim is good but DVD+R is where your luck ends.the early ps2's were only compatible with DVD-R and the v7 or v8 and up started to be compatible with DVD+R so i would say dont buy them.many people complained that they bought +r and it wouldnt work.some people had success but what are the chances of that?so its your risk.

This thread isnt 100% accurate.
It mostly depends on the burner your usinmg and what media it likes if a burner likes Ritek's and hates sony's even though the sony is higher here which it shouldnt be the riteks would do and have better quality after burning it in that burner but others might be different you need to check out tests for your burner which people like on www.cdfreaks.com have tons of them every burner has its best media list look at it.
2nd:
According to this Princodiscs are horrible and your Ps2's laser will wear like crazy but to my experience how come that iam using a Ps2 from 2001 V3 I got it on Xmas 2001 with a Modchip since Feb 2002 and all ive used since about Dec 2002 are riteks and I have yet to chnage the laser and its still loading perfectly without lag even on new games liek FFXII it works great.
Explain to me?
or is this thread not all true?

afterdawn itself is very accurate.for you its luck.its also good not to play ps1 games because that usually helps the laser wear out as most ppl end up getting disc read errors on silver discs but not blue ones.

How can be lucky having a laser that dosent wear out.
I think Princo discs are underated so is ritek on that list ritek should be grade 1 near the top and cmon TDK? they suck for ps2 games.

ritek are under rated tdk are over rated.princo should be B Grade but certainly not A Grade.

You say so I dont.
I will say so if you:
Put Ritek into A class
Move TDK down the order bottom of A class and move Princo into Mid B class that is accurate.

Physical Format Information (ADIP):
Disc ID: SONY-D21-00
Book Type: DVD+R

This is the disc I have been using for my PS2. I've burned over 50 things to these Sony DVD+Rs I buy from Wal-Mart. 100% success rate. I've been using a SONY DVD RW DRU-820A 1.0b (ATA) as the burner and it works really well. I can burn ISOs at full speed for my PS2 and they all play flawlessly.

So BenQ's are good to use for PS2? I bought a 100 pack sometime last year and have been using them for burning my divx/mp3s to and have yet to find any that have crapped out. Maxell on the other hand.... I've had CRC errors up the arse. :(

Last I checked, Future Shop sold the BenQ's.

Just got in a new batch of Taiyo Yuden DVD+R from Meritline...and they don't seem to work. Tried games on old batch of Yudens and they still work fine...tried it on a test iso from one of my old games and no go... So it's not the iso file that's the problem.
How can I tell what particular type of TY disc I have??? the only markings I can see are TG000041 and 0803, and stamped in the clear plastic- EH617A404780PG I can just about read that one...
Any help?

What a great little program... Thank you very much.
Well, they're the real thing (DVD+R/Yuden000/T02) I've been using Alcohol120% like I always do - on the same crappy burner I always use... don't know what could be wrong. Guess I'll just go over my preferences one more time and make another coaster.... [figured out that my last batch was DVD-R, and I have an old console, so I assume that's the problem... any advice (I've got GoW2DVD5 here good to go fer chrissakes!)other than buy a load of -Rs???]
