This is very misleading, especially the % rate because I used hundreds of those cheap and even the good media and they all work well with mine. I never had a ps2 that couldnt read any media I threw at it.

That's good, but keep in mind that the crappy media will start to work bad after a certain number of months. Not only that, you're also killing your PlayStation 2's laser. I can't stay this enough, if this thread says what media is crap and which will become bad and that will kill your PlayStation 2's laser, don't even bother getting it.

actually those arent true because Ive used one of the cheap medias on my ps2 for over 2 years and the lazer never had any problems even with the playstation being bought used, however, I do find that one of the reasons why its cheap is because once you scratch it, it will go bad, unlikes the better ones that still play, but that isnt mentioned anywhere on the thread

Maybe, but the main reason crap media goes bad is because the dye will harden. This will cause some problems with whatever you burnt, which may then skip, act weird, or crash. I haven't really experienced that, since all media that's junk stays far away from my PlayStation 2. But wait and see, one day, constant use of crappy media will make you get the "disc read error" message because your laser is burnt out. You must also be careful with the PlayStation 2 model. Certain models(Versions 9, 10, and 12) have serious problems with the laser. Crap media might instantly(not exactly) kill a Version 12's laser unless it has a laser fix. It will also burn a chip that controls the laser's focus coils on a Version 9/10 that can burn out or destroy your laser's ribbon cable. Make sure you don't have any of those versions, because the laser will probably be on its way out soon.

dt37210- That's Verbatim with Mitsubishi Chemicals dye. That's part of the #1 media. Even better, if your burner supports booktyping(specify your burner's brand to determine if it does or doesn't support it), you can use that to make it easier for your PlayStation 2 to read it, as it will be burnt in a DVD-ROM format.
You check the version depending on your PlayStation 2's model number. Use this site to help you verify your version: http://www.mod-chip.com/en/ps2version.htm
jk323- Version 10 is the worst fat PlayStation 2 ever made. That thing has a chip(the LA chip) which controls the laser's focus coils. It delivers 12V instead of 5V and can be dangerous to your laser. Using scratched or crappy media will:
A) Cause damage to the LA chip from overheating.
B) Burn out your laser's coils.
C) Damage the laser's ribbon cable until it knocks out the LA chip and your laser(not too sure about the laser).
Watch it, man, I don't think you want that to happen.

I will report back here if the laser ever fails, currently im using cheapo kyphermedia from office max, gq media which is great quality from fry's as well as compusa media, all cheap media, I cant afford verbatim shits too expensive. But we will see how these 5$ 50 pack media plays. I bought my ps2 used about 2 weeks ago so we will see how long it works, seems like the dvd rom is still the original as well.

Get Taiyo Yuden 8X or 4X. Get DVD-R, or if your burner supports booktyping(there's a list of burner brands with booktyping support on the first page, first post), you can also get DVD+R and booktype to DVD-ROM(improves compatibility).

if u get DVD+R and booktype them to dvd rom. they can be more compatible than DVD-R. the best speed it 4x for 8xdvds. basically half the speed for every dvd.
erm i got some verbs(mcc) and they give me more black screens tha TDK (cmc). when use verbs if u restart the game 4 its give u a black screen/plz insert a ps format . but when using tdk it give u one black screens in every seven time. plus when verbs give me black screen it might repeat it again even when completly turning off the ps2.tdk doesn't do that. vers get u to the browsing screen where u can even switch off/restart the ps2. the only way is to put the mains off. have seen that with tdk.
now i know that mcc is way better than cmc but is this not strange.
and my big concern is that is it tempering with my lasers?? are they ganna die off if i keep using verbs?? sometime i get plz insert a ps disc format message even when palying my original games. does that mean that my lasers are having hard time??

I have been using TY's for awhile now.. i been using DVD-R with no troubles on my v14.. For my next batch of Taiyo Yuden's should i get DVD+R's or stay with DVD-R's? My burner does support booktyping and I have changed the booktype successfully on DVD+R's many times.

Another member(me) has joined the club of members who made a sucessful backup with Taiyo Yuden media.
I had gone to back up my first DVD-ROM game(Sega Rally 2006) at my friend's house, since I don't have a DVD burner, and it has been a success using 8X Sony DVD+Rs with Taiyo Yuden dye and a DVD-ROM booktype on a Lite-On DVD burner. Talk about truly excellent media, nothing went wrong, and the game works flawlessly. Perfect.
