There the same Sony ones from like everywhere. I see them in all these stores.
http://www.canadacomputers.com/index.php...0146&cid=719.88
But according to the link on the FAQ Sony's only manufacturers are Taiyo Yuden, Sony, but the FAQ here itself says it has: SONYD0x, YUDEN, RICOHJPN, MCC IDS, so there might be a chance that these are ricoh, which are second class, all others being 1st class. So has anyone had experience with these DVDs? There pretty common, I'm sure someone can verify, thanks.
Another question I have is, many people on these forums state that you should purchase Sony DVDs that are made in japan, but the FAQ states that both the Japan and Taiwan models are 1st class DVDs. So why do people reccomend going with the Japanese ones? These ones say taiwan, but is that still a problem? Cause I read that some of the sony ones moved up in class, I think I might be looking at older posts about the taiwan copies. Also, does that mean I should make sure these discs are from a certain date? If they moved up in class around a certain time?
and by chance, would someone happen to know the media ID?

Princos with Taiyo dyes... could it actually be possible? When I had burnt WRC Rally Evolved at my cousin's house, he insisted I used one of his 4X Princos if the one I made(on a Maxell High Grade DVD-R) didn't work. I refused until I took a look at the disc. The base was the EXACT SAME COLOR as the Maxell: PURPLE! And my Sony "Made in Japan" DVD+R has that exact same color! Does it actually mean that those Princos have Taiyo dyes, or is it FAKE Taiyo dye?

Hey everyone :)
Yep... a "new to what everyone else has known for years" guy here...
Sorry for the simple post but my mind simply isn't doing too well at grasping the whole branding thing when it's coming to the best media I should be buying. I'm working with a V-9 PS2 console (the only reason I mention it is because I'm curious to know what media has been found to work best for the different "bulky" systems) and have just recently purchased a Lite-On DVD burner. I don't have the model # handy, but it basically handles most major formats, with the exception of DVD-RAM and DVD-R DL.
So far, I've made successful backups of a number of my games using two different test media, and a few different methods using a varying combination of programs, those being : Nero 7, DVD Decryptor, and APACHE 3.
Only problem is my computer is ancient, and it seems my drive can't burn any faster than a rate of 2.4x.(I know...the solution here is "get a new computer", but I mention it for the sake of wondering if it will affect the quality of my burns overall)
The media I've used so far is:
Okay... I'll just admit it. I went with a few cheap Imation 16x DVD-R's (CMC MAG, AE1)I saw when I first picked up the burner, just for the sake of test runs. Needless to say, I quickly abandoned these after further research.
The ones I've had some pretty good success with are some MAXELL 8x DVD-R "Print to Copy" (for inkjet printing on the label side), also CMC MAG.
Now I'm hearing the CMC MAG ID should be avoided altogether, and the only thing I can imagine is because of various experiences over time that people have had, in the wear and tear on your laser, although 99.9% of the discs I've created using these have seemed to have worked with no known problems... as of yet anyway.
Then last night, I came across a few articles and threads about book typing DVD+R's to the DVD-ROM format for better compatibility, found out my Lite-On Drive and the DVD Decryptor I'd already been using should both support it, and went out to find some DVD+R's today.
Now, again, I have to admit, that I went the saving pennies route at first, and found a 10 pack of HP 16x DVD+R's for 4 bucks (these also said CMC MAG but was followed with something along the lines of MC00-01), just for the sake of checking out the whole book typing thing and if in fact my drive was capable of the task. I had success with the actual burning of the disc, and when I checked the DISC INFO, it book typed the burned disc as a DVD-ROM. Success...
However, the game seemed to perform fantastic in comparison to the other discs I was using (in terms of reading and load time, opening cinemas and all; everything just seemed smoother)... until I actually tried to start playing. Then it went into "infini-loop" at the NOW LOADING screen (it was Castlevania: Lament of Innocence). My original is pretty flawless and I take pretty good care of all the games I have, so I was only left to believe that it's either my one or a combination of my system's configuration (being a dinosaur of a computer) or just a matter of cheap media. And not that it is a problem as it was only one test, one disc, and a specific game. I only mention it because I do want to clarify whether or not the book typing thing is something that would be suggested to newcomers in general, and also, given the model Playstation 2 I have.
Well, now that I've gotten used to the software and test runs and such, I think I'm ready to make the move into turning my wallet towards the real deal and have had my eyes set on Verbatim 16x DVD+R's [so that I have the option open to book typing if it's needed] to get started on making the actual backups I want to have as keepers, and have heard a lot of suggestions for this brand.
Do the more experienced feel that this would probably be the best way to go for a starter?

when you use marker pen to write on the DVD it won't write properly it leaves gaps and fades off, and i hate using marker pen on those kinds of surfaces, i use a biro pen instead, it really does work well cause i end up drawing stuff on it lol.

I never heard of a biro pen before, is it safer so to speek and does it work better, and also do you mean this type of marker is safer and better on printables only or all others as well.
