@5iveStar
Just wondering if you had any luck with this prob of yours. I got a similar problem but it doesn't even ask for a volume label, I do get the "Warning: No DPMI-server FPU support" message though.

Anther problem I'm getting is that the Easy Installer skips the last screen of the guide completely. I've got 2 PC's both running XP and it does the exact same thing on both.

The weird thing is a couple of weeks ago I followed the guide using the exact same equipment and it worked perfectly so I don't know what changed. Any help or suggestions would be great.

[EDIT]
Just read Snubbz post about mspformat.exe so I'm gonna try that. Wish me luck!

OK...finally figured this mess out! It's been very confusing and I had to collect tidbits of info from here and there and piece it all together by trial and error pretty much! It's been a nightmare!

I found and downloaded a ms_inst.exe file which is MadLogic's Screen Capture program or some weird thing, and I was like WTF!?! And once I did manage to find the correct msinst.exe (without the underscore( I followed delateur's instructions stating that I should just run msinst msipl.bin in the command prompt without any drive letter and of course again I ran into problems! You DO hafto specify which drive your PSP is in like this: msinst X msipl.bin, where X is your PSP drive letter.

Just thought that might clear things up for those who found it as hard to create a working Magic Memory Stick once the EasyInstaller method fails. "Easy" my buttocks!

And the right msinst.exe can be found here.

I do acknowledge posting the first two entries separately but dunno what happened with that third entry where I'm quoting myself... very strange!

The reason I didn't just edit my previous post was because I went away for an hour or so to try and implement the info I'd found, within which time people could have added further posts unbeknownst to me so when I returned to report my findings I felt it was on a separate occasion, and thus the separate posts, despite the posts not appearing so on the page by being right next to each other.

Normally I edit when or if it were a case of me wanting to add more to what I'd already said or correcting grammar or clearing any ambiguity etc, and usually happens in one sitting.

This is my thinking and I think it's logical but if you want me to edit instead of post when facing similar situations in future I'll do that. Whatever complies with forum rules/etiquette is fine by me.

Yes - please edit your post instead (unless of course someone has posted after you).
The back to back posting is considered post padding and not allowed.

It's when asked and answered several times but yes you can now re-format the memory stick.

Not really following what your point is but no one said re-formating the memory stick is in the guide.
Not everyone does reformat - some just save the magic memory stick to use it later for say another psp, unbricking whatever.

I've finally managed to downgrade my slim from OFW3.95 to 3.90m33, but now have another problem!

I can't run any CSO or ISO games from the memory stick! How can this be overcome?

I know with my Phat as soon as custom FW is installed with 1.50 addon everything works perfect. So how can I do the same on 3.90m33 Slim without 1.50 addon?

[EDIT]
I just hit reply again instead of edit and remembered! hehe...

Anyway, silly me has figured it out! I didn't have a UMD in the drive or set the driver to No UMD.

So never mind my questions.

Great Forum here, I always learn alot from AfterDawn and all those who share thier info here.
Just wanted to share one of my findings in case it might help others.
I tried this tuttorial several times before I finally switched to a real sony memory stick pro duo and it worked.
I was using sandisk memory stick pro duo before that and it would not boot. The psp would just sit there with the green light on and the screen wouldnt come on. The battery was being turned into a pandora battery correctly but my memory card wasnt working or booting. So if you are having trouble with symtoms like I had, try sony memory stick pro duo instead of other brand name mem card.
I just changed a TA082(once apon a time not hackable) psp into 3.90 m33-2. I have been waiting a year or more to get this done since I bought it new. had an older psp with 1.5 to play around with since then and it is now a 3.90 m33 also. I dont play video games often, I just love the challenge of learning how to customise these systems.
Keep up the good work guys, you rock.

had to edit- just got my sandisk memcard to work also, I must have missed something the other times.

One dreamed of becoming,
Another stayed awake and became.

I've heard that Genuine Sony Pro Duos AND SanDisk will work so give it a try before you bail out. As they say, no harm in trying! If using larrylje's EasyInstaller gives you trouble, btw you MUST see the last screen in the "Making a Magic Memory Stick" section of his guide for it to work otherwise, follow this guide.

Ok, so I've read through a lot of this thread and other threads and have a couple of questions.

At the beginning of the thread it says this can be done on a slim psp. Other threads I've read said you need a fat psp to hack a slim one. I just got a slim psp and have OFW 3.95 on it. Can I follow this guide to get custom firmware on it without needing anything else?

If I do get custom firmware on it, can I still play my original UMDs and things I've downloaded from the playstation store? I think it's cool to be able to have custom firmware, but I don't want it to prevent me from doing other things on my psp.

Thanks in advance.

AFAIK the only reason you would need a Phat would be to softmod a Pandora Battery. If you've got one already or a Datel Tool battery then you don't need the Phat.

The PSP will work as per normal the only difference being you have all the additiional features that custom firmware offers.

Thanks obikenobi.
I've read a lot through this thread of people that have been successful and people that have had problems. I think I'll give it a shot and see what happens.
