i've got a psp slim with official 3.95 fw.
I've followed the install instructions 5 times and every time the easy installer doesn't leave any files on the memory stick (after selecting option 4). ie. blank in windows explorer and when copying the contents of the 'addon' folder, there is nothing to overwrite.
Am I missing something?
Im using a 4gb sony gaming stick (100% genuine), I've also got a datel slim battery tool.
Please could someone advise!!??
Use a smaller Memory Stick 512MB to 1GB.
Thanks for the quick reply. I tried another way - running the install direct from the winrar file & it worked!! Hopefully i'll crack the next stage!!

question: once CFM is implemented, can the magic memory stick be used as a regular memory stick to save? Or does it need to be format first?
Or do you just need to delete the files on it?

ok, so i've borrowed another psp. well if i try to run the easy installer through formatting the memory stick through the psp as advised, it again misses steps and just doesn't install properly as was the case initially. if i format with mspformat then run the easy installer like i did last time this time i get error messages towards the end of the installation, which did not happen last time, but thus is no good. so i looked into the link you've provided for manually making a magic memory stick, but this says that it only recommends memory sticks below 1gb, is it totally useless trying with my 4gb card?

ok this time the easy installer actually got successfully through to thee end having just formatted the stick through the psp - this time when i try to install the firmware, it seems to install far more stuff than before, goes through lines & lines of stuff, but then ultimately ends in another NAND decode error

Originally posted by delateur: Hey all, I just got my custom firmware installed, and I wanted to let you know what I did to get it working, just in case going through this guide verbatim isn't cutting it (as it didn't for me).
First off, the part that didn't work for me is similar to what others have stated, which is that it copies the files, but then goes straight to the credits. For those who don't know, this means it did NOT install the custom bootloader properly (in other words, your memstick will not boot and you'll be staring at a blank screen). No amount of swapping of battery or memory stick is going to fix this, if that's the problem you're having.
So now you're probably wondering how to fix it, right? Well, I can help you there, also. The good news is the download you got does contain most of what you need. The only problem you're having is getting the memory stick formatted properly, which will then allow it to accept the custom bootloader, which will install 3.71 M33, and then allow you to do the other upgrades. I could not find a solid consensus on how this should be done, but I'll tell you what I did. I should let you know now, I was using WinXP SP2, and no matter what method of formatting I tried, I could not get the bootloader to work. The only method of formatting that did work for me was using mspformat.exe, which I believe was designed specifically to format a memory stick properly to accept a modified bootloader. So, go ahead and find that program (Google is your friend!), as well as another program called msinst.exe (the bootloader installation executable), and we'll get started.
So here's what you do:
1) Format your memory stick using mspformat.exe
2) Extract all the files from uniunbr.rar to your memory stick, and also copy the ADD_ON contents to the memory stick - these are all the files you will need to install your custom firmware.
3) Copy msinst.exe and msipl.bin (located on the memory stick in the root directory) to an easy location (c:/ would work, for instance)
4) Up to this point, I'm assuming you have the PSP connected to the PC in USB mode, so go ahead and quit out of that mode, or unplug the USB cable.
5) Open a command window and get to the directory those two files are located and type: "msinst msipl.bin" (no quotes, just as I typed it, and don't get confused and think you need to put a drive letter in there, you don't!) and hit Enter
6) It will now wait for you to reconnect your PSP (Saying "Connect target MsProDuo" on the very last line), so go ahead and put it back into USB mode or reconnect the USB cable.
7) The expected text will be displayed (that was skipped on your installation before), so hit Y and the memory stick will be set up as a Pandora memory stick (meaning it will boot when you put a Pandora battery in).
8) Now you can follow the rest of the guide as stated, hitting X to install the custom firmware at the menu that shows up, etc.
Note: This method SHOULD work with any version of Windows, because of the use of the custom formatting tool, and because the custom installer is not used.
Hope that helps anyone else keep from going through the frustration I did trying to figure out what was going wrong.
Edit: Wording changes for clarity
Thanks delateur used this and it worked like a charm. Now have 3.90 M33-3. =)

Im on the worst creation known to man, Vista
i just done it all on my windows xp pc and it still doesnt work, it turns on itself when i put the battery in and i press X and leave it for ages but still nothin
Then try using a different memory Stick.
There is nothing wrong with the guide so you need to try other options like XP instead of Vista and different Memory Sticks etc. etc.
Try placing the magic memory Stick in first then the Battery and vice-versa Place the Battery in first then the Magic memory Stick.
How could using vista have an effect on the installation. I installed it perfectly but it doesnt run, when I put the battery. The psp doesnt even read the memorystick.

I think using MSPformat then the easy installer might have messed up the MMS. You should have the Memory Stick formated via PSP before starting the easy installer.
Do you have a Card Reader that supports ProDuo memory sticks or a second PSP that you can connect to via USB?
Ok I tried using msformat.exe but the it just comes up in a blink then shuts down automatically
