1)how do i hook the hd to the ps2

You will need a hd, (you have this), a newer network adapter (to power the hd) and a copy of HDAdvance 2/HDLoader. (On the way ...) You will have to unscrew the screws on the back of the network adapter, and hook the HD to the adapter. It should be set to MASTER on the HD. Afterward, put HD into older PS2 (not slimmy) and fire it up. You should also put the copy of HDA into the PS2 and it will automatically format the HD. The only bad thing is ... you can d/l SOCOM maps AND you can't download saves to your HD, unless it's a Sony.

2)do i need to put the originals on my computer first and then transfer to the ps2

No. You have to put the HDA disc into the PS2's tray and it will have a list of different commands on your right. You have to hit 'convert' to convert games. Then, it will ask what you want to call it and it should start. Be forewarned - there is a glitch of some type that affects the disc sometimes ... telling you there's not enough room to convert. I got that message and I had only ripped 1 GAME! I had 272gb of space left! And ... be careful on ripping DVD-Dual 9 games. They WILL NOT WORK.

3)what do i need that i dont have already?

Your copy of HDAdvance. Hope all this helps.

Hey will this hard drive work with a ps2 version 4 and hd advance....it's not posted on the hdadvance compatibility website, but it's cheaper than the Maxtor DiamondMax 9 6Y200P0. I'll post both for easy comparison.

Maxtor DiamondMax 10 6B200P0

Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 6Y200P0

Thanks!!!

swkiller,

I know that you will never get all of the advertised space of a HD. For me, I am missing 21gb, but that's cool. I know on my old 40gb Sony, you could only see like 37gb. I would recommend reformatting the HD and then see how much you get. Unless you have games on it already ...

For mod155,

You can still save to your memory card. A cool feature of the official Sony HDD is the ability to copy game saves to the HDD. In the browser menu, you can see the official Sony HDD and it only shows like 37gb as well. However, the PS2 will ONLY show the official HDD in the browser window. If you install any other HD, it will not be seen, from my research, but I am not perfect and could be wrong. I am sure there are some mods out there that will get the PS2 to be tricked and recognize the HD, but I don't know of them.

Hope this helps both of you.

From what I know and have found on the Web and through personal experience, you can use your PC to rip the games to your HD, with proggiez like PS Handiness and WinHIIP. You do need a DVD drive to do this. I have a Teac 4x DVD Burner. If you have never done it before, after you hook up the HD to your PC, you will have to make your HD 'master' when you reconnect it to the online adapter. No, you don't need an Internet connection ... the adapter powers your HD. All of my knowledge is based on using HD Advance 2.0, btw.

Hope that helps.

Yes, the network work adapter powers your HD, and that's how HD Advance or HD Loader sees the drive. Honestly, there is very little difference, IMHO, between the HD Loader and HD Advance proggiez. Both of them do the same thing, and both look the same.

Seriously, HD Advance 2.0 'recommends' a HD at least 40gb and up to 200gb. However, I took a gamble and it works on my Seagate 300gb. I am sure you could use a smaller one, but I wouldn't go less than 10gb. I have yet to try it ... I have several spare 4gb, and I may try out Freedom Fighters or Namco Museum (both are 1gb or less) and see if they work. My rule of thumb - get the most space you can afford. I would have loved to try at 500gb one ... maybe even a TB. That would be sick. And if it's incompatible, you can always resell it or toss it into your PC or Mac.

BTW, HD Advance 2.0 or 1.0 DON"T SUPPORT Dual 9 or Dual 5 games (I believe GT4 is Dual 5). The only way to rip them to your PS2 HD is by hooking it up to a PC and ripping the games via WinHIIP or PSHandiness. The benefits are obvious - you can rip the game in less than 10 minutes ... you can rip MOST dual layer games and you can hack 'unplayable' games (like Battlefront), manipulate some filez and rip them to your HD. You can't do that with HD Advance. However, HD Advance will see the games and they are playable. One thing ... after you hook it up to a PC, you will have to select 'MASTER' or 'CABLE SELECT' on the back of the HD before you hook it back up, or the PS2 WILL NOT SEE THE HD.

A Hard drive showing 276GB if it's 300GB or a 40GB showing 37GB is perfectly normal, a certain percentage of the hard drive is used for the file system. For Example, on my laptop I have 2 internal 60GB hard drives, both read as 55.8GB, another example is my 250GB hard drive which shows 232GB. It's perfectly normal, don't say you're getting gipped out of space or whatever because you're not, if files were just put on a hard drive without a file system, it would enable you to use all the space but the computer (or in this case PS2) would not be able to read any of the data, to us it would be like if someone took a perfectly normal novel and scrambled all the letters up, could you read it?

If that's the case, why isn't a HD advertised for the exact amount of space available? It's rounding up, big time. Anyhow ... this thread is about HD Loader and HD Advance, not Hard Drives 101.

Yeah. You may have to re-eject the HD Advance disk, but yeah ... most work. I have a Gameshark and I am gonna get the Action Replay thing. Only 1 game has hung up on me ... and that was Ace Combat 5. When you use Gameshark, and you enable the cheats, it asks you if you wanna start with cheats on. Then, after hitting yes, you are asked to insert the disc. Put in your HD Advance disk and it should load. If not, eject the disk ... reinsert it and hit start again. It should load.

Alright, I just got this whole rig yesterday, hooked it up, it boots up and everything, but when I start ripping games, it notices every small scratch on the disk and refuses to rip it at a certain point. It's not that bad of a scratch because I can play the original just fine, and I ripped it on the computer with DVD Decrypter and there are no read errors at all. Any suggestions?

My problem is that I can't rip ANYTHING, I imagine that the only thing i can rip is a game straight out of the store and that's it, but it doesn't seem to be an issue for anyone else.

I hear you ... if you own the games, then just rent them and rip. However, that opens another set of legal obstacles, seeming we don't actually 'own' your video games - you are really leasing the games ... that is, having a license to use them ... until the license owner revokes the privilege.

Anyhow ... I would recommend doing one of two things. The first is ... if your PS2 is having issues with the games, use your PC. Download WinHIIP or PS2Handiness on your PC, hook up your HD to the PC and rip them. You do need a DVD Drive ... but it takes a few minutes versus 30 minutes.

The easier method is just recleaning the games and the DVD optical device in the PS2. Using a cleaner disc should work. If you have a history of disk read errors, though, I would recommend using the PC method.

Honestly, this program rocks. I have used both methods and they are cool as a fan. If you have any questions, holla!
