Hello, I am about ready to try HD Advance with a Maxtor 200GB drive and the Sony network adapter. I have read and searched and found out the process for the most part.
I have one additional question before I start the "install" please....
Do you have to install the networking stuff as if you were going to use the networking adapter for network access OR do you just ignore that part and use the adapter to connect the hard drive?
Thanks
Alan

The networking part is unnecessary. The only role the network adapter plays is to power the HD.

Hello, I JUST DID IT, so although I am new, I got it to work just as described.
First, I don't know which is better HD LOADER or HD ADVANCE however I went with HD Advance as it from some articles is newer and was featured on one of the TV tech shows.
With HD Advance, I got the 2.0 version to handle the larger hard drives (officially up to 200GB but others have gone higher). As far as the install, it was really that simple, no kidding!!
ALL you need is the software (HD Advance), the SONY network adapter, and a hard drive, that's it. NOTE: you do NOT need to install ANY of the Network Adapter software/stuff. NOTE: you do need to make sure the hard drive will FIT physically. ALL you have to do is; 1. connect hard drive to adapter, 2. plug adapter in PS2, 3. Boot PS2 from the HD Advance disk. If all goes well (and it did in my case) HD Advance will see the disk and asked me to format it. I said YES, and it took a few minutes. THAT'S IT!! Start using it!
There are MODES you can set if a game doesn't work. But there will still be games that just don't work. The best list so far I have found is at http://www.ps2nfo.com/ps2hdd.html
The only part I haven't figured out yet is there are references to PATCHING so that some games will work. I have yet to figure out how to do this......

You can't(easily) patch with hd advance.hdloader newest .elf contains just about every patch ever. This is good if you want to backup games like god of war or gt4.

Yeah, but I would rather not worry about my memory card getting corrupt and junk. Do some research ... about memory card exploits ... most of what you see ain't too good. So what I can't play God of War just yet off my HD. It's only a couple more games that the memory card exploit works with. I have considered it but ... it's not worth the risk of doing something the memory card was never, ever designed to do.

The only time i ever had a problem with my memory card wasn't because of an exploit it was because of a corrupt game save. My damn power cut out in the middle of a save, and i was left with a gamesave that i couldn't erase through the PS2 browser.
So i backed up all my good saves to my HDD, and fired up my memory card exploit. Then launched my memorycard reformat elf, and reformated my memory card. Works as good as new. :) If it wasn't for my exploit i would have had a crippled memory card.
I think the exploit is really the way to go. I've noticed that more and more, newer games just aren't working with the stock HDL/HDA. And i don't see that trend changing.
The exploit does a lot of things that the disks don't. New compatibilty modes, Full DVD9 support without flattening the image, date/time fixes, network support, etc.
Just my 2 cents. :)

Someone PLEASE explain the PATCH PROCESS. I keep hearing about pathing hd loader and hd advance (which I have) but NO WHERE is there any information on it. There are also references to ELF but I can not find anything on what that is.
So, I have HD Advance 2.0. Where do you get the patches people are talking about to fix it so more games can play off of the hard drive and how do you do it?
Thanks so much

Here's where you can get an awsome tool to make your own exploit http://ausdigital.net/ . It doesn't get easier then that. You should be able to find out everything you need to know there, and if you can't, ask.

Ok, i have been reading forums all over the net. I have a mc exploited ps2 with the network adapter and misc elf files installed. The problem i'm getting is that whenever i put a HD (any HD) into my ps2(v3) it sasy that it needs formatting. I can take the same Hd, put it in a newer machine, format it, play games on it and it works fine. I put it back in my machine and it says it needs formatting again. So i know its not the HD that bad. I have run out of ideah's about what to do. I used a friends newer machine to do these tests. I'ves used HDadvance,dms-hdd-format, winhiip. None of these seem to make a change.
I need some help here.

Maybe BUYING a legit copy of HD Advance would help you out.

who said anything about a legit/non-legit game?
I never said anything about copying games...
The whole reason i'm trying to put a HD in it is because my laser is dying and won't read my discs. So, either i mod it, or throw my games away.
anyways, back to the problem at hand...

Hi..
Just heard about all this stuff, sounds cool..I wanna get it,just not sure what kind of hard drive to get(I understand Maxtor is good)and what size?
How many games roughly can fit on a 40gb HD?? Is it worth it,or am I better off with a bigger one?
Any help would be great..

hi, ok i just found out about this "hd loader and hd advance" stuff. i read some of this forum. just have a few quick questions. #1.can you copy burned DVD-R ps2 backups to hd loader or hd advance hard drive?
#2. can you use the new hard drive to store game saves, to eliminate the stupid small memory card?
#3. can you also put roms(snes, sega, nes)and emulators on the hard drive and play them?
#4 i have swap magic 3.6, can it be used in conjuntion with hd loader in some way?
#5is it possible to ftp to the ps2 using the network adapter, or dose the new hard drive somehow hook into it so you can't?
#6. if you could ftp to it, then you would be able to put the burned game into the computer hard drive as a iso and then ftp it to the ps2 hd loader hard drive and that would eliminate the "check" that the ps2 does on the game to see if it is real... right?
