DVD-R's are always better to use with PS2's. That's straight from the mod pros at teammodders.com. The DVD-R's of any of those brands should be fine.

Who said R- are better ?? I've burned about 30 PS2 games on DVD+R w/zero coasters, and over 100 movies w/about 1 bad (the 1 bad was caused by the decrypter I used), and I used RITEK OEM, everything looks good
Could it be the places your buying your media ??
just food for thought
I know someone will say something else is better and it might be for them, but for me this set up works perfect, if you could find good cheap media blanks that work for you then don't worry about brand name

Thanks eramir

That's straight from Dave at teammodders.com, my mod guy. I've read the same thing in countless posts. The newer PS2's have better compatibility with DVD+R's and the older ones have almost none. Chances are your PS2 is a v9 or later. Ritek is good media, I'm not surprised you have had success with it. Stick with it, if it works for ya. Cheap media uses crap dyes which wear down your PS2 laser much quicker than good media. Avoid crap like Staples, Imation, or Memorex DVD-R's. Yes booktyping would make a big difference. It would allow the DVD+R's to be read as a pressed (original) DVD-ROM and provide greater compatibility with stand alone DVD players and your PS2. In DVD Decrypter click on the book deal in the bottom right hand corner and select your burner and the type of media you wish to booktype. Then burn as normal. That's it. Good luck.

According to my understanding, any PS2 from version 4 - current can read/play both DVD+R and DVD-R. On the other, book typing any DVD+R into DVD-ROM (yes.... it's the "universal" format) is one of the best and safest way to go. That's why I prefer genuine DVD+R Taiyo Yuden and Maxell (made in japan) media only, then book typing them into DVD-ROM = means no worries.

No. Use Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, Ritek, Sony, Maxell, TDK, or Phillips DVD-R's. Never use DvD+R's with your PS2.

Ok I'm sorry. I just can't sit quietly here. I have always used the cheapest disk (media) I could get. I have a nice burner and maybe an inferior burner requires superior media. I have been ripping disks since I modded my ps1 in 96. and have always used the cheapest disks I could find. I've never had a problem with my chosen media. That's just my experience. I mean xbox, ps2, and ps1.

It's true that my cheap disks fall apart easily. But the game always sticks. Expensive media is usually more durable and it may be worth it to spend the extra cash but as long as I keep the disk in the machine or in the case, I don't have such problems.

I am going to get someones swap magic 3.6, but they have a slide tool for it, and i am going to use the straw method, i just used the straw method to see if the disk spins while the top is open, it does so i am not worried about the tools, but i would like to know is there a specific disk for PStwo and PS2?
Or is Swap Magic 3.6 cd and dvd the same for both consoles, but its only the tool that makes a difference.

Swap Magics are the same discs for all bios versions of the PS2.

That's what I've been saying, zyw. What matters most is not the particular media, but how your *burner* reacts with that media. Your PS2 doesn't care whether it's getting a so-called "crappy" CMC Magnetics disc or a Taiyo Yuden disc -- it only cares whether the *burn* is any good, and that's measured in terms of errors (PIEs and PIFs, and even POFs), which determines the resulting readability. Guess what? If your burner is making crappy burns with Taiyos but fantastic burns with Memorexes -- which one do you think will read better in your PS2? (And yes, crappy burns with Taiyo Yudens do happen to people.)

For the record, I've made bona fide great burns, tested and all, with the 25 Memorexes DVD+Rs I bought. Does my PS2 care, just because some other people have had bad experiences with them? Not at all -- the readability of my burns are proven to be great: low PIEs and PIFs across the board. Conversely, my new batch of Ridata R04s 16x's has given me more problems than any other media before (I can only make decent burns at 8x) -- this despite coming from a presumably reputable brand. I have, however, had fine results with Ritek's R03s, G05s, and RICOHJPNR01s.

What this means is that so-called "DVD quality" is an inexact science at best, particularly when there is so much variance among burners and even among the same brands (due to different media codes and dye). Even the exact same burners will react differently to the same media given different firmware due to the tweaked write strategies. This is why I like to say it's jumping the gun to dismiss stuff as "utter crap" when it may very well work just fine for someone else. That said, it's probably a good idea to avoid the "4th class media" indicated on the top page :P But if you have a well-rated burner (which means it likely works well with a variety of media), don't feel compelled to buy the absolute most expensive discs.

As for DVD-Rs and DVD+Rs -- I don't really see how anyone can test the "preference" of PS2 lasers for one format or another unless they do distinct data transfer tests for a wide variety of brands of -R and +Rs for each and every version and laser model (Sanyo or otherwise) of the PS2. As far as I know, no one has ever done this :P so matters remain inconclusive.

My own personal instinct is that the difference is completely negligible, just like the difference all modern dual-format drives exhibit towards either format. My own personal experience is that the slimline v12, which is the version I own, doesn't show a preference to either format, since I've tried (a lot of) both. DVD burners do sometimes exhibit a small preference to a certain format (for instance, in tests, the NEC 3540a seems to show slightly better results with +Rs), and conceivably this could influence which format reads better in your PS2... but even then, the difference is just that: very small. A good rule of thumb seems to be: v1-6, DVD-R, v7+, either will work fine.

Believe it or not, the PS2 laser actually seems to be extremely lenient when it comes to bad burns; I've made a couple of horrific burns (just awful PIE and PIF errors, one with outright flaws in the surface scan), and yet the only thing I had to show for it was slightly longer, slighty louder loading times between stages on one, and some hiccupping in the intro music for the other. The actual gameplay for both was entirely smooth. (I reburned both anyway to save my PS2 laser a workout.) Part of the reason is that the PS2 laser does not read especially fast (it's only 4x), and the other part's the fact that the PS2 error correcting is actually fairly decent. So if any of burns are failing entirely or skipping madly, you can take that as a sign of something being seriously wrong.

teh noob i've been saying that since the beginning. cmc mag sucks cuz of the horrible PIF and PIF spikes. taiyo yuden for me have as little as 2pif and total 30-60. with cmc it's been max pif 30-80 and total pif 3000-10000 cuz of the media quality. check facts before ranting

Thanks Liquidus. Crap Media uses cheap dye which wears down your PS2 laser. You might get by with it, but it's not advisable.

So Liquidus you haven't had any issues with the shiny back TY's not working with your PS2? Do you recommend the 4x (TYGO1) over the 8x(TYG02) TY's? I just wanted to be sure before I place my order.

Well that doesn't jive with my results, I've got over 100 successful PS2 backups to DVD+R media using an old school v1 PS2 purchased on day of release. Have used nothing but Ritek/RiData media on a MadDog Multimedia MegaStor 6-in-1 (NEC-2510A)

Well good for you. I didn't say it was true every time. That's what a pro modder says, so I'll go with him on that. Most mod sites won't touch v.1-3 PS2's. Are you sure you have a v.1?
23. Q. What version is my PS2?
A. http://mod-chip.com/index-cart-us.php?go=en/select_ps2_main.htm
It's always better to use DVD-R's with the PS2. There are few universal rules which apply to ALL PS2's. What works for you most likely wouldn't work for most people. Logically it doesn't make sense, but it doesn't have to. If DVD+R's work great for your v.1, great keep using them. Early PS2's don't read DVD+R's well at all. This is the exception not the rule.

i don't recommend them over tyg02 normally but i do now cuz they're $13 cheaper.

tyg02 good at 8x with very low PIF
tyg01 good at 4x with very low PIF

there's no diff just speed
