Lol Alkohol. It doesn't matter how many times we say it, post it, or SAY IT IN CAPS, noobs will for all eternity use crap media and be stunned when their games don't work. Since I switched it to Taiyo Yuden, my backups are 52/52. Not a skip, lag, or failure to boot. You are correct and I applaud your effort, I just believe that it's futile. Fight the good fight though.

@Tokijin
You may be right about that, it's totally futile = useless, but I'm just so tired of newbies asking tons of questions about media (regardless if it's in the PS2 forum, DVD media forum or DVD-R/+R forum). The fact is that, most of them are using CMC MAG or cheap store brands and after they're done backing up with their PS2 games or DVD movies, it will freeze or pixelate after a few days or weeks. Then another noob questions again, know what I mean.
I don't really care what media they're going after, that's their choices, it's their call, their money. I'm just here to give and help out those that are willing to listen and learn that's all. In the end, it's their lost and I could careless.
Hence, here's a thread http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/265933 somebody claims that burning at 16X is better than burning at 4X, and or burning at 16X will produces the same quality in results as burning at 4X. MaxBurn and I gave them all the evidences and proof from burning at 4X and 8X, and but what do you see? Nothing... nada from them, not even a single valid proof to show on the thread. I rest my case that easy -- no further comment and or debate, hehehe.
Anyways, I'm out... now you take care of them newbies.

Lol. Yeah I just tested my Nero CD/DVD Speed on a Taiyo Yuden TYG02 copy of Mercenaries burned at 4x- 11 P.I. Errors, 99 quality score. I tested one of my early copies of DQVIII on Maxell CMC Mag AE1- 878 P.I. Errors, 13 Quality Score. Thats f***ing amazing. I knew CMC Mag was bad, but that bad? Incredible. Keep up the good work.

Yeah I like helping people, but sometimes the "How do I burn PS2 games?", and "Is the media I use important?" questions" get tiresome. I find myself subscribing to fewer thread these days. I read half of that thread or so. It's funny. People are free to have their opinion on things, but when they claim something to be true that is clearly not, it's hard to hold back. I try not to demean anyone, though on my bad days I'm sure I have. Oh well, nobody knows everything and everyone was a noob at sometime, but burning PS2 games at 16x, that's just ludicrous. Ah well, too each his own. Kudos to you Alky, you are a lot more patient man than I.

I agree, it does get tiresome. I used Memorex cuz they were on sale then I found out how bad it is for the laser, so I ditched 'em. I'll probably have to buy a new laser for my V7 later on, but its no big deal compared to the repairs I need for my V4, I'm saving up for that later though.

That's cool Ofnir, your getting your version 7 modded with a DMS 4 Pro. Welcome to the modclub, you won't regret it. I originally wanted my PS2 to be modded with a DMS 4 Pro, but my v.4 motherboard was extremely picky, so I ended up with a Matrix Infinity. It's awesome. The DMS 4 Pro has an HD Advance program built into the flash. You'll need to flash it with the latest Toxic OS, or you could just have the modders do it. Congrats, no more slide card or disc swapping for you. You'll NEVER go back to owning an unmodded system again. After a couple days, you'll know what I mean. Enjoy. If DavBere does your mod, you have nothing to worry about, he's the best. Either way teammodders will do an excellent job. I've gotten to know several people from their site, and they're all good people.

I believe the green Fuji's are Taiyo Yuden's. I'd just order them off http://www.supermediastore.com They have some great deals on legit TY's. I got a 100 pack of TYG02's for $41 including shipping. They have all burned perfectly. I'm well into the second cake box.

I went to Best Buy today but their entire Sony and Fuji 8X stock was "Made in Taiwan". Any tips on where I can find the TY's (Made in Japan) or should I just try Verbatim or something? I know I can order TYs online but I'd prefer not waiting a week for a package in the mail. The Taiwan Sony DVD-Rs are on sale really cheap, any chance they'd still work decent?

Yeah I can't wait 'till my PS2 comes back! I was reading some of the features for ToxicOS and I'm already getting everything I need for it :). I think I should get it back by Thursday, maybe Friday. Here I've only imagined just putting a backup in and it just boots, no swapping whatsoever, and now I can finally do that and much more.

Should I be able to find these IDs on the outside of the DVD-R packages? When I was at Best Buy I could find the "Made in Taiwan" but I never saw any small print that said anything like TYG0x or SONY0xD.

I'm afraid that's not a YUDEN media -- chances are, if it's "Made In Taiwan", then it is NOT Taiyo Yuden. Genuine Taiyo Yuden is only "Made In Japan", so if you're shopping from your local Best Buy, then it's best to check out the SONY & FUJI 8X DVD+R (Made In Japan) -- that's authentic TAIYO YUDEN media right there.

Well I have another post like 3 posts up on this page where I said I just went to Best Buy and their entire stock of both Sony and Fuji was "Made in Taiwan" so I don't know how people are finding the Japanese ones at Best Buy.
Sooo I still need answers to my original questions: 1) since I can't find the JAP Sony/Fuji, should I just try TDK or something, and 2) are these media IDs visible on the packaging anywhere.

1. No- order it from http://www.supermediastore.com
2. No, you have to insert your disc in your DVD-ROM drive and check it with DVD Decrypter or DVD Identifier. I believe both your questions had already been answered.

Thanks for this great thread guys, its made my decision on what to use a hellavua lot easier.
One question though, I'm getting a bunch of Taiyo Yuden's from the Supermedia store for PS2 backups and saw a review about some of the printable labels having rough edges. I dont 'know what that means exactly but which types do you recommend: Inkjet Printable, Shiny Silver tops?
I know this may seem trivial but i just want to be on the safe side and ask experts.

Well I'd go with the Shiny Silver Taiyo Yuden DVD-R's in the Cake Box. I've burned 60-70 PS2 games with them so far, and they all play perfectly. These are what I ordered: http://www.supermediastore.com/taiyo-yuden-silver-thermal-8x-dvd-... Can't go wrong with TY's. I swear by them at this point. Nothing less will ever grace the inside of my PS2. In fact I think I might get more for Xmas. The 4x TY's are on sale for $27.99 as well. I prefer the ability to burn at 4x myself, so I went with the 8x. Either one will work great.

Now that you're getting some genuine Taiyo Yuden media, that's good. However, number 1 rule is DON'T burn over 4X, especially for PS2 games. Number 2 rule is to always make sure your DVD burner is on top of firmware, so make sure your burner's firmware is the most current one.
Firmware is like a brain, it will check/diagnose the blank media for writing strategy, it will verify the media and code in prior to the actual burning process. So make sure it's on top and alive. Go here http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_all.php and get the latest firmware available for your dvd burner if yours is not up-to-date yet.
Good luck and happy burning!!!!
