just stumbled on this thread; good to see Memorex/CMC Mag/Imation etc are indeed having the same impact in PS2 gaming as they do in DVD Movie burning :)

@nwostarz -
Datawrite use varying quality in disc manufacturers; here's an example of what companies such as Memorex/Imation/TDK do with discs - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/232406, Datawrite are the same difference, ie you gotta know exactly which Datawrites you buy each time

Hi! Well, as a Newbie... I'll reply to this thread ... and bump it at the same time for you.
Thank YOU for posting the list of most reliable media. I have only bought DVD blanks for recording photos and data on my Dell laptop. Now I am buying a DVD/VHS combo unit... both of which are recorders. I wonder now how many of the trashed DVD's from my Dell were due to bad media.
Thanks again. Now I will go and post my question about the DVD recorder I am about to purchase on Ebay. I found only ONE post about it. No reviews... nothing. BTW, I've enjoyed poking around in your forum for a long time. You guys rock.
Have a great week...
Angie P.S. Too bad I have about 75 blanks to use up first.

@Ofnir, when are you getting your modded PS2 back? I had a lot of trouble sleeping when mine was on it's way.
@embmesngr I'd get rid of the crap blanks and pick up some good media. You get some Great deals on Taiyo Yuden, High Grade Hitachi Maxell's, or Verbatims at http://www.supermediastore.com

Depends which version PS2 you have. v.5 and later should play DVD+R's fine, v. 1-3 not so much, v.4's are 50/50. I happen to have a v.4 that plays DVD+R's fine, at least DL ones. I'd go with DVD-R's if your not sure.
29. Q. I have a version X playstation. Should I use DVD-R's, DVD+R's, DVD-RW's, or DVD+RW's?
A. Well the PS2 doesn't load RW's well, if at all, so those are out. v.1-4 PS2's seem to work with better with DVD-R's. v.5-8 is 50/50, still probably better with DVD-R's. v.9 and later seem to prefer DVD+R's. If you know of an exception to this, i.e. you have a v. 9 which wont play+R's, or a v.2 which prefers DVD+R's, don't send me hate mail, it's just a rule of thumb. In general it's usually better to use DVD-R's when burning PS2 games.
23. Q. What version is my PS2?

@Tokijin
There was a bit of a mix up with the order, but it is on its way back. I thought I was gonna get it back today, but I guess the mail is goin' slow due to the holiday season and internet gifts and all that. Hopefully I can get it back before Saturday, my days feel blank without the PS2 lol.

Yeah basically until school starts back up, I'll be playing PS2 games and hanging out on AD. Hope you get it back soon. You'll love it when you do. I think I need to go out tomorrow, so I don't forget what the fairer sex looks like lol. My collection of PS2 backups is up to 95 games. You definitely won't miss the disc swapping, and the DMS 4 Pro has a HD Loader program built right into the flash, thanks to Team Toxic. So you can hook up your HD and not miss a beat.

Lol same here man. I cant remember how many I have, I don't think its near 95 though lol. I'm about ready to stick a fan near the back of my old PS2 so it won't overheat so I can play some games hehe. That or learn how to RE and some C++ so I can have a field day with the PS3 when it comes out lol.

It depends. I've been told that some Wal-Mart's carry Verbatim DVD+R's. I picked up some Maxell DVD-R's at Wal-Mart that had the Ritek G05 media code. It's usually a crap shoot if you pick up media at a chain store. Since most big manufacturer's outsource their media to several different factories, there's no telling what the media ID is going to be from the package itself. You could luck and get some Ritek G05's, decent media, or you could end up with CMC Mag media, which is garbage. Order some Taiyo Yuden's or Verbatim's off http://www.supermediastore.com They're top notch media which will serve you well. Taiyo Yuden is a notch above Verbatim, in a league all it's own. That's my opinion anyway.

Check the first page of this thread. To check the media code, Open DVD Decrypter, insert your disc, and check what it says under Media ID or Manufacturer ID. Check it against the link on the first page of this thread.

Those TYG02's look like the same ones I use. Make sure that site is reputable before ordering, there are a lot of fake Taiyo Yuden's out there. I couldn't speak to the difference in dye quality between the TYG02 (8x Taiyo Yuden) and the TYG03 (16x Taiyo Yuden), but in general it's better to go with 8x DVD-R's, they just tend to last longer with better burn quality. Besides it's generally not a good idea to burn PS2 games above 4x. Some people burn them faster with good results, but I'm quite happy with burning at 4x on TYG02. My Nero CD/DVD Speed quality scores are always 95 or better with that method. But hey, to each his own.

hi all,
ive got a ps2 slimline with infinity 1.39 (possibly a fake but im not sure at the moment).
I burned some games with decrypter at the right speed, using tdk and sony disks. But when i try to run them it always shows the red 'insert disk' screen... i even tried putting in swap magic (the copied cd's work) and THEN tried running the games...still no luck.
What could the problem be?? does the booktype actually make any difference? (using a liteon dvd burner).
I was trying to copy both actual games and copied (mass produced backups).

Probably go with the DVD+R TY's for the v.14 PS2. It shouldn't matter much, but they are a little better quality than DVD-R's. Booktype the DVD+R's if you get them. Yes booktyping can make a big difference as far as improving the compatiblity of DVD+R's with your PS2.
53. Q. What is Booktyping?
A. Booktyping is the ability to burn a DVD+R so it that appears as a pressed DVD-ROM in any DVD-ROM drive it's inserted in. If you booktype DVD+R's, this allows for greater compatibility with most stand alone DVD players, including your PS2. Your burner has to support booktyping (most newer ones do).

I'm going to order a pack of Taiyo Yuden DVD-R 's from Supermediastore.com, to play my backups on my V12 PS2. Is this the best choice? My Memorex DVD-R 's had failed me.
Anyone think differently?

Oops. In my previous post I meant my DVD+R memorex's had failed me, not DVD-R.
Anyway, yeah i'm fixing to get those, except only the 50-pack since I don't have THAT many games to backup.
I will be a sad panda if this turns out to still not working. I've done everything right so far.
