"Memosux" is the nickname given Memorex after the brand switched from manufacturers such as Ricoh and Ritek and went to selling mostly CMC Magnetics manufactured DVDs. Some interesting factors come into play. CMC was selling newer and faster media formats. So there was a lot of DVD burners needing firmware upgrades and some standalone players wouldn't play the recorded DVDs. Plus, people with complaints are usually more vocal than happy customers. Was it a matter of quality or compatibility? People say buy Verbatim for quality. But Verbatim sold some CMC Magnetics media under their brand. It pays to ID your media so you know what you're working with.

For some reason people won't upgrade the firmware no matter how many times it's suggested. I see it as routine maintenance, if you're going to use newer media formats as it comes along. I have an earlier model standalone that won't play the recorded media very well, even when booktyped to DVD-ROM. I've got a newer multi-format standalone that will play just about anything. Just pointing out with some older hardware, and that's only a couple of years, there can be compatibility issues.

The Memorex itself is no longer just CMC. I'm not sure how CMC currently fits into the sales scheme at Memorex. ZoSoIV just mentioned Ritek as a manufacturer. I was looking for some CMC media to do some test burns to see how it's working out. I hate to keep listening to forum rumors without checking out things for myself. I went by Wal Mart and picked up a 30 spindle cheap. I got it home and opened one in DVD Identifier and found they're Ricoh. I've used hundreds of Ricoh DVDs, including Memorex brand, in the past and they're very good media. As I mentioned before, and as others have mentioned, media needs to be checked for manufacturer ID. I can assure you from personal experience that not all Memorex sucks.

I ran dvd identifier and it says:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD+R:RICOHJPN-R03-004]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disc & Book Type : [DVD+R] - [DVD+R]
Manufacturer Name : [Ricoh Co. Ltd.]
Manufacturer ID : [RICOHJPN]
Media Type ID : [R03]
Product Revision : [004]
Blank Disc Capacity : [2,295,104 Sectors = 4.70 GB (4.38 GiB)]
Recording Speeds : [1x-2.4x , 4x , 6x-8x , 6x-16x]

(these were sold as Memorex). So the ricoh name is good, right? I guess the next thing is to update the firmware... is there an easy app to identify the drive / get the firmware?

THe drive is OEM in a dell PC. the dvd identifier says it's a ts-h533a (TSSTCorp) with firmware DE04. Looking on the Dell website, it says we have the latest firmware DE04:

http://support.dell.com/support/download...2&fileid=182129

I did run the flash updater and it ran, rather than saying it was the same virmware version (this version has a 1/07 release date... and the machine was shipped in 12/06, so MAYBE there was improvements without version number changes!?. We'll see what happens.

Any thoughts?

Make sure your connected to the Internet. Open IMGBURN OR DVD DECRYPTER> TOOLS> DRIVE> CHECK FOR FIRMWARE UPDATES...

if its the latest firmware flashing the drive won't help

the RICOHJPN media is top notch so that shouldn't be a problem

- couldn't agree more strongly, i use RICOHJPNR03 very heavily, even more so than my beloved 'Verbatim Taiyo Yuden'. Absolutely faultless discs, and very cheap here in UK, £12 for 100, just bought another 1000 to add to the 300 or so i already have in stock, am loving the Ricoh's :)

As to DVDFab, here's something to consider - http://club.cdfreaks.com/f116/dvdfab-pla...55/#post1937869

seems there's definitely a problem with DVDFab with regards to Pirates of the Caribbean - Worlds End, the solution may well help with Hairspray too. I see res2cue noted DVDFab 3.1.7.6 worked back on the bottom of page 2 of this thread, which concurs with the cdfreaks post i linked to

need help making a copy of hairspray. this movie pretty much shut down all of my burning programs(decrypter, shrink, rip it,roxio, dameon, and nero).i tried many different disks that could take up to 16x but all were dvd-r. i was finally able to make a copy, but it ended up being put on a sony dvd+r 8x.this would play in one dvd player and tore up another, and wouldn't work in any other ones.plus i cant make a copy out of the copied one. then my computer started acting funny and i had to uninstall everything and reinstall them..then the programs started working again. i was even able to copy other movies, but when i tried Hairspray again it would not burn ....can someone please help...is it unburnable or what.

round or flat?

I didn't de-select anything on this one - just 1 audio. Compression was at 91%. All was good on my end.

Hot off the press, new 4.0.1.4 Beta of DVDFab

What's New:

4.0.1.4 Beta (Nov 24, 2007)
- New: Improved DVD structure cleaning module.
- New: Updated language files.
- Fix: DVD Shrink "Out of memory" error when copying DVD in certain cases.
- Fix: A crash problem when clicking "Settings" button in certain cases.
- Fix: Several minor problems.

edit-
Partial success!! - though not with Hairspray but with Pirates of the Caribbean World's End; i didn't use DVDFab 4.0.1.4 Beta, just FixVTS followed by vobblanker on the files that DVDFab 4.0.1.2 had originally ripped in main movie mode; reason for posting this here is that the fix might well help with Ratatouille (though of course people should just plump for the new DVDFab Beta instead, i was just determined to get this movie sorted..). However DVD Rebuilder still fails in Phase 3, should've just tried the new Beta instead :(

Question.. I used the new DVDFAB version, and then dowloaded Recode2 also. When I ran Recode 2 , it would only copy a 'stereo' soundtrack and not the DD5.1 soundtrack - WHen I did the DVDFAB, i specifically checked the 5.1 soundtrack and not the stereo one.

Has anyone else experiened this with Hairspray? Any work around?

AnyDVD, ver. 6.2.0.2 and CloneDVD will do this one easily. Or you can use the AnyDVD ripper and then DVDShrink. The DVDFab decrypter beta should also work.

I finally had success on this back up copy of Hairspray by copying only the Main Title and selecting only the DD5.1 audio track so that Shrink was not necessary.

1. Ran the newer version of DVDFAB, (not the new beta version, the one before that).
2. Ran the file through VOB Blanker
3 Ran that file through Decrypter (to write the dvd files) and then to transfer to DVD.

The DVD played perfect on the computer (including DD5.1 sound) and also on home theater complete with proper soundtrack.. NO skipping, no fadeouts, no dropouts.. perfect. Was a lot of work but it ended up with a finished totally usable back up copy of my disc.

Hairspray doesn't appear to be much of a problem now. I think this thread is becoming a testimonial on how everyone did it. ;)

yeah the big hitters (anydvd and dvdfab decrypter) had it beat quickly.

Pacman have you used Intervideo DVDCopy 5 lately?

Running AnyDVD in the background and opening the DVD in Shrink does the following: If you select "Full Disc" it will cause the video to freeze in certain areas with audio dropping out. If you Re-author and select the movie only, you get the movie, but with closed caption (subtitles) turned on. Is there a way to do the movie only and turn off the closed caption? All other methods crash.

You could uncheck all the subtitle options. Did you try turning the subtitles off with your remote? It's been pointed out that Shrink and AnyDVD isn't the best combo for Hairspray. If you can get it without buying additional software, I see your point. You could try a trial of one of the other suggested programs.

Copy 6 is on the InterVideo website. There's more included for use with the newer mobile formats. If you liked Copy 5, you'll like 6. It uses icons more in the interface. If you used 5, 6 is only a slight change. Browse around in the settings and options for a better feel of what it can do. Be sure to look in all the drop down selections. I was surprised at the number of options. I think there was about 6 or 7 for DivX alone with both PAL and NTSC conversion. Of course it still does all the DVD options.

Let's keep to the topic of Hairspray - not DVDCopy 6 Plus. That would be better discussed in the software forum.
